New Zealand Antarctic Expeditions 1908 Shackleton Expedition block of four, SGA1 used.Note: On Shackleton's return to the Antarctic as leader of the expedition on the Nimrod, he was sworn in as a New Zealand Postmaster and given a supply of New Zealand stamps, 1d SG4192 Royle and SG418B Waterloo, with the over print King Edward VII land, together with a date stamp and registration labels, and various Postmaster books for proper business. The Nimrod was towed to the ice edge by S.S. Koonya to save on coal, and the first batch of letters from the Nimrod returned on the Koonya on the 15th of January 1908. The above example has a cancelled state of February 27th, 1908, and therefore carried on the Nimrod until its return.

First World War period compass by Negretti & Zambra of military type, stamped to reverse, with locking mechanism, the dial 3.2 cm diam. Inscribed " C J Lane Leicester Museum" to inside of cover. Condition Report Surface wear, marks and scratches throughout. Losses to decal on glass. All scientific instruments are sold untested for accuracy in measurement. Unfortunately we do not have a verifiably calibrated compass for comparison. The compass seems to consistently face the same direction and return to that direction when turned.

Lacquer/paint is especially worn to the top of the Mils MK1. All scientific instruments are sold as untested for accuracy in measurement.
