A Callow shagreen mounted gilt metal double inkwell, dedicated from Nancy, Lady Astor the eight-sided body raised on bun feet, with two hinged cover, each well with gilt metal inkwell tops, stamped Callow 22.5cm. wide Provenance given by Nancy, Lady Astor to Jakie on his 25th Birthday. Nancy, Lady Astor (1879-1964) was the first woman to sit as a Conservative Member of Parliament in the House of Commons - taking her seat in December 1919.
`Phoenix` a verdi gris patinated bronze figure, by Mosheh Oved, modelled looking at its reflection, 22cm, high Mosheh Oved (alias Edward Good) founded Cameo Corner which was to become the principle centre for the sale of jewellery in London in the first half of the 20th Century. Located at 1 New Oxford Street, moving to Museum Street after the war, it close to the British Museum and also the busy shopping streets of London. Oved was a trained watch maker who had emigrated from Poland, he later co-founded the Jewish Museum in London (the Ben Uri Museum).
Two Peninsular War Army lists, each cover with printed `British Army Auxiliary Legion of Spain, Army List, August 1835 and 1st February 1836, one inscribed in ink `Brig General Chichester`, printed inside but also with many ink alterations and insertions, 18 x 11cm In 1835, Chichester was appointed Brigadier-General in the British auxiliary legion in Spain, commanded by General De Lacy Evans, with which he fought at Ernani on 30 Aug., where he received two wounds,and at the relief of Bilbao in the same year. He commanded a brigade at Mendigur and at Azua in January 1836, and in the action on the heights above St. Sebastian on 5 May and the passage of the Urmia on 28 May following (medal). He commanded at Alza when that place was attacked by the Carlists in June 1836, and the legion behaved with distinguished Chichester was also engaged at Ametza in October the same year, an in the operations of 10-13 March 1837, where his horse was killed under him, and in the general action of 16 March, where he had two horses killed and was himself wounded. In the absence of General Evans through illness, he commanded the whole legion, then reduced to a division of two brigades, in the action of 14 May l837, and in the attack and capture of Irun on 16-17 May (medal), upon which occasion he received the Carlist commandant`s sword and the keys of the town, which are now in the possession of the family. Owing to the expiration of its engagements, the original legion was disbanded in 1838, and Chichester, whose services to the queen of Spain were recognised with the cross of San Fernando, and the third and first class decorations of Isabella the Catholic and Charles III, returned home.
