MARX GROUCHO: (1890-1977) American film comedian, one of the Marx Brothers, and the recipient of an Honorary Academy Award. A good T.L.S., Groucho, one page, 4to, New York, n.d. (1933/34), to ´Dear Svensk, Kids and Mother´, on the printed stationery of the Hotel Elysee. Marx writes a social letter, largely concerning his friend Harry Ruby and their first wife Chloe ´Cleo´ Carter, commencing ´You certainly are full of that Ruby - Cleo case. Possibly because you are there on the ground. I don´t care anything about it one way or another. I regret it happening, I am sorry for both of them, outside of that, the hell with it. I am glad you befriended Cleo, whether she is guilty of sexual indescretions (sic) or not, I don´t think that´s important, most everyone goes a little cockeyed on the little matter of sex, and I think it was poor judgement and bad taste for Harry to shout if (sic) from the housetops, if that is what he did´, further adding ´I don´t believe he is responsible for what he is saying, I think he is temporarily deranged. I privately think he is making all the noise because he fears that if he doesn´t Cleo will nick him financially´. Marx further writes of his current work, ´We are scheduled to audition next Thursday, but we as yet haven´t an idea that is going to make a sponsor throw his hat up in the air with glee. We are meeting again this morning to see if we can´t work out something that will be worth hearing, if we don´t the thing will fall through, and us with it´, before concluding ´I went to the fights last night and had a pretty good time. The night previous when you phoned me, I was very nervous and couldn´t sleep, finally winding up with a five grainer, the first in weeks. Last night I took a pine needle bath right after the fights and slept pretty well. I wrote you all the news yesterday and this is just velvet´. A letter of particularly candid content. Two small tears to the edges, otherwise VGHarry Ruby (1895-1974) American pianist, composer, songwriter and screenwriter. A close friend of Groucho, Ruby composed the scores and provided musical numbers for the Marx Brothers´ films Animal Crackers (1930), Horse Feathers (1932) and Duck Soup (1933), as well as also contributing to the screenplays of all three movies. Chloe Carter (1903-1993) American showgirl and Music Hall dancer, also known by her stage name Cleo Cullen. Carter had married Ruby in 1930 and the couple moved to Beverly Hills where, in 1933, Cleo was introduced to the actress Jean Acker (1892-1978) who had been divorced from Rudolph Valentino in 1923. The two women fell in love and in 1934 (presumably around the time of the present letter) Carter obtained a dvorce from Ruby. Carter and Acker would spend the rest of their lives together living in an apartment within a building they owned in Beverly Hills.The fights that Marx refers to attending are likely to have involved Primo Carnera, either in his Heavyweight victory over Jack Sharkey on 29th June 1933, or his subsequent loss to Max Baer on 14th June 1934. Both events took place at the Madison Square Garden Bowl in Queens, New York.

MATISSE HENRI: (1869-1954) French artist. A good T.L.S., H Matisse, two pages (separate leaves), 4to, Paris, 18th September 1951, to Monroe Wheeler, in French. Matisse states that he is taking advantage of his son, Pierre, taking a flight to deliver the two covers that Wheeler had asked him to create, remarking ´ Je dois avant tout vous prier de m´excuser de ne pas avoir compose la couverture du catalogue en trois couleurs seulement. La chose ne m´a pas ete possible et j´espere que son attrait pour le publie ainsi vous permettra d´en vendre suffisemment pour couvrir les frais de l´impression des six couleurs´ (Translation: ´First of all, I must apologise for not having composed the catalogue cover in three colours only. It was not possible for me to do so, and I hope that the appeal of publishing it in this way will enable you to sell enough to cover the cost of printing the six colours´) and further offering some instructions for the printing process, ´1. Pour aider l´imprimeur a trouver pour l´impression des couleurs absolument fideles, je joins a la composition des echantillons de ces couleurs de surfaces plus grandes. 2. Le noir des yeux doit etre le meme que celui de la band noire. 3. Les noms des Musees qui font l´exposition doitent etre imprimes en caracteres petits mais tres noirs sur la bande blanche inferieure. 4. Vous pourrez imprimer le titre du livre sur la partie rouge du dos. Quant a la lithographie que j´avais remis a la maison Mourlot, je ne pourrai pas signer et numeroter toutes les epreuves. Etant un peu fatigue actuellement, ce travail serait trop long pour moi. Je me suis donc souvenu que votre premiere idee etait que je signe la lithographie dans le corps de la planche et c´est moi qui vous ai dit que je ferai davantage - je signerai chaque epreuve. VGMonroe Wheeler (1899-1988) American publisher and museum curator who was employed in several posts at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, including as Director of Publications.Alfred H. Barr Jr. (1902-1981) American art historian and the first director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.Matisse´s letter refers to his collaboration in the publication of Barr´s Matisse: His Art and His Public by the Museum of Modern Art in 1951. The work was also published in a limited edition of 495 copies signed by Barr and with an original lithograph by Matisse created especially for the edition bound in opposite the limitation page.

BURNAND F. C.: (1836-1917) English comic writer and playwright, remembered as the librettist of Arthur Sullivan´s opera Cox and Box. An illustrated A.L.S., F. C. Burnand, three pages, 8vo, London, 17th June 1888, to Mills. Burnand states that he can not manage an engagement on Thursday 12th ´as I am bound to Irving for a dinner, but date was uncertain & tonight he said he had fixed the 12th (as I understood him), but unless the Lyceum is closed on that evening I think he must have made a mistake in the date & means Saturday´, and therefore asks not to be included, further writing ´I might suggest Greenwich to him & we could go down together´ and concluding by thanking his correspondent and remarking ´but I mustn´t leave you in an uncertainty´. Beneath his signature Burnand has added a charming original pen and ink drawing of a steam-powered ferry heading towards Greenwich with several passengers on board. About EXHenry Irving (1838-1905) English stage actor, closely associated with the Lyceum Theatre, and the first actor to be awarded a knighthood (1895).

WHITEREAD RACHEL: (1963- ) English artist, the first woman to win the Turner Prize (1993). Signed 8 x 10 photograph of the artist in a head and shoulders pose with perhaps her most famous artwork, House (1993; demolished in 1994), situated on Grove Road, East London, in the immediate background. Signed by Whiteread in blue ink with her name alone to the lower white border. A pencil note in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the signature was obtained in person at the Belvedere 21 Museum of Contemporary Art in Vienna. EXIt was for her artwork House, a concrete cast of the inside of an entire Victorian terraced house, that Whiteread won the Turner Prize in 1993.

MASARYK TOMAS: (1850-1937) Czechoslovak politician and statesman who served as the first President of Czechoslovakia 1918-35. A good A.L.S., T. G. Masaryk, three pages, 8vo, Prague, 26th December 1902, to Professor Wiener. Masaryk writes to offer a literary plan to his correspondent, explaining that he has completed the first volume of a work on Russia entitled Russia and Europe: Studies in Russian Philosophy of History and Religion, which is an enlarged part of his Chicago lectures, continuing ´Could you find a translator (from the German) & perhaps revise the translation? The Chicago University Press, I hope, will publish the book & pay the translation out of the Crane Fund; at least I asked them to do it & hope they will approve of my plan´ and further explaining ´I would send the Germ. sheets as soon as the printing will begin; this might be in about 2-3 months. The book gives sketches of all the leading thinkers......I try to see Russia & its Revolution from the inward souls......(The next volume will contain Dostoyevskiy & his fight against nihilism, the third a view of the Russ. literature from Pushkin down to Gorky).....I imagine you have some pupils & that one of them could do the work & that yourself are interested in Russia to that degree, that I can dare to ask your help´. [HUGO VICTOR]: (1802-1885) French novelist, poet and dramatist. PAULZE D´IVOY ROLAND (1812-1891) French civil servant who served as the Prefect of la Manche 1852-53. A fascinating pair of letters from Paulze d´Ivoy relating to Victor Hugo´s period of exile on Jersey, the first L.S., R Paulze d´Ivoy, two pages, 4to, Saint-Lo, Manche, Normandy, 2nd September 1852, to Jules-Francois Bouvattier, the sub-prefect of Avranches, in French. Paulze d´Ivoy informs his correspondent that he will continue to keep him updated with any information he receives concerning the manoeuvres and plans, manifest or supposed, of the refugees residing in the English Channel islands, continuing ´Ainsi, M. Victor Hugo, a son arrivee a Jersey, n´aurait pas tarde a fraterniser avec les membres du club demagogique de Saint-Helier, ou il aurait prononce les discours les plus violents contre le Prince-President et son gouvernement´ (Translation: ´Thus, Mr. Victor Hugo, on his arrival in Jersey, is said not to have been slow to fraternise with the members of the demagogic club of Saint-Helier, where he is said to have made the most violent speeches against the Prince-President and his government´) and further adding ´Les refugies francais et etrangers se concentreraient dans cette ile, et des rapports s´etabliraient entre eux et Kossuth, de retour en Angleterre avec des sommes considerables et avec des armes qu´il aurait achetees en Amerique et dont la destination n´est pas encore expliquee d´une maniere satisfaisante. D´un autre cote, on se serait enquis de Londres a Liverpool, si si on ne pourrait pas trouver a louer dans ce port, pour une excursion de huit jours, un bateau a vapeur de la force de 200 chevaux et de 25 hommes d´equipage. Paulze d´Ivoy writes, in full, ´Je continue a vous communiquer les renseignements qui ont pour objet de signaler les manoeuvres diverses inventees et employees par les refugies pour introduire en France les libelles et pamphlets politiques qu´ils font imprimer a Jersey. Ainsi je suis informe que, pour tromper la vigilance des autorites et dejouer la surveillance exercee sur le littoral, ils auraient cesse d´employer pour transporter ces ecrits sur la cote, des bateliers qui ne tardent pas a etre signales, et ils auraient imagine d´evider, avec une tariere a pompe, de longues pieces de bois qu´ils remplissent ensuite d´imprimes. Ces pieces de bois, bouchees avec soin, seraient jetees aussi pres que possible des cotes de Granville, Regneville, Carteret, Creances & Piron: elles seraient recueillies a maree basse par les affides. Il parait qu´on aurait aussi renonce a l´emploi des boites de fer blanc qui servaient au meme usage. L´attention de M. le Ministre de la Police generale a ete appelee sur cette manoeuvre, qu´il me signale lui-meme. Je vous prie de donner des ordres pour empecher qu´elle ne reussisse´ (Translation: ´I am continuing to send you information which is intended to point out the various manoeuvres invented and employed by the refugees to introduce into France the political libels and pamphlets which they have printed in Jersey. Thus I am informed that, in order to deceive the vigilance of the authorities and thwart the surveillance exercised on the coast, they have apparently stopped using boatmen to transport these writings to the coast, and they have imagined using a pump auger to hollow out long pieces of wood which they then fill with printed matter. These pieces of wood, carefully corked, would be thrown as close as possible to the coasts of Granville, Regneville, Carteret, Creances & Piron: they would be collected at low tide by the affidavits. It seems that the use of tin cans for the same purpose has also been abandoned. The attention of the Minister of the General Police has been drawn to this manoeuvre, which he himself has brought to my attention. I would ask you to give orders to prevent it from succeeding´). G to VG, 2When the first President of France, Napoleon III, seized complete power in 1851, establishing an anti-parliamentary constitution, thus allowing him to become Emperor of the French (1852-70), Hugo openly decalred Louis Napoleon to be a traitor to France. The novelist moved first to Brussels and then to Jersey (from where he would be expelled after a few years for supporting a Jersey newspaper that had critcised Queen Victoria). During his exile Hugo published his famous political pamphlets against Napoleon III, including Napoleon le Petit (1852). The pamphlets were banned in France but nonetheless had a strong impact within the country, despite the best efforts of the police and authorities to prevent them entering the country, as demonstrated by the second of Paulze d´Ivoy´s letters. The Hungarian nobleman and freedom fighter Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894), who served as Governor-President of Hungary in 1849, had been forced into exile during the revolutionary tide which swept across Europe in 1849 and, alongside his family and fifty loyal followers, made his way to England. Making the journey by boat, Kossuth arrived at Marseille and sought permission to travel through France to England. However Prince-President Louis Napoleon denied the request and the French authorities refused to allow the dangerous revolutionary to come ashore. As a result Kossuth publicly protested. Many of his countrymen wventually settled in Jersey and became well acquainted with Victor Hugo.

[WOODY ALLEN MOVIES]: Small selection of signed 8 x 10 photographs and very slightly smaller (2) by various actors who have appeared in different Woody Allen movies comprising Michael Caine (Elliot in Hannah and Her Sisters, 1986; a role for which the actor won the first of his two Best Supporting Actor Oscars), Michael Murphy (Yale Pollack in Manhattan, 1979), Jerry Orbach (Jack Rosenthal in Crimes and Misdemeanors, 1989), and Sam Waterston (Ben in Crimes and Misdemeanors and several other roles in Allen´s films; the image depicting the actor in costume as Nick Carraway from The Great Gatsby, 1974). KELLERMAN ANNETTE: (1886-1975) Australian swimmer, vaudeville star and film actress, one of the first women to wear a one-piece bathing costume and the first major actress to appear nude in a Hollywood production as the star of the American silent fantasy drama film A Daughter of the Gods (1916). Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Kellerman seated in a three-quarter length pose in the sea and wearing the one-piece bathing suit which she did much to popularise. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink with her name alone to a light area of the image. Some very light, extremely minor surface marks to each of the corners, evidently the result of the postcard having been previously loosely cornermounted into an album. VG

MINOT STEPHEN: (1927-2010) American novelist and short story writer. T.L.S., Steve, one page, 4to, Simsbury, Connecticut, 27th March 1974, to Stephen Brook. Minot writes concerning Brook´s rejection of Lyre, announcing ´Sad news indeed!´ and continuing ´I would have loved to have been one of those to start an expanded fiction list for Godine. But it´s not wise to dwell on such things´, further remarking ´I do appreciate your willingness to spell out the reaction of the readers in some detail. So often such letters are so evasive one can´t tell whether the decision was made on a literary level or whether the Senior Editor had a hangover that morning. And your own reaction to the novel was good to have. If bright people like yourself see some merit in it, then perhaps there is hope yet´ and concluding by sending a copy of The Tide and Isaac Bates for Brook´s pleasure, ´though after a day of mss. reading this may be no kindness. Save it for vacation´. Together with the copy of The Tide and Isaac Bates referred to, being a photocopy of thirteen 4to pages as published in the Quarterly Review of Literature, Double Fiction issue, Summer 1973, signed and inscribed by Minot in blue ink to the first page and dated 1974 in his hand. STREEP MERYL: (1949- ) American Actress, Academy Award winner. Signed 8 x 10 photograph, a close-up portrait of the actress in costume as Linda from the classic war drama film The Deer Hunter (1978). Signed by Streep in bold black ink with her name alone to a clear area at the base of the image. It was for her role in this film that Streep received her first (of a record 21) Academy Award nominations. A pencil note in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the signature was obtained in person on 27th February 1979 following a Broadway performance of Taken in Marriage at the Public Theatre. DANTON GEORGES: (1759-1794) French lawyer, a leading figure in the French Revolution who served as Minister of Justice (1792) and as the first President of the Committee of Public Safety (1793). Danton, who has been described as ´the chief force in the overthrow of the French monarchy and the establishment of the First French Republic´, was executed by guillotine at the age of 34. A rare D.S., Danton (a fine example), one page, folio, Paris, 3rd September 1792, in French. The manuscript document is headed ´Loi du trois Septembre 1792 l´an Quatrieme de la liberte´ (Translation: ´Law of the third of September 1792 in the fourth year of liberty´) and states, in part, ´L´Assemblee Nationale voulant accelerer pour tous les moyens qui sont en son pouvoir, l´arrivee des deux cents pieces de canons que le Ministre de la Guerre se propose de retirer des Cidevant Provinces de Standres et d´Artois et de la fonderie d´Indres, ainsi que de celles qu´il voudrait faire venir de toutes autres parts pour les porter dans le camp qui si forme sous les murs de Paris.......L´Assemblee Nationale apres avoir Decrete l´urgence, decrete que le Ministre de la guerre est autorise a se servir des chevaux de Poste pour la conduite de ces differentes pieces et les faire ainsi arriver a leur destination donner le delai le plus court. Au nom de la Nation, le conseil executif Provisoire mande et ordonne a tous les Corps administratifs et tribunaux que les presentes ils fassent consigner dans leurs registres, lire, publier et assister dans leurs departements et ressorts respectifs, et executer comme loi´ (Translation: ´The National Assembly wanting to accelerate by all the means which are in its power, the arrival of the two hundred pieces of cannon which the Minister for the War proposes to withdraw from the Cidevant Provinces of Standres and Artois and from the foundry of Indres, as well as those which it would like to make come from all other parts to carry them in the camp which is formed under the walls of Paris.....The National Assembly, having decreed the urgency, decrees that the Minister of War is authorized to make use of the horses of the Post Office for the driving of these various pieces and thus to make them arrive at their destination in the shortest possible time. BUÑUEL LUIS: (1900-1983) Spanish Filmmaker. A reference for many Film Directors and the leader in the avant-garde surrealism cinema. Rare signed book `Luis Buñuel´, to the half-title page, being the soft cover First Edition of Buñuel, edited by Pierre Seghers in 1962, 5 x 6 original trade cover, 224 pages, in French. The Ado kyrou work is an early critical study of the pioneering and influential Spanish Director, who made films in nearly every genre over his 50 year career. including experimental films, musicals, comedies, crime, documentary and westerns. The book contains illustrations with numerous photographs throughout. G to VGThe present signed book provenance is from the collection of noted cinephile French collector Pierre Goulliard.

ZOLA EMILE: (1840-1902) French novelist. A.L.S., Emile Zola, two pages (written to the first and third sides of the bifolium), 8vo, Medan, 1st June 1883, to ´Mon cher ami´, evidently a publisher and most probably Pierre-Victor Stock, in French. Zola states that his friend must have received from a young man, Louis Desprez, a manuscript entitled L´Evolution naturaliste in which Desprez studied several authors, including Zola himself, and continuing ´Je ne connais pas une de ces etudes, mais je vous les recommande vivement. Voyez donc ce qu´elles valent le plus tot possible, et si le vivre vous parait bien fait, vous m´obligerez en l´editant chez vous - ceci n´est point une recommandation banale´ (Translation: ´I do not know any of these studies, but I highly recommend them to you. So see what they are worth as soon as possible, and if you think the work is well done, you will oblige me by publishing it with you - this is not a trivial recommendation´), further asking if his friend has located an article in Debats and remarking ´Envoyez-le moi donc, pour que je me fouette un peu le sang car les premieres chaleurs m´endorment´ (Translation: ´Send it to me, so that I can whip my blood a bit, because the first heat makes me sleepy´). A letter of good content in which Zola champions the work of the young Louis Desprez. VGLouis Marie Desprez (1861-1885) French Naturalist writer. Desprez first met Zola in 1882 whilst researching L´Evolution naturaliste, a work which was eventually published by Pierre-Victor Stock after being turned down by other publishing houses. This was followed by the publication of Autour d´un clocher in 1884 which resulted in legal proceedings being brought against Desprez for contempt of public morals. The young writer´s trial raised numerous protests and indignation on the part of writers, in particular Zola, and took on considerable importance in the late 19th century when the question of morality and freedom were called into question on numerous occasions. Above all it was the tragic death of Desprez, at the young age of 24, following his incarceration in prison, which aroused controversy at the time and led to Zola´s famous remark ´Ceux qui ont tué cet enfant sont des gens misérables!´ (Translation: ´Those who killed this child are miserable people!´).

SMITH JAMES EDWARD: (1759-1828) English botanist, founder of the Linnean Society. A.L.S., J E Smith, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (´Tuesday´), to William Jackson Hooker (´My dear Sir´). A.L.S., Oliver Lodge, two pages (written to the first and final sides of the bifolium), 8vo, Birmingham, 1st February 1915, to Ernest Marshall, on the printed stationery of The University. Lodge states that his recent speech to the Workers´ Educational Association on the War has ´been briefly reported everywhere´ and that he doubts if there is anything worth sending from the Birmingham papers, further remarking ´I wrote an article however which appears in "The North American Review" for January, and perhaps you will find that serves your purpose´. The letter has at one stage been irregularly torn horizontally through the centre into two halves and since been rejoined somewhat crudely with sellotape, only very slightly affecting the text but not the signature. FLAUBERT GUSTAVE: (1821-1880) French Novelist. Widely considered the leading exponent of the literary realism. Best-known for his debut novel Madame Bovary (1857). A very good A.L.S., `Gus.Flaubert´, two pages, 8vo, written to the first and third page, n.p., Thursday morning, in French. Flaubert is very upset and concerned regarding his manuscript retained by the censorship, and states `Cher ami, lundi dernier, Mr. Hallays, Mr. de Beauplan et moi, nous sommes convenus des corrections censurales, au chevet même du lit de Mr. de Beauplan. Je devais r´avoir mon m[anu]s[crit] le lendemain mardi. Jusqu´à present rien encore. Je me suis adressé pour cela, hier à Mr. De Beauplan qui m´a répondu de m´adresser moi-même à Mr. Hallays… Voyez-le je vous prie, et demandez-lui pouquoi mon m[anu]s[crit] n´est pas rendu au théatre´ (Translation: “Dear friend, last Monday, Mr. Hallays, Mr. de Beauplan and I agreed on censorship corrections, at the very bedside of Mr. de Beauplan's bedside. I was supposed to get my manuscript back the next day, Tuesday. So far nothing yet. The Queen sends her war and best wishes and greetings to a Cardinal, stating in part `Emin[enetissi]mo e Rev[erendissi]mo Sig[no]re, Le nove espressioni del suo affetto, che mi ha fatto giungere nelle scorse feste del S[anto] Natale, mene hanno accresciuto l´obbligo, ma non gia la certeza havendome io tante altre riprove, che non posso piu dubitare. Vorrei solo poter meglio corrisponderle con farle conoscere qual sia anche mio verso V[ostra] E[xcellenza] in ognei occasione che mi si presentasse: In mancanza.... et assicurarla insieme che e sempre piu grande la stima, che io conservo per il suo merito, al quale prego da Dio benedetto ogni piu ver e desiderata prosperita´ (Translation: "Most Eminent and Most Reverend Sir, The new expressions of your affection, which you sent me during the last Christmas holidays, have increased the obligation, but not the certainty, as I have so many other proofs that I can no longer doubt. [WATERLOO BATTLE OF]: [HALKETT HUGH]: (1783-1863) British General who served in the Napoleonic Wars and fought at the Battle of Waterloo, commanding four battalions of Hanoverian militia. Halkett is remembered for having captured General Cambronne at Waterloo. An excellent, lengthy A.L.S., J Halkett, by Colonel James Halkett, son of Hugh Halkett, twenty-eight pages (comprising seven bifolia), 8vo, Farrance´s Hotel, near Eaton Square (London), 29th October 1862, to William Maynard Gomm (´My dear Sir William´). James Halkett states that his father is no longer able to read or write and that he is therefore replying on his behalf ´as I got him to tell me the story of his life the winter I spent in Hanover, & I then wrote down what he told me & can therefore repeat the story you ask about almost word for word as he gave it to me´, continuing to provide Gomm with ´a short sketch of my father´s proceedings & share in the glorious 18th June´ (the Battle of Waterloo), writing, in part, ´His brigade, composed of Hanoverian Landwehr, all untried troops, but partly officered & non-commissioned officered by the old King´s German Legion, formed part of General Clinton´s Division. After marching all night the bivouacked on the field of Waterloo. The Division.....was soon brought into the alignment with its right resting on Hougoumont. Whilst effecting this change the French cavalry attacked my father´s Brigade but they drew off on his forming en masse. At the time his first horse was killed, having both his hind legs shot away, the ball afterwards mowing down 8 men. His A.D.C. immediately dismounted & was shifting my father´s saddle on his horse when a shell fell near, wounded the man holding the horse & the horse scampered away. Colonel Dickson.....then caught a splendid English horse with new equipment & brought it to my father. At between 3 & 4 o/c in the afternoon General Clinton sent for my father & gave him the Duke´s orders to take whatever troops he liked & defend the garden & enclosures of Hougoumont......He immediately ordered the Salzgitter Battalion to attack the French who were in the wood, the Battalion did so, behaved very well, drove them out, & at the same time the skirmishers of the Brigade, who were excellent marksmen, formed together &.......drove back, with much spirit, the French skirmishers from the different enclosures, & my father then reported the place as secured. When, after 6 o´clock, the Duke gave orders for a general move in advance, my father placed himself at the head of the Osnabruck Battalion........He sent his Brigade Major to bring up the Battalion.....but the order was never received for Capt. Saffe was killed whilst carrying the order......Soon after the advance he fell in with old Garde Imperiale &......after driving them back he discovered the enemy´s artillery coming up out of a hollow way on his left, he ordered the skirmishers, supported by a company, to attack them.......About this time General Chasse (who afterwards defended Antwerp) galloped up to the front to see how matters were going on, & was full of admiration at the conduct of the troops.......Shortly after this an officer of the Duke´s staff galloped up & called out: "well done, Colonel Halkett, by God this is splendid". After a short pause he again advanced & under the heavy fire of the enemy´s artillery which had driven up on the left of the Imperial Guard, he attacked & took the guns.......Whilst following the French guards he saw their General, accompanied by two officers, come to the front to try & bring them to a stand. My father immediately threw forward his skirmishers & dashing full gallop at the General threatened to cut him down. He surrendered & declared himself to be General Cambronne......On leading his prisoner back, his horse, already wounded, received another shot & fell. With much difficulty he succeeded in getting him on his legs again when he discovered General Cambronne running back to the French Guards, he followed & caught him again, & seizing him by the aiguilette brought him back a prisoner & gave him over to a Sergeant......with orders to conduit him to the Duke of Wellington......Shortly after he had taken General Cambronne his horse was again hit & had his fore legs shot off.......He was soon remounted on a French Artillery horse which his men caught, but shortly after this third horse was shot under him. His men then shot a Frenchman who was mounted on a fine English, grey, Hussar horse, & brought him to my father who got a wet seat in the sheep´s skin which was satturated (sic) with the poor Frenchman´s blood.......After the French Guard had gone back, an officer belonging to them & who had been taken Prisoner, informed my father that Napoleon was amongst a large group of French officers & some French Cavalry who were hovering about his Brigade. He advanced his sharpshooters & these throwing some shot amongst them made them retire a short distance......My father then advanced on to the high road to Genappe & there fell in with the advanced Corps of the Prussians & shook hands with General Muffling. Not seeing any red coats near him, he halted & remained for the night in some straggling houses.....When returning next morning to re-join his Division he passed the guns which had been thrown into confusion......The Brigade when marching to Nivelle that morning was met by Lord Hill who highly complimented my father on its behaviour & marched at its head......When my father mentioned the gallant behaviour of the Brigade to Sir Henry Clinton, the General asked why this had not been mentioned the night before in order that he might have reported it to the Duke.....With regard to Cambronne´s "mot sublime" the only one my father heard was the one giving my father to understand that he surrendered, & it was pronounced in very good French! If anything ever was said about the Guard dieing etc., it certainly was at a later hour when Cambronne was safely lodged in our lines. My father was thrown together with the Comte d´Artois in Heligoland & when in Paris went to call on him. The future Charles X....did not think his countrymen fought well at Waterloo´. Halkett concludes his letter by writing of more social matters, but also makes a reference to the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Venta del Pozo which had been fought on 23rd October 1812 during the Peninsular War. A letter of wonderful content for its account of General Halkett´s involvement in the Battle of Waterloo, and not least in connection with the often disputed circumstances of the surrender of Cambronne to the British. Together with a slim oblong 12mo envelope wrapper annotated to the front panel in the hand of one of William Maynard Gomm´s relatives, ´Grass taken from the field of Waterloo, when I went over it with Uncle Gomm, Aunt Har[riet] & Miss Howard Vyse, July 23rd 1868´. With three small black seals to the verso, two of which remain intact. The contents of the envelope have not been examined, although dried grass can be seen through an opening at one end where the third seal is broken. Also including two other miscellaneous manuscript documents, one being a Report upon the proposed Sale of Land by Sir William Gomm to the Parish of Rotherhithe (1850). DAVOUT LOUIS NICOLAS: (1770-1823) Marshal of France, Duc d´Auerstaedt and Prince of Eckmuhl. Known as the Iron Marshal, Davout was the only Napoleonic Marshal not to have been defeated in battle by 1815. Unusual and lengthy A.L., signed Davout to the address leaf, three pages, 4to, Bruges, 10th September 1803, to his wife Aimée Leclerc, in French. Davout sends a warm letter to his wife, with the printed heading of "Republique Française - L. Davout, General of the Guard of the Government, Commandant in chief of the Bruges camp", and states in part `...pendant tout le voyage je ne pensais qu´à elle, qu´à notre cruelle séparation. Je me disais ma bonne aimée pleure maintenant et les larmes n´étaient pas éloignées de couler chez moi. Je t´assure qu´il n´y a que toi au monde capable de m´attendrir à ce point... Crois qu´aussitôt que je pourrai te mander de venir me rejoindre ce sera un courier pour ne pas perdre de temps qui t´en apportera l´ordre...´ (Translation: "During the entire trip I only thought of you, of our cruel separation. I said to myself, my dear one is crying now and the tears were not far from flowing on me. I assure you that there is only you in the world capable of moving me to this point... Believe that as soon as I can ask you to come and join me it will be a courier so as not to waste time will bring you the order...") Davout further refers to the works in their home, and asks his wife to choose the garden iron doors, the additional trees for the garden and access and assure that her taste will preside everything charmingly. Further again, Davout refers to his wife´s pregnancy, stating `Comment, ma chère aimée, ai-je pu être aussi longtemps sans te parler du grand motif de consolation que tu portes probablement dans ton sein le petit Louis t´a t-il déjà donné des coups de pieds, tes maux de coeur ont-ils augmentés? J´ai tant d´espérance que je ne mets nullement cela en doute. Embrasse-le bien de ma part et recommande lui de ne point trop tourmenter sa petite maman...´ (Translation: "How, my dear beloved, could I have been so long without speaking to you about the great reason for consolation that you probably carry in your bosom, has little Louis ever kicked you inside, your heart aches have they increased? I have so much hope that I in no way doubt it. Give him a good kiss for me and advise him not to torment his little mother too much...") With address leaf. G to VGDavout was noted for his loyalty to his long-time second wife Louise Aimée Julie Davout (1782-1868), sister-in-law of Pauline Bonaparte, whom he married in 1801 and who remained with him until his death. Their marriage was loving and the couple seem to have been faithful to each other despite very long periods of separation. They had eight children, four of whom died in childhood. At the time of the present letter the couple had lost their first child, Paul, earlier that same year, and Louise was pregnant again. Although Davout calls the baby Louis, it will be a girl this time, Joséphine, who will also die shortly after in childhood.

GOMES ANTONIO CARLOS: (1836-1896) Brazilian Composer. Largely considered the first New World composer having his work accepted in Europe. An excellent A.L.S., `A. Carlos Gomes´, four pages, 8vo, Milan, 20th September 1876, to Giovannina Lucca, in Italian. The letter bears to the upper left border an attractive red embossed seal with his intials "C.G". Gomes is furious after reading his correspondent´s letter referring to the copyright of his opera Fosca and responds forcefully, stating in part `Stimatissima Signora G. Lucca, vi prego di leggere ancora la vostra lettera del 12 Aprile 75 a me diretta, e vi convincerete dei miei diritti d´autore sul primo nolo. Quella fu una condizione proposta da me ed acorttata da voi, su cui ora, non credo, porrete alcun dubbio. Nella vostra lettera d´oggi voi dite di non capire nulla delle nie laguanze! Ahime!´ (Translation: "Most esteemed Mrs. G. Lucca, I ask you to read again your letter dated 12th April 1975 addressed to me, and you will be convinced of my right on the copyright on the first rental. That was a condition proposed by me and implemented by you, about which, now, I don't think, you will have any doubt. In your letter today you say you don't understand anything about my complaints! Alas!") Gomes uses bold exclamations and underlines, showing his anger and making it clear that he is not going to give up, saying `Per l´amor di dio, oppuredel Diavolo, signora Giovannina; volete che io prenda parte nei contratti da voi fatti cogli impresarii, ai quali voi accordate delle facilitazioni tutto a modo vostro? Il Guarany e roba vostra, e di quell´opera potete disporre (per l´Italia) a modo vostro, ma della Fosca, no!...´ (Translation: "For the love of God, or the Devil, Signora Giovannina; you want me to take part in the contracts you make with the entrepreneurs, to whom you grant facilities and all in your own way? The Guarany is your stuff, and you can dispose of that work (for Italy) in your own way, but not Fosca!...") Further and before conculding, Gomes states `Io intendo, in conclusione che, la Fosca non vale meno delle altre opera, e esigo i miei 30% sul valore di 6000, di nolo, e cosi deve essere...Credo ora di averoi parlato ben chiaro su questo affare, dal quale non transigo...´ (Translation: "I mean, in conclusion, that the Fosca is not worth less than the other works, and I demand my 30% on the value of 6000, and so it must be... I believe that I have now spoken very clearly about this deal, which I am not willing to accept any change...") DERAIN ANDRE: (1880-1954) French artist, painter and sculptor, a co-founder of Fauvism with Henri Matisse. A.L.S., A Derain, one page, 4to (feint squared graph paper), Lisieux, 31st May 1915, to a gentleman, in French. Derain states that he was touched by the expressions of friendship contained in his correspondent´s letter although continues to write in a sober manner, ´depuis la guerre j’ai été très abandonné des milieux de peinture, je me demande même s’il m’arrivera jamais d’en refaire´ (Translation: ´since the war I have been very much abandoned by painting circles, and I wonder if I will ever paint again´) further displaying his disillusionment, ´Je serai aussi très reconnaissant si par une mission quelconque vous pouviez me tirer d’ici le plu tôt possible et me faire passer soit dans l’aviation soit dans l’automobile mais je crains que cela ne soit pour vous la source de multiples ennuis. Mais vous me rendriez un réel service si vous pouviez me faire partir d’ici par n’importe où même aux Dardanelles dans un emploi quelconque ou sur le front´ (Translation: ´I would also be very grateful if by some mission you could get me out of here as soon as possible and get me into either aviation or motoring, but I'm afraid that would be a source of a lot of trouble for you. But you would be doing me a real favour if you could get me out of here anywhere, even to the Dardanelles in some job or at the front´). Derain concludes by offering his gratitude and thanks his correspondent for the kindness that they have shown to the absent artist´s wife. Some very light, minor age wear and a couple of small tears to the edges of the folds, about VGAt the beginning of the World War I, Derain was mobilised in the artillery, in the Lisieux infantry regiment. He served in Champagne, the Somme, Verdun and the Chemin des Dames until 1917, then in the Aisne and the Vosges. The years immediately before the war are sometimes described as Derain´s gothic period and during the war itself the artist produced little work although did provide a set of illustrations for Andre Breton´s first book, Monte de Piete, in 1916.

RAINIER III: (1923-2005) Sovereign Prince of Monaco 1949-2005. A lengthy and revealing T.L.S., Rainier Pce. Monaco. with holograph salutation and subscription, five pages (separate leaves), 4to, n.p. (Monte Carlo?), 11th September 1968, to Marcel [Palmero], Consul General of Monaco, on the Prince´s blue monogrammed stationery, in both French and English (the latter with many grammatical and spelling mistakes, retained in the extracts that follow). Rainier writes an expansive letter in which he expresses his strong opinions regarding various aspects of life in Monaco, as well as the behaviour of Wilfred Groote, an adviser to Prince Rainier and a key figure related to the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM), commencing in French and explaining that it is essential for Rainier to meet Palmero in order to talk about business and the SBM and take stock of the situation, ´La situation actuelle, ne peut et ne doit durer. J´ai pour habitude d´etre tres franc avec vous....et cést ainsi que nos rapports demeurent toujours confiants et solides. Je vous demandes de considerer ce que je vous ecris, comme tout a fait confidentiel. Cela doit rester entre nous bien entendu. Principalement, il s´agit de Groote.....ce garcon semble vraiment maintenant avoir une curieuse conception de sa fonction, et ses methodes de direction me paraissent peu psychologiques, et dans le domaine des relations humaines il semble denue de toute sensibilite. Se mettant a dos tout le monde, par sa facon de faire, beaucoup plus que par effet des mesures ou decisions imposees par necessite d´une reforme de la gestion que je suis le premier a vouloir et approuver. Seulement, il y a des erreurs commises, et ses erreurs vont a l´encontre de ce que je souhaite avec tant d´ardeur: la reprise de l´exploitation de la societe et de ses entreprises. Groote seems to refuse any advice or opinion, believing himself to be an expert´), continuing to express his views on how just one managing director should operate within the SBM andd that he should  have a buffer man ´who sees to the details and follows through avoiding thus that the director general be on the front line, this I told Groote many months ago, telling him that he could obtain a lot if he went the right way with the personel..to crack the whip; is fine...but not on peoples backbone! First it is not intimate...it is cold and very drafty..and above all the same monumental mistake, of the old summer sporting club, has been repeated..people sit with there back to the sea!!! facing naturally the band stand. Many points that I thought I had made clear to you and to Groote have not been taken at all into consideration! WHY?´, further remarking ´Mes avis, mes conseild, et plus encore mes requetes ou demandes sont perdues pourquoi alors les formulerai-je? Je voulais que cet etablissement ait une vraie nouvelle personnalite axee sur la clientele plus jeune, avec des prix appropriees. Photograph by Stax (uncredited). Signed by both in blue fountain pen inks to the lower border, Laurel adding an inscription (´Hello Ray!´) in his hand. DU MAURIER DAPHNE: (1907-1989) English novelist. An interesting, small archive of letters, documents and photographs signed by Daphne du Maurier, relating in particular to her beloved Cornwall, where she spent much of her life and where many of her works are set, comprising a T.L.S., Daphne du Maurier, two pages, 8vo, Kilmarth, Par, Cornwall, 30th November 1973, to Hans G. Kosters, stating, in part, ´Like many other writers, I myself think the novels written about other places besides Cornwall are sometimes better! For instance, "The Scapegoat" (set in France), "The Progress of Julius" (set in France)....and even "The Flight of the Falcon" (set in Italy) have more depth, to my mind, than my Cornish novels, though they may not have been so popular.....Meanwhile, I have answered your questions as best I could, and forgive this short letter, but.....I am working hard on research of the live and times of the two Bacon brothers - the elder, Anthony, is barely known to the non-historical reader, and was one of the first "secret agents" of those times, employed by the ill-fated Earl of Essex. His brother Francis is of course well known´; a second T.L.S., Daphne du Maurier, two pages, 8vo, Kilmarth, Par, Cornwall, 7th September 1974, also to Kosters, thanking him for his letter and a newspaper (´I only wish I could read German!´) and continuing to comment on tourism in Cornwall, ´The Cornish coast has been very crowded with tourists this past month, and although we like them to enjoy our beaches I wish they would not leave their rubbish behind them; all the debris of thousands of picnics, papers, tins, bottles, cans, which the tide cannot sweep away! I dare say you have the same in Germany, not only on your beaches but in the forests. It is a great pity´, and also referring to Golden Lads, her biography of Sir Francis and Anthony Bacon, ´I very much doubt if it will be published before next spring or summer......Printing seens to take a long time these days, at any rate in England´; an interesting questionnaire, four pages, 4to, n.p. (Cornwall), n.d. (1974), comprising over twenty questions regarding Cornwall and Du Maurier herself, to which the novelist provides her typescript answers, seventeen of which are signed with her initials (´D du M´), expressing her belief that the tourist industry in Cornwall does not benefit the tinners, clayworkers, fishermen or farmers and noting that ´Mass tourism has already spoilt Spain, Portugal, Brittany, and Greece´, stating that ´The discerning visitor will not cross the Tamar if he finds Blackpool the other side. Those who wish for Blackpool will be better served in Lancashire!´, observing that ´Cornwall is a narrow peninsular. It cannot feed or house a mass invasion of tourists. Nor does the majority of the population desire this invasion´, declaring ´I am appalled at the idea of High Rise buildings in Cornwall. I would like to blast them from the ground in London, Paris, and elsewhere!´, and also stating ´The challenge must be to the young, whether in Cornwall or in the world. They will inherit what we have bequeathed to them. If what we bequeath is ugly, and through our fault, surely they will blame us? Or, if they are without appreciation of the beautiful, this is equally our fault, for it means we have not taught them understanding. My voice is not important. Perhaps I do belong to Cornwall but Cornwall does not only belong to me. It belongs, as every place and country must do, to those who live their lives in it now, today, and will do so through the years, and if the memory of those who are gone and lie beneath the soil still lingers on through the centuries, then perhaps this can be an inspiration to the living to build well upon the old foundations´, followed by a series of questions and answers on a more personal level, stating that she has lived at Kilmarth since 1969 and that she generally does not write for more than five hours a day, adding ´I am not a recluse! Family and friends come to stay. But I do not go often to London´ and in response to a question about whether it disturbs her to be called the ´best-selling author´ in the world, Du Maurier responds ´I do not think this has been true for a number of years! Mandela thanks his correspondent for her assistance in helping to host a Children's Party in Cape Town on 4th July 1997 in honour of his 79th Birthday, continuing to remark 'As you know, all children are very close to my heart but particularly those youngsters who are forced to face tremendous difficulties and tragedies in their young lives. The children who attended my party were especially vulnerable, facing severe life-threatening diseases, and by giving support to this Party you helped me give them a day they will never forget' and further adding 'The event was a wonderful success - which is still being commented on - and reflects the very high degree of commitment, professionalism and sheer hard work that you, as part of the organising team, put into the planning and execution of it'. Signed by the actor in blue ink with his name alone to the image. A pencil annotation in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the signature was obtained in person at the Gartenbaukino (during the Vienna International Film Festival, 2017). Waltz won the first of his two Best Supporting Actor Oscars for his performance as Landa. EX

PHILIP V: (1683-1746) King of Spain 1700-24 & 1724-46. Grandson of Louis XIV. A very fine L.S., Yo el Rey, one page, 4to, Madrid, 30th August 1707, to the Count of Peralada, in Spanish. The King informs his correspondent about the joyful new and announces the birth of his first child, his son and heir the Prince Louis I of Spain, named after the King´s grandfather Louis XIV of France. The King states in part `Es tan singular el beneficio con que la divina misericordia nos ha favorecido en el dichoso parto de la Reina, mi muy cara y amada, en el dia 25 de Agosto a las diez y dieciséis minutos de la mañana, dando a luz un Principe a estos Reinos, y en el mayor consuelo… y benigna protección con que nos mira. Continuándola con la salud y buena disposición con que ha quedado y prosigue la Reina…´ (Translation: `The benefit with which divine mercy has favoured us in the Queen´s blissful childbirth, my very dear and beloved spouse, on August 25th at ten and sixteen minutes in the morning, giving birth to a Prince for these Kingdoms, and in the greatest relief... and the benign protection with which he looks at us. Continuing with the health and good disposition with which the Queen has remained and continues…´) Attractively countersigned by Francisco de Quincoces. With address leaf, bearing a partially damaged paper seal affixed. Very small age wear with two very small holes corresponding to the seal to the verso, not affecting the text or signatures. Guillem Rocafull-Puxmarin y Rocaberti (?-1728) Spanish Noble. Count of Peralada and Grande of Spain. Louis, King of Spain (1707-1724) He was born on 25th August 1707 at the Palacio del Buen Retiro, in Madrid, five days before the present letter was written. Eldest son of the reigning King Philip V of Spain and his wife Maria Luisa of Savoy. His reign is one of the shortest in history, lasting seven months, from January 1724 when his father abdicated in his favour, to August 1724 when he died at the very early age of seventeen of smallpox.

WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal, the victor of Waterloo. British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. A poignant A.L.S., Wn, three pages, 4to, London, 23rd February 1829, to 'My dearest Betsy'. Wellington commences his letter by writing 'You are in good health and moreover you are a reasonable woman, and I therefore select you as the person to whom I ought to announce a very terrible event of which I heard yesterday evening' and warns 'You must summon to your aid all your fortitude and your sense of religion; as you must be aware that you have not only to bear this misfortune yourself; but by your exhortations & example to induce others to bear it of whom one is ill and the other but little accustomed to to govern her first impulses in anything'. Wellington continues to explain 'You are aware that your uncle Genl. Harper has long been afflicted by a disorder in the circulation near his heart called an ossification of one of the vessels. It appears that he was sitting at breakfast lately with his family and got up to talk over with his son some arrangement connected with the marriage of the latter, when he suddenly dropped down dead! The person from whom I had the intelligence was Mr. Rush who dined with me yesterday. He had received the account direct at the end of last week. He had no doubt of the fact' and concludes the letter 'I had the pleasure of being acquainted with General Harper; and for his sake, for that of his family and for yours & your dear sisters, I cannot express to you what pain this event has given me'. A True Story of Reincarnation by Dennis Dallison, published by the Unarius Educational Foundation, 1985, signed by seven American pilots who participated in Operation Vengeance, the American top secret military operation to kill Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto of the Imperial Japanese Navy on 18th April 1943 during the Solomon Islands campaign in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, comprising Rex T. Barber (1917-2001) American Colonel and fighter pilot, credited for shooting down Yamamoto´s plane; Thomas G. Lanphier Jr. (1915-1987) Panama-born American Colonel and fighter pilot who was firstly given sole credit, and later partial credit, shared with Barber, for shooting down Yamamoto´s plane; John W. Mitchell (1914-1995) American Colonel, a flying ace who was the leader of Operation Vengeance; Louis Kittel (1918-1998) American Lieutenant Colonel; Doug Canning (1919-2016) American Lieutenant Colonel; Julius ´Jack´ Jacobson (d.2005) American Major; and Besby Holmes (1917-2006) American Lieutenant Colonel, the latter four all being fighter pilots who provided air cover and acted as reserves during the mission. Six of the ink signatures appear to the title page, most adding their ranks etc. beneath their signatures, and Holmes has signed to the opposite page with a lengthy inscription in his hand, in part, ´I had as you know two encounters with Admiral Yamamoto. The first when his forces beat the hell out of us at Hawaii Dec. 7 1941. The second was Apr 18 1943 when we intercepted Adm Yamamoto and his entire personal staff. No one knew who had shot down Adm Y until a portion of Adm Ugaki´s diary was published.....´. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG

LAGERFELD KARL & HADID ZAHA: Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019) German fashion Designer. Lagerfeld was known as the creative director of Chanel since 1983 until his death. He was recognized for always wearing his black sunglasses, gloves and high detachable collars, & Zaha Hadid (1950-2016) British-Iraqi Architect and Designer. Known as the Queen of the Curve, her works include the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympics and the Guangzhou Opera House among many others. Hadid was the first woman to have ever been awarded the Pritzker Architecture prize. A very fine signed 5 x 7 photograph by Lagerfeld and Hadid, the image depicting them standing in a full length pose, on a balcony with views over a Venice channel. BELL ALEXANDER GRAHAM: (1847-1922) Scottish scientist & inventor, credited with inventing the first practical telephone. A very fine vintage signed sepia 8 x 10 photograph of Bell in a luxurious open-air pedicab, the inventor looking resplendent in a plain white suit as he sits comfortably in the wicker seat at the front of the tricycle. The original press photograph bears the credit stamp of Underwood & Underwood to the verso and a neatly affixed printed caption indicates that the photograph was taken at Palm Beach (Florida) on 27th January 1916. Signed (´Alexander Graham Bell´) by Bell with his name alone in black fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image. Accompanied by the large folded front panel of the original registered post envelope addressed to Mr. Y. Minami of Okura & Co. Ltd in New York City. Signed photographs of Bell are rare and desirable, and the present example is a particularly unusual and appealing image enhanced by an excellent example of Bell´s signature. Book signed, being a hardback edition of Patterns - Divided, Mirrored, Repeated, First edition published by Heni Publishing, London and Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther Konig, Cologne, 2012, the profusely illustrated oblong 8vo volume consisting of colour images taken from an abstract painting created by Richter in 1990 (CR: 724-4) and, as the introductory text explains 'divided vertically into 2, then 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, and 4096 strips', additionally stating 'This process (twelve stages of division) results in 8190 strips, each of which is the height of the original image. With each stage of division the strips become progressively thinner (a strip of the 12th division is 0.08 mm).....Each strip is then mirrored and repeated which results in patterns.....'. NAGATSUKA RYUJI: (1924- ) Japanese Kamikaze. One of the few Kamikaze survivors. Pilot Fighter serving the Royal Japanese air forces in 1945. Nagatsuka became an author after WWII and is best known for his work I was a Kamikaze, translated in multiple languages. A good and lengthy A.L.S., `Ryugi et Yoko Nagatsuka´, one page, folio, Tokyo, 15th November 1973, to Monsieur Fernand Fossier, in French. The letter is written on his printed stationery in his capacity as literature Professor of the Nihon University in Tokyo. Nagatsuka thanks his French correspondents for the letters received and states in part `Je souhaite que Florence apprenne le japonais pour être capable de lire mes articles sur George Sand.... ´ (Translation: "I wish Florence would learn Japanese to be able to read my articles on George Sand...") Nagatsuka further refers to the petrol crisis of 1973 and how much it is going to affect Japan, and further refers to war veterans and to survivors of special missions, saying `Mes anciens camarades de combats, survivants des missions d´attaque spéciale, me renvoient petit à petit les photos signées... Nous parlons très souvent de vous trois ainsi que de Madame Costes...´ (Translation: "My former combat comrades, survivors of the special attack missions, are gradually sending me back the signed photos... LAVOISIER ANTOINE-LAURENT DE: (1743-1794) French nobleman and chemist who was central to the 18th century chemical revolution and who had a large influence on both the history of chemistry and the history of biology. L.S., Lavoisier, three pages, folio, Paris, 11th August 1793, to Louis-Francois-Antoine Arbogast, in French. Lavoisier commences his letter by informing Arbogast that ´L´Academie des sciences la seance qui a precede sa separation a nomme en execution du decret de la Convention, quatre commissaires pour former un apercu de depenses qu´occasionneront l´establissement et l´envoy des nouvelles mesures dans les departements et districts de la Republique. Vous en avez ete prevenu Citoyen par une lettre du C[itoyen]. Darcet qui etait alors President´ (Translation: ´The Academy of Sciences, in the session which preceded its separation, appointed, in execution of the decree of the Convention, four commissioners to draw up an outline of the expenditure which the establishment and dispatch of the new measures will cause in the departments and districts of the Republic. You were informed of this, Citizen, by a letter from C[itozen]. OASIS: A colour 25 x 35 promotional poster issued for the debut studio album Definitely Maybe (1994) by the English rock band Oasis, individually signed by all five band members comprising Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, Paul ´Bonehead´ Arthurs, Paul ´Guigsy´ McGuigan and Tony McCaroll, featuring the colour image of the band by rock photographer Michael Spencer Jones that was used as the album´s front cover. Printed by GB Posters of Sheffield for Underworld Merchandising Ltd. Signed by each of the five band members in bold black inks to clear areas of the image, most with either their first names or nicknames only. Two neat, lengthy cuts to the left and upper edges where the white borders meet the image, and with some slight tape staining to the extreme edges. About VGProvenance: The vendor informs us that the signatures were obtained in person by an employee of Virgin when Oasis made an appearance at the Virgin Megastore in Marble Arch, London on 30th August 1994.Definitely Maybe went straight to Number 1 in the UK Albums Chart and became the fastest-selling debut album in British music history at the time. In 2006 a readers´ poll conducted by the NME voted Definitely Maybe to be the greatest album of all time.

PEI-TSUN HAU: (1919-2020) Chinese Politician and military Officer. Premier of the Republic of China 1990-93 and the longest-serving Chief of the General Staff of the Republic of China Armed Forces 1981-89. Pei-Tsun was the first former Republic of China premier to visit Mainland China in 2017 since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Signed and inscribed 5 x 7 colour photograph by Pei-Tsun, the image showing the Chinese Politician in a head and shoulders pose. Boldly signed to the lower white border. Dated 25th July 1990. VG .

RIVERA DIEGO: (1886-1957) Mexican painter. A significant Autograph Manuscript signed, Diego Rivera, thirteen pages (separate leaves, written to the rectos only), 4to, n.p., n.d. (annotated April 1933 in pencil in another hand at the head of the first page), in French. The untitled manuscript relates to one of the artist´s most famous works, the Detroit Industry Murals (1932-33) and states, in part, ´Comme programme pour la decoration du jardin couvert cour centrale du Musee de l´instiut d´Art de Detroit, j´ai choisie comme theme l´expression plastique du mouvement oudulant qui se trouve dans les courants d´eau, les ordes electriques les stratifications des differentes couches du sol de la terre et en general dans le developement continuel de la vie.......Le Musee d´Art d´une ville, et specialement dans le cas de l´institut d´art de la ville de Detroit est on doit etre, la cellule centrale pour le developpement de la culture esthetique de la communaute, pour cela, dans le developement de mon travail je fus ammene a preciser de plus en plus la centralisation de l´ensemble des fresques dans l´expression du germe, peinte sur le mur central face a la porte principale d´acces a la cour. Le germe, un enfant, non un embryon contenu dans l´interieur de l´oignon qui s´enracine dans la terre vegetale acumulee dans la conque d´un ancien lac. Sur des lits de sable couches d´eau et sel et gisements de fer, charbon et pierre de chaux. Realite geologique du sol de Michigan et raison primondiale de l´existance de la vie de Detroit......En dessous de ce panneau et des deux cotes de la porte d´entree, est peinte la representation du generateur de vapeur et son ouvrier mecanicien, et du generateur d´electricite et son ingenieur, la force ouviere et la force creatrice de l´imagination et la connaissance. Combustion, expansion, energie positive et negative, mort pour creer de la vie, vie qui amene la mort, mouvement rithmique en onder continues. Tout en haut, l´aviation, a gauche les contructeurs d´aeroplanes usant de la rondage autogine electrique correspondant a ca un petit panneau du frise montre les tourne-soleils analogues en forme aux moteurs d´avion.......L´effort createur merveilleux des ouviers de toutes les races du monde qu´integrent la population industrielle de Detroit, et qui son expression du caracter international et universel du continent americain, et des Etats Unis aussi, circonstance qui est la plus grande force de l´amerique dans la profondeur de l´avenir historique.......La pierre de chaux est analogisee avec la race blanche et le sable a la jaune par des semblables raisons que le fer a l´indienne et le charbon a la noire.......La "predella" en grisaille contient une serie de petits panneaux qui montrent des operations fabriles complementaires au long d´une journee de travail a gauche les travailleur entrant a l´usine au matin marquant le temps a droite ils sortent du travail, a cette angle a l´extreme de la grande composition ont ete peints les portraits du Docteur William Valentiner que par sa volonte pleine de sympathie et bonte pour l´auteur des peintures etant directeur du Musee, fit possible la commande et de Monsieur Edsel B. Ford qui par la liberalite de son criterium, par son donatif, et des grandes facilites qu´il donnat pour le travail fit possible l´execution des fresques, dont il fit don a la ville de Detroit´. At this corner, at the extreme of the large composition, are painted the portraits of Dr William Valentiner, who, by his willingness, full of sympathy and kindness for the author of the paintings and director of the Museum, made the commission possible, and of Mr Edsel B. Ford, who, by the liberality of his criterium, his donation, and the great facilities he gave for the work, made possible the execution of the frescoes, which he donated to the city of Detroit´). VGIn 1932 Wilhelm Valentiner, Director of the Detroit Instiute of Arts, and the American business executive Edsel Ford, commissioned Rivera to create the Detroit Industry Murals, a series of frescoes consisting of twenty-seven panels depicting industry at the Ford Motor Company and in Detroit. Together they surround the interior Rivera Court in the Detroit Institute of Arts. Painted between 1932 and 1933, they were considered by Rivera to be his most successful work.
