TWO GEORGE III FOB SEALS The first with a cushion shaped citrine carved with an armorial and the motto 'In Deo Fido' possibly for the Entwisle family, with a scrolled gold setting; the second fob with a citrine carved with a leaf and 'Je Ne Change Qu'en Mourant', to a reeded shaped gilt metal handle Size/dimensions: first panel 2.3cm long; second 1.5cm long Gross weight: 28.2 grams This would appear to be the full armorial display of a member of the ENTWISLE family , who were resident and later owners of the property of Foxholes, Rochdale, Lancashire. There are inaccuracies in the matching of the armorial to that recorded in indexes and to some extent I will try to explain reasons for these as we progress. Looking still further at the corresponding ENTWISLE ancient motto we have: PAR CE SIGN A AGINCORTE. Again this refers to the families connection with the French wars and we have moved on to the more passive: IN DE FIDO (Faith in God), which is probably a justified change. In the 18th/19th century the ENTWISLE family of Foxholes is represented by the descendants of John ENTWISLE (born 1633) and Dorothy HOLT, daughter of Robert HOLT of Castleton and Stubley. Their eldest son Richard ENTWISLE inherited Foxholes but his grandson Robert ENTWISLE died in 1787 unmarried. The Foxholes estate then passed to the descendants of the younger son Bertin ENTWISLE Vice Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, his grandson John MARKLAND (1744-1817) of Manchester, on inheritance adopted the family name ENTWISLE and the family arms. It his son John ENTWISLE (1784-1837) who became Sherrif of Lancashire and in 1835 became Conservative MP for Rochdale. In 1812 he married Ellen LYLE (1756-1833) who is expected to be the owner of this fob. The adaptations of the crest and motto is expected to be the result of this name change. Condition Report: Blazon of the armorial argent, on a bend engrailed sable, three mullets of the field (Entwisle) - impaling - argent, a bear sejant sable, muzzled gules (?) Crest 1: a Saracen's head couped at the shoulders Crest 2: a dexter arm embowed in armour holding in the hand all proper, a fleur de lis fessways Motto: IN DEO FIDO Notably the unusual impaled arms could belong to the GALL family. Unfortunately little is known about the family and I have been unable to locate a marriage that would link the ENTWISLE and GALL family. The recorded crest(s) for the ancient arms of the ENTWISLE family are: (i) a hand fessways couped at the wrist proper holding a fleur de lis erect or, (ii) a dexter arm embowed in armour holding with the hand a Saracen's head erased and affronte all proper. The antiquity of the arms here is significant and they owe their origin to the ENTWISLE family's involvement in the crusades and wars with the French. It might be expected that the modern version of these arms is as we have in your image, with the process of differencing being responsible for the changes. A lack of hostility and conflict being no longer present. I will not here look at reasons why the fleur de lis has changed its orientation. Condition Report Disclaimer
