Carmencita; an abstract to the reverse signed and dated 'LILIAN HOLT 54' (lower right) oil on board 74 x 62.5cmFootnote: Provenance Sale; Roseberys, London, 13 June 2006, lot 1 With Abbott and Holder, London, where acquired in 2006 It has been suggested that the present work could be a self portrait of the artist. British artist Lilian Thirza Charlotte Holt, also known by her married name, Bomberg, received her early training at Putney Art School, before serving in the Women’s Land Army during the First World War. Following the War, she took further art classes at Regent Street Polytechnic. In 1923, Holt married her first husband, the art dealer Jacob Mendelson, and in 1924 gave birth to her daughter, Dinora. During this time, Holt was completely dedicated to her young family and struggled to find opportunities to paint, but through her husband’s work she was constantly exposed to art, developing admiration for works by Sickert, Bomberg and Epstein. In 1929, having divorced Mendelson the previous year, Holt married the artist David Bomberg and in 1935 gave birth to her second daughter, Diana. After her marriage to Bomberg, Holt largely abandoned painting, focussing her efforts entirely on nurturing her husband’s career. It was only in 1945, upon the insistence of Bomberg, that Lilian resumed painting. This, however, was short lived, as in 1957, Lilian once again interrupted her career to care for Bomberg, whose health at this time was in decline. After Bomberg’s death, Holt once again recommenced her painting career, travelling to Mexico, Basutoland, Andalusia, Yugoslavia, Morocco, Turkey, and Iceland to paint, whilst continuing to promote Bomberg’s artistic legacy.Condition report: Oil on board with an earlier composition on the reverse. The board is slightly bowed forward. The paint layers are in a good condition overall, there is some wear and abrasion at the edges. The upper edge of the frame is loose and care should be taken when handling.

Inspired by his lodgings in the early 1930s, which overlooked the course of The Boat Race, the exterior surfaces of the bowl are adorned with black transfer prints, and overpainted with coloured enamels, depicting race day scenes, while the interior bears an illustration of a busy Piccadilly Circus on race day. The bowl was reissued in 1975 in a limited run of 200, and then in 1986, to honour fifty years since his original Wedgwood commission, Ravilious’ Boat Race bowl was again reissued - this time in a limited edition of 250.Condition report: Some all over crazing and light staining but otherwise in good condition.

GLUCK (Hannah Gluckstein) (1895-1978)'Study for Flora'Oil on canvas25.5 x 20.5cmSigned and dated 1921Illustrated p.55: Gluck 1895-1978: Her biography, Diana SouhamiProvenance: Purchased by the vendor in February 1977 from the Shepherds Hill, Buxted, house contents sale of Sir Edward Maufe, no 707 in the Clifford Dann catalogue. Note: This is a study for 'Flora's Cloak' first exhibited at Gluck's solo exhibition in 1924 at the Dorien Leigh Galleries in South Kensington and now in the Tate collection. The architect Sir Edward Maufe and his wife Prudence, the Heals designer, were close personal friends of the artist and Prudence wrote to Gluck after viewing the exhibition:“I think your portraits are the best. I think the landscapes a little exaggerated and the group of the jockey quite wonderful. I was a little disappointed in ‘Flora’ - her hair seemed to me to dominate too much. The rest was exquisite and we were horribly tempted to buy.”We have mooted the possibility that Prudence Maufe was the model for this study, for as well as owning the painting we feel there is a strong resemblance, although Maufe's granddaughter the writer Juliet Dunmur, does not believe this to be the case.The last image is Gluck with this painting, photographed in her studio in 1973 by Jorge Lewinski prior to her final Fine Arts Society exhibition.(With thanks to the FAS)
