Matrix XEX 421-1N & XEX 422-1N. With clean original Emitex inner. The sleeve is in wonderful archive condition showing some slight laminate wear. A final upgrade.

Matrix/mother stampers: YEX 94-1 1 H & YEX 95-1 1 A. Housed with clean original Emitex inner. The large stereo sleeve is in lovely Ex+ condition with some light discolouration around the flipback tabs and a little foxing to the reverse - elsewhere in exceptionally clean order.

Side 2 is in very sharp Ex condition with super clean playing surfaces, there are only a couple of very light and fine surface hairline marks, these never at all heavier in nature. Matrix/mother stampers: XEX 421-1N 1 G & XEX 422-1N 1 R (first day Stampers). With only very minor wear to the lovely sharp, clean and bright labels showing the ZT tax code on side 2. The first printing 'right aligned' Angus McBean credit sleeve is in very sharp Ex condition - the front in exceptional order, the reverse showing a couple of very light and minor creases and a little wear to the flipback tabs. Absolutely no need to upgrade on this copy.

The record is (PMC 7009) is in glossy VG condition with a number of light surface marks on each side, nothing feelable. The sleeve is in very sharp Ex+ condition, a beautiful example).

This copy is the very first pressing on Parlophone with the distinctive 'black and gold' labels (PCS 3042, with Dick James credits for tracks A1, A2, A6, A7, B4 and B6). The record is in Ex condition. Retaining the original lustre, there are a couple of light and minor surface marks to the playing surfaces - these are never at all heavier with absolutely no feelable scratches to mention. With sharp and clean labels, with ZMT tax code on side 1. Matrix/mother/stampers: YEX 94-1 1 R & YEX 95-1 1 G. Housed with clean original Emitex inner. The first pressing ('right' aligned Angus McBean credit) sleeve is in Ex condition. The front in exceptionally clean order, there is a very small section of the upper top right section of the reverse flipback tab missing, the reverse elsewhere in clean order showing a little foxing. The spine is in sharp, clean and fully legible order. A great example.

The record is in VG condition showing some light surface marks to the glossy playing surfaces with one or two 'just about' feelable light scratches. Matrix/mother stampers (machine stamped): YEX 94-1 1 P & YEX 95-1 1 G. The sleeve is in well presented VG condition with the front sharp and clean, the reverse with some wear along the flipback tabs and some writing in pen noted. With some shelfwear (spine not fully legible).

Rose Talbot (1915-2009); By whom sold, Christie's, London, 26 March 1976, lot 35 Literature: Oliver Millar, The Pictures at Malahide Castle, privately printed 1953, no. 144. The picture is listed in Robert Fountain's catalogue of Ferneley's paintings (British Sporting Art Trust, D.10.000.004: 10.000.006) https://www.bsat.co.uk/sites/114/upload/userfiles/ferneley-catalogue.pdf This highly significant example of Ferneley’s second Irish period was painted on his fruitful visit here in 1810. It was commissioned by Andrew Nugent of (1770-1846), of Portaferry House, County Down. Colonel Nugent had succeeded his father in 1797 and served as Lieutenant-Colonel, of the North Down Militia, and High Sheriff of County Down. In 1800, he married Selina, youngest daughter of Thomas, 1st Viscount de Vesci of Abbey Leix house, County Laois and the famously beautiful Elizabeth-Selina (née Brooke). Here Ferneley was called upon to depict Selina’s favourite hunter, with a pointer and setter, all located in the lush verdure of an Irish landscape. The picture descended through the Nugent family, via the remarkable Margaret Talbot (daughter of Barbara Nugent, who was created baroness Talbot of Malahide in her own right in 1831), until the famous dispersals from the castle in 1976. The absence of a native school of equestrian painting has long surprised art historians, especially given Ireland’s close association with the turf. However, this lacuna is compensated for by the fact that one of the finest of all English sporting painters, John Ferneley, enjoyed close links with Ireland. This was noted by Anne Crookshank and the Knight of Glin: ‘It should be remembered that the great English horse painter John Ferneley of Melton Mobray paid four visits to Ireland, the first in 1808 when he had introductions from the fifth Duke of Rutland, whose father had been Lord Lieutenant. Ferneley returned for long visits in 1810, 1811 and 1812’. John Ferneley was born at Thrussington in Leicestershire, in the midst of the English ‘Hunting Shires’. His precocity attracted the attention of the Duke, who persuaded his wheelwright father to apprentice him to the equestrian painter Ben Marshall. The latter became a life-long friend as well as teacher. Ferneley first arrived in Ireland in late 1808 and stayed about a year, returning to Thrussington in November 1809. He clearly found the country congenial and won significant commissions, painting for such distinguished patrons as the Lords Lismore and Rossmore and the Trenches and O’Callaghans. He contrived to earn and save £180, enough to pay for his marriage to Sally Kettle shortly after his return to England. They stayed in England only a few weeks, returning to Ireland in the spring of 1810, where they were received with generosity and affection by his clients of the previous year. In five months he amassed a small fortune of over £200. Ferneley is without question the finest sporting artist to have worked in Ireland, and yet few indeed of his paintings of this prolific period survive or at least can be identified today. There are still two such in the collection of the Earls of Belmore at Castle Coole, which show ponies (‘Plenipo’ and ‘Buffer’) while this significant example long hung at Malahide Castle. Fereneley’s portrayal of Hugh Dick’s mare and pointer outside his home of Humewood, County Wicklow, was sold in these rooms on 19th October 2021 (€95,000 hammer). On his return to England, Ferneley rapidly established a distinguished clientele, and he and John Herring were the sporting painters par excellence in the period 1810-1850. Ferneley was himself a keen sportsman, and he recounts his exploits in the field in his (eccentrically spelled) letters.
WILLEM VAN DER HAGEN (FL. 1720-1745) A pair of Capriccio Italianate Landscapes with Figures and Animals A pair, oil on panel, each 17.5 x 25cm These small landscapes form an exciting addtion to the small oeuvre of William Van de Hagen, often seen as the founder of the great school of landscape painting which flourished in Ireland in the eighteenth century. Although they differ completley in scale, these landscapes are directly comparable to the series of capriccio landsapes which comprise his most original and appealing work, sharing with them the similarly etiolated figures set in a landscape which mixes bucolic tranquility with architetural fantasy. Highlighting the overlap with the larger works is the fact that the detail of the dog barking at the swan is repeated almost verbatim from the finest of the capriccios, formerly at Kilsharvan House, County Meath (private collection; see the title page to Desmond FitzGerald, Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture). Van der Hagen may have travelled extensively before settling in Ireland. Views are known of Gibraltar, Sicily and even North Africa although it is not certain that all of them are based on first-hand experience. He moved to Ireland in, or about, 1722. His presence is first noted by Harding’s Impartial Newsletter in 1722 where he is recorded as “lately arrived from London” and as painting sets for the Theatre Royal. Some ten years later he is known to have painted the scenery for a staging of Cephalus and Procris, which was described at the time as “finer painted than ever seen in this kingdom”. In addition to his work in the theatre, van der Hagen was busy with other commissions from his earliest days in Ireland which renders suspect Anthomy Pasquin’s account of his character. He describes the artist as a “painter of landscape and shipping in Dublin and other towns in Ireland…This was a most remarkable genius; and had his industry been proportioned to his powers, he might have done wonders; but he would never work while he had a shilling; and when pinched by his distress, he would retire to a public house, and paint a picture to liquidate his reckoning”. This hardly accords with the number, accomplishment and variety of the commissions that van der Hagen completed in the twenty-three years that he was in Ireland. Two years after his arrival he painted an altarpiece for St Michan’s Church, Dublin which has not survived nor has the “painted glory” for St Patrick’s in Waterford. In 1728 he was commissioned by the tapestry maker Robert Baillie to “take prospects” of the places to be depicted in the six tapestries for the newly built House of Lords. In the end only two of his paintings were worked up into tapestries and these depart from his designs considerably. Presumably connected with this commission is his View of Derry and The Landing of King William at Carrickfergus (Ulster Museum). Given his scene painting background and facility for composition, it is not surprising that Van der Hagne also found work as a decorative painter. One eighteenth-century source notes “he painted many houses in this kingdom”; for example at Curraghmore, County Waterford he completed a trompe d’oeil scheme with the staircase decorated with “beautiful paintings by Van der Egan (sic) such as columns, festoons etc between which are several landscapes” while the ceiling was “painted in perspective and represents a dome, the columns seeming to rise, through a flat surface”. Given the temporary nature of these decorative schemes which were so often redone as taste changed it is remarkable that one of van der Hagen’s grisaille rooms has survived almost intact, although now dismantled. This was completed for the Christmas family of Whitfield Court, County Waterford and comprises eighteen panels of gods and goddesses (Private collection; Ballyfin demesne). Van der Hagen clearly had close ties of patronage with the Waterford area. In addition to these house decorations and the work at St Patrick’s he was commissioned to paint a large view of the city of Waterford for which, in 1736, he was paid £20 by the Corporation.
