Irish history interest: An original autograph letter, written in English and Gaelic, by Domhnall Ua Buachalla (1866-1963), the Irish politician and member of the First Dail who served as third and final Governor-General of the Irish Free State. The letter, dated 14 July 1938, includes a small original photograph of the historic signing that put an end to the office of Governor-General (at the time of the Edward VIII abdication crisis): 'My dear friend, a thousand thanks for the wee Welsh national flag which I received the day before yesterday. I appreciated it very much and shall have it hanging in my room bye-and-bye. We enjoyed very much our few days in North Wales. It is a beautiful country and its people are homely and warm-hearted. I send you herewith a photo I took whilst on our visit. The small one is rather historical. I am signing the document which ended my term of office, at the same putting an end to English domination through her representative the Govr General. That act was another step forward on the road to freedom. Full freedom for the twenty-six Counties was attained on the 19th instant when Cove Harbour was evacuated by the British troops and their place taken by our Irish units, and the national flag hoisted where the Union Jack had been. Health and a blessing. I am, with much esteem [signed]. The gentleman witnessing the signature was my secretary, Sean Fitzgerald, a fluent Irish speaker. [signed]' A letter in English and Gaellic, together with a photo signed by the Governor General of Ireland
