A vintage accumulation in over a dozen volumes, the core being five old-fashioned stockbooks of KGVI mint never hinged sets and varieties assembled as new issues between the late 1930s and early '50s, vivid colours, the great majority in top quality despite occasional gum toning on the usual culprits (Bermuda 12/6d, Ascension earlier printings). Highlights (MNH unless otherwise stated) include GB 10/- dark blue and 1937-38 postage dues set, Australia 'robes' set with high values on both paper types, Ascension to 10/- both types, Bahrain, Bermuda with twelve different key-plate high values (one £1 type and a 10/- plate number are hinged), Brunei 1947-51 set to $10, Burma interim govt. official set (SG.O41/O53, cat. £225), Cyprus first set, Falklands first set with shades to 1/-, Leeward Islands set to £1, good range of Malaysian States, etc. The rest of the books are interesting with individual used issues in small stacks in glassines, especially India with rupee values, Malay leaping tigers, Hong Kong, Gibraltar, etc, additional mint incl. Cyprus full sheets of 1951 ½pi violet and 1½pi green (SG.152a, 155ab, cat. £735 as singles), GB £1 Silver Wedding full sheet (MNH, central column creased), Jamaica and Southern Rhodesia booklets (SB10a, SB4 respectively, cat. £435), and earlier mounted on pages incl. KGV 'Burma Service' to 5rs (O1/O13, cat. £425), a range of Newfoundland classics to investigate, a little postal history, etc. Also an as-new green 'Imperial' album for KGVI that the collector fortunately never got round to mounting the stamps in. Offered intact as received aside from the India book (Lot 115).
Collection of several thousand mint and used stamps, mostly of the period from classics to the first issues of QEII, in six loaded stockbooks and a New Ideal album for pre-1920 issues. The latter includes interesting early issues of Antigua, Bahamas (several Chalons and 1/- green), Barbados Britannias from SG.2 onwards imperf and perf, Cape triangles incl. 4d blue mint two margins, Ceylon, Gambia embossed to check, Great Britain line-engraved and 1/- embossed with no obvious faults, 3d surcharge cds and 1884 5d green mint, Grenada Chalons, Ionian Islands used 1d and 2d, Indian Native States to explore, Nova Scotia 3d SG.2 3 margins used, Fiji to 5/-, good Australasia, etc. The stockbooks are also interesting, with lots of classics through to very useful KGVI and QEII, for example the odd MNH 1948 silver wedding high value. Condition on the many earlies of course mixed. Will reward a close viewing.
The 'foreign' section of the core collection from an original estate, offered intact as received except the China volume (Lot 104). Organised by country in nine loose-leaf albums with several thousand stamps from first issues to 1930s. The classics are in very mixed condition (particular culprits Portugal and Scandinavia) however some very interesting early pages here and the later 19th century and 20th century issues have some good-quality mint. Noted particularly Japan with unused dragons with faults, over 80 'syllabics' some mint, presumed mix of genuine and reference, incl. geese, wagtails and goshawks, requiring research, through to dozens of POs in China ovpts, revenues etc. The Switzerland also extensive with 'Rayons', imperf Helvetias and further 19th century to explore. Elsewhere noted 'Fiume' handstamps, interesting Latin America, three pages of Shanghai locals, etc. Please inspect.
Collateral collection in two parts: the first an interesting group of seven documents from a family of ship's masters, from 19th century (c.1860s) to 1940s, incl. certificates and qualifications on parchment with waterproof registration document franked by twenty-one 6d. revenue stamps of two kinds, also a 1901 letter from the General Post Office Secretary's office attached with two QV 'Poundage three half-pence' postal orders for 20/- each, implying that the Captain attempting to claim the sum had been defrauded by a money-changer at Genoa. The second part a range from an ex-postmaster of The Bents office, South Shields (closed in 2003), incl. a wax seal handstamp in brass for 'The Bents - South Shields' with crown in centre and 1926 Post Office issue 'Express Delivery Services' instructions leaflet with extensive amendments annotated in red ink, as well as 10 binders of FDCs, m/s etc. Also a hallmarked silver-gilt Consignia presentation pin for 30 years' service and perspex paper weight encasing the 1989 Lord Mayor's Show strip, originally presented to the vendor's father a head councillor. The second album contains approx. 54 cards of Exhibitions with a further 9 bookmark cards and the second box has a selection of Military cards including Lord Kitchener, as well as Social & Rural cards with good family groups, Hop Pickers etc. Better Railway cards including a number of Great Eastern Railway cards and Tourist cachets. Also a range of Irish cards and other mixed foreign topography.
An old-fashioned 'Philatelic Album' from an original estate (see also Lots 49, 54, 104, 151-156, 190 and 206). This containing sheet reconstructions of line-engraved issues in various stages of completion, over a thousand stamps in total, the penny black with 122 examples, quality generally very much above the average (clearly being the source for the excellent first page of this collector's main Great Britain album). The pages for the 1d blacks marked with spaces for twelve plates at each of the 240 positions. Includes varieties such as plate 2 double letter DG four margins and neat red MX (not photographed). Then over 220 imperf 1d reds by sheet position with black plate printings likely, followed by perf 16 small crown Die I reds with the majority of positions, perf 14 large crown 'stars' complete reconstruction, through to the corner letters reds. A fascinating collection for the line-engraved specialist to explore and a wonderful basis for continuation of this quest.
