Bernard LEACH 1887-1979Three handwritten letters to Commander Reynolds Sharp RNRThe first letter dated 3.5.37, apologising for his silence and explaining that his marriage (to first wife Muriel) has ended and he has moved to Dartington Hall with Laurie Cookes (who becomes his second wife).The second letter, on Leach Pottery headed paper, dated '28-VII-49' suggesting a possible joint visit to Reynolds and Michael Cardew at Wenford Bridge Pottery.The third, on Leach Pottery Headed notepaper dated '3.X.49' again apologising for silence, refusing an invatation and explaining that he and his second wife had come to a 'sad parting of the ways' 'not a third party this time, just incompatibility of temperaments.' 'Im going to the USA for exhibitions & lectures early next year but I hope to get to Bodmin to get to see you and Michael Cardew before that'Written to a relative of Leach's, this intriguing collection of letters combine insights of a very personal nature into Leach's marriages, with his working arrangements during these unsettling periods in his family life.Provenance: From the Sharp family.

WWI Interest Military Cross (MC) Awarded to 2nd Lieut JH Goode Som L.I - later to be Captain for exemplary gallantry in the field, 'Forces War Record' as follows Gazette date 08-01-1918. Gazette page 609, John Henry Goode. Gazette issue 30466. M.C. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an attack on a village he found himself in charge of his company when his commander was wounded, and when the company in front of him lost direction and moved off to a flank, he promptly led his company up to the village, captured the first objective, and then went on to capture the second. By his quick grasp of the situation he was able to fill a dangerous gap in our leading wave, and during the clearing of the village he also showed the greatest gallantry and fearlessness, killing several of the enemy with his own hands. Awarded the Military Cross. Also awarded 114-1915 Star when Sgt Major 'acting'. The Croix De Guerre 1914-1918 medal and The Great War For Civilisation 1914-1919 medal. After WWi he continued to serve with distinction and courage.

He wrote Posters a Concise History (Thames & Hudson 1972) translated into many languages and organised and curated exhibitions in the UK and Russia on the art of the poster.From a young boy in Cornwall, during the war and later, he made pen and ink drawings, and was a painter of oils and works on paper using tempera, conté and acrylic. He showed continuously with one-man shows at Galerie Colette Allendy Paris (1959) Molton Gallery (Annely Juda) (1962) one-man exhibitions at the Taranman Gallery (1977-83) including the London Group (1955-1996); and his work is represented in both government and private collections.After retirement in 1989, he made several series: drawings and oils of the bridges of London, oils of women’s heads, acrylic and conté works on paper and finally pen and wash drawings of two women, one of whom is being dressed.John's work has recently been exhibited with The Belgrave Gallery, St Ives 2017-2022.
