The album starts with two studio images of Sims seated wearing an unusual style uniform and his overseas helmet beside him. The next page has a very nice clear image taken by Burke of officers of the Engineers wearing various forms of uniform, these are identified to the side, followed by another two Burke image of officers on the next pages. The album then continues with well executed drawn illustrations of scenes and places of interest in Afghanistan, including Jshpola Buddhist Jope between Ali Musjid & Lundi Kotal, Chardeh Valley (Cabul River) from Busawal Fort Afghanistan, Street scene in Cabul, Lahore Gate of  Bala Hissar Cabul, RE quarters Sherpur, ruins of bridge over Cabul river, Lahore gate of the city of Cabul, Baber’s Mosque near Cabul, Street near Lahore Gate of city of Cabul, SW corner of Bala Hissar from opposite city gate, plus others, all done by G H Sims, signed and dated to the corners. Towards the end of the album are more photographs including panoramas taken by John Burke in Afghanistan, including Cabul valley, Lahore Gate Bala Hissar Cabul showing natives outside. The images are in generally good condition considering age. Album ends with some more hand drawn sketches. All housed in a leather bound period album. 12 photographic images and 49 sketches. Albums relating to this campaign are extremely rare. ** Colonel G H Sims was born 19th November 1852. Educated at R.M.A Woolwich and entered the army in 1872. He was promoted to Captain in 1884, Major 1892, Lt Colonel 1899 and Colonel 1903. He retired from the army in 1909, re-employed during the Great War and served from 1914-1917. He served during the Afghan wars 1879-80, Sudan expedition and the Boer War in South Africa. He was awarded the CB and later the CMG for services during WW1. As a Lieutenant in the regiment he was part of the winning team in the 1874-75 FA Cup winning team, when the Royal Engineers AFC beat Old Etonians 2-0 in a replay after drawing the first match 1-1.His personal journals kept during the Afghan campaign and Boer War is held in the Royal Engineers Museum, Chatham, Kent.** John Burke was an Irish born photographer who took some of the first photographs of Afghanistan in the late 1870’s and early 1880’s during the British Military campaign in the country. He travelled with the British Army and soon became the non official war photographer for the campaign. Many engravings of his images were used in the period publication “The Graphic”. In 2010 the British photographer Simon Norfolk travelled to Afghanistan and followed in the footsteps of Burke, taking images of the current military campaign in the same style as Burke, these images along side some of Burkes work were exhibited at the Tate Modern, London and other galleries around the world.

Lot 154

The photograph album starts with images taken on the Western Front in 1915, images are mostly taken around Ypres of the battle damage. One image to the front shows covered dead bodies with the caption “The effect of a grump”. Interesting trench shots including some taken at Hill 60. The album soon moves to images of various types of British aircraft including monoplanes, biplanes and triplanes, each being identified underneath. The album ends with identified group shots of Royal Flying Corps officers and men in barracks etc. Nearly all of the images are identified and are of good condition and quality. 98 images in total housed in a period album. Images at the front of the image must have been taken by another officer and given to Anderson, as he features later in the album. Loose inside the album is a 88 Squadron reunion dinner menu from 1919 with signatures of officers who attended.  The album is accompanied by two log books which were compiled by 2nd Lieutenant Anderson, the first book is missing its cover. The log starts with training in 1917.Various ink stampings for No62 and No9 Training Squadrons Royal Flying Corps. In April 1918 he was posted to No88 Squadron. The log book first mentions combat with enemy machines on 5th June 1918 whilst on a patrol from Oostende to Ypres. On 1st July 1918 he states “9 E.A engaged near Thouout. Fired bullet into one - spinning down. my bus hit in fuelgage”, he was not credited with a kill on this date. His first credited kill was on 17th July 1918 when on a photographic reconnaissance mission, this is stated in the log book. This book also mentions his second kill on 31st July 1918. His second log book has the original cover, which has had the spine protected. This book has his name inked to the front cover. The second log starts in September 1918 and straight away mentions combat with enemy aircraft whilst on photographic reconnaissance patrols. On 27th September he gives a good account of his fourth credited kill, “A fokker biplane dived on us from the SW at 17,000 over Lombersart. Chilton fired 120 rounds at him when he went down in sideslip and falling leaf spin. My machine had bullets through outer wing strut”. On the 18th October 1918, he gives a good account of a dog fight with 4 fokkers which lasted for 15 minutes, he was not successful in this attack. On 30th October he was involved in a engagement which resulted in him being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C), this is noted in the log book as follows “O.P scrap with numerous Fokker biplanes. Formation scattered. Picked up with Capt Hepburn & Lt Conn & recrossed the lines. Dived alone on 8 fokker biplanes. Shot one down & then attacked by remainder, who shot us all the way back. One more EA brought down, petrol tanks hit, Lt Elliot & self wounded, machine riddled, but landed ok in a ploughed field 600 yards from Hun line. Machine was soon after shelled by guns!”. This is the last entry in the log book. Both log books show wear but are well annotated and easy to read.  Gerald Frank Anderson was born in South Africa on 24th February 1894. He joined the RFC in 1917. He was awarded the DFC, London Gazette 8 Feb 1919, the citation was,“2nd Lt (A./Lt) Gerald Frank Anderson (France). On 30th October this officer was one of an offensive patrol that attacked fifty enemy machines. Six of the latter concentrated their attack on Lt Anderson, and would have inevitably destroyed his machine had it not been for the exceptionally able manner in which he maneuvered and fought. Although both he and his Observer were wounded and the machine badly damaged, he succeeded with rare courage and skill in shooting down one and keeping the remainder at a distance. Eventually he brought his machine safely to ground about half a mile within our lines.” Ex Frank Cheesman Collection.
