John James Audubon (1785-1851); The Birds of America: A selection of plates/landscape plates facsimile, Leipzig: Edition Leipzig [printer]/London: The Ariel Press, 1972 & 1973. 2 elephant folio volumes with 40 collotype plates in facsimile after Audubon, No. 686 of an edition of 1,000 copies, one of 250 copies numbered 501-750 (the `Great Britain and Commonwealth Edition`) each signed by the director of the Ariel press, in publisher`s half-cloth pictorial boards, both of the volumes in the original shipper`s boxes bearing Ariel Press address labels and printed labels giving the copy number. "John James Audubon`s The Birds of America is the most monumental illustrated ornithological work ever to have been undertaken and and the first cultural and scientific achievement by an American to be universally acclaimed" (Mauersberger) (Illustrated).
A rare early 19th century "Ormskirk" or "Chaff Cutter" escapement pocket watch in paired silver case, hallmarked for Chester 1819. The movement signed Ja Houghton, Ormskirk, no.335, with exposed main spring and movement, the numerals on the white enamel dial having been substituted for the original owners name John Baxendale, diameter 47mm. This type of escapement was invented in 1704 by Peter Debaufre and was the first frictional rest escapement produced. The escapement predominantly came into use between 1800 and 1830 in the Lancashire town of Ormskirk (Illustrated).
A fine Elizabeth II hallmarked silver and gilt figured centrepiece in the form of a tree with three children playing below, the tree supporting a circular crystal bowl. This centrepiece was first cast c.1840 by Edward Barnard & Sons and has been revived by the same makers, is hand chased, hallmarked for London 1975 and weighs approx 60oz (excluding the crystal bowl), diameter of bowl 24cm, overall height 28cm (Illustrated).

Vereker Monteith Hamilton (Scottish, 1856-1931), Kensington Gardens in June, signed lower left with initials "VMH" and inscribed verso `To Joey Farina from the artist Christmas 1911`, oil on canvas, 25 x 34cm (9.75 x 13.26in) Provenance: Mademoiselle Joey Farina, the aunt of the vendor, and by descent. The Hamilton and Farina families remained lifelong friends, and letters of correspondence between Joey Farina and Vereker Hamilton, and Vereker`s son Julian and Joey, accompany this lot together with a first edition copy of `Things That Happened`, an autobiography of the artist inscribed `For Joey from the author`s daughter`. Vereker Hamilton was a Scottish artist who in later life became interested in painting leading stage and ballet figures, in particular the Russian Ballet, and he became a close friend of the Soprano Mademoiselle Joey Farina and gave her the present painting at Christmas 1911. Vereker Hamilton studied at the Slade School under Legros, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1886 onwards and at the Paris Salon, Glasgow and the Grosvenor Gallery

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), A bronze bust `Suzon`, signed and inscribed `Cie des Bronzes a Bruxelles` on a fitted bronze socle and veined red marble base with title plate, 18ins In 1870, as the Franco-Prussian War raged in France, Auguste Rodin went to Belgium to work in the atelier of decorative sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. He stayed for six years producing his first commercially successful piece in the style of his employer, the bust of a young girl called "Suzon". After a trip to Italy in 1876 exposed him to the work of Michelangelo, he abandoned this style, but at the time Suzon proved very popular and sold in multiple copies. Conceived in 1872, the bust Suzon was subsequently cast by La Companie des Bronzes de Bruxelles between 1872 and 1939. Examples exist in bronze, marble and porcelain.
