The partially printed cheque, completed in typescript, is drawn on the account of Marilyn Monroe Productions Inc. at the Colonial Trust Company and made payable to May Reis for the sum of $246.20. With a bank cancellation to the centre dated at New York, 27th December 1960, and a much lighter and barely noticeable cancellation beneath, only very minimally touching the first letter of Monroe´s signature. Endorsed and signed (´For deposit, May Reis´) by Reis to the verso. VGMay Reis (1904-1987) Private secretary to Marilyn Monroe from 1957, becoming a central figure in Monroe´s life as a friend, confidante and, as some biographers have observed, a maternal figure.

NELSON HORATIO: (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. A good A.L.S., Horatio Nelson (with his right-hand), two pages, 4to, Vado Bay (near Genoa), 13th August 1795, to the diplomat Francis Drake. Nelson states that he 'can just take a pen in my hand' to express his obligation to Drake for their letter and continues to comment on his expectations of the French navy, 'the first dark night & strong wind I expect to hear of their being off. I think they will push past Vado Bay….however I am prepared in all points for their reaction & they must have more than usual good luck to escape. I wish the Admiral [Hotham] would arrive. I think the General would like to see him & Frederick is here waiting with Dispatches which he brought from England, but I cannot tell where on the seas to look for the Adl. but Vado Bay. He cannot be very long. Genl. De Vins has some plan in his head which will probably be carried into execution in the course of a week should the Adl. not arrive. I am anxious to give the General every support in my power & he is very anxious to get further westward'. In concluding Nelson adds that he is sending the declarations and papers for Captain Cockburn and Dr. West which he trusts will be fully sufficient. With blank integral leaf. William Hotham (1736-1813) 1st Baron Hotham. British Admiral who served as Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet 1794-95. Joseph Nikolaus de Vins (1732-1798) Austrian General who, during the French Revolutionary Wars, commanded the joint forces of Austria and the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont from 1792-95.
MENOTTI GIAN CARLO: (1911-2007) Italian composer and librettist. A.N.S., Gian Carlo, to the recto of his personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card, featuring his printed name to the centre and with no address indicated, n.d., in Italian. Menotti writes 'con mille grazie e molto affetto' (Translation: 'with many thanks and much affection') and further adds a small drawing of a face alongside his signature, also identifying himself as the composer of Maria Golovin. Some staining and overall age toning, slightly affecting the text and signature, with a few minor smudges to the ink and traces of former mounting to the verso, FRMaria Golovin is an opera in three acts by Menotti which was first performed in August 1958.

GANDHI MAHATMA: (1869-1948) Indian political and spiritual leader during the Indian independence movement. A good A.L.S., yours, Old Friend, (although also signed ´from M. K. Gandhi´ to the head of the first page), four pages (written to the first and fourth and second and third sides of two bifolia), 8vo, Ahmedabad, 30th July n.y., to [Hermann Kallenbach] (´My dear friend´). Gandhi states that he has received his friend´s letter ´from your strange & new abode´ and that it had arrived shortly before his time for grinding wheat, ´I thought of you whilst grinding. I wished you were opposite me helping to grind. I then thought how we w[oul]d have talked away, how you would have perhaps kicked against the monotony of it, how you would have wanted to turn the handle alone, how I would then have gone for you & how you would have patiently put up with all that & so we would have made ourselves merry. But it was only a dream. I sighed & I laughed´. Gandhi continues to write in a philosophical manner, ´The experiences you are undergoing are all a preparation for a better future, no matter what it is to be. I shall fondly hope that these experiences are nothing but an asset for our joint life. War must end one day and one day we must meet & again be physically near one another as we are in spirits today. Let not the life there have a depressing effect upon you. Then it will be well with you. Mind is its own place; it can make heaven of hell & hell of heaven. My experiences are no less varied than yours. Every day brings me some fresh experience whether from the inmates of the Ashram or from visitors. All these experiences teach me to be stronger & more & more confirmed in my views´ and also sends news of his family and other matters, ´Manilal [the second son of Gandhi] has now commenced his tuition in a handwove business. Jamnadas [a nephew of Gandhi] has already been to a factory. Tamil study is getting on. I have three Tamilians on the farm engaged in teaching everybody Tamil. I think that the order that is being evolved will please you. It may be that you will just come here when we are best fitted to please your Germanic exactness in all we do. Only be as exacting from yourself as you are from those who surround you´. A personal and endearing letter of fine content demonstrating the warm friendship that existed between Gandhi and Kallenbach, as well as their philosophical and spiritual exchanges, and also illustrating Gandhi´s optimism in the face of war and his indestructible faith in the future of mankind. Some light tape stains to various edges of the letter, only very slightly affecting a few words of text and not the signatures. [CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) English archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. Manuscript list of illustrations, unsigned and in an unidentified hand, one page, folio, n.p., n.d. (c.1927). The page is headed The Tomb of Tut-ankh-amen and relates to the illustrations to appear in Volume II of Carter´s book The Tomb of Tutankhamun: Volume II - Burial Chamber & Mummy (1927). The list comprises twenty-five plate illustrations, each individually numbered and with an indication of the page number and text of the relevant caption, including a frontispiece portrait of Tutankhamen, a first glimpse of the sarcophagus, the mummy of the King, a floral and bead collarette, an alabaster calcite lamp, a cosmetic jar, several of the King´s gold coffin, and the King´s perfume box etc. Annotated to the verso ´List of Subjects´. CHEVALIER MAURICE: (1888-1972) French actor, singer and entertainer, the recipeint of an Honorary Academy Award. Two vintage signed postcard photographs of Chevalier, both different and unusual images, the first depicting the entertainer wearing a bathing suit whilst performing a handstand outdoors, signed in blue fountain pen ink across a light area at the base of the image, ´Je ne te perds pas de vue!!! Maurice´ (Translation: ´I can´t let you out of my sight!!! Maurice´) and the second showing Chevalier standing outdoors in a full-length pose in a garden and holding a watering can in one hand, signed in black fountain pen ink at the base of the image, ´Thank you old pal - everything is O.K., Maurice´. FROMME LYNETTE: (1948- ) American Criminal, a member of the infamous Manson Family who was imprisoned for her attempted assassination of American President Gerald R. Ford in 1975. A.L.S., Red [being her name within the Manson Family], two pages, 4to, West Virginia, 29th May - 2nd July 1981, to Nuel Melton Emmons. Fromme states that she has received nothing from Emmons regarding the two wrist bands which she sent him, thinking maybe he has been on vacation, and continuing 'I took a walk around the institution - the first I've seen of it. I'm due to get out of lock-up in August & I expect my health will improve then', before returning to the subject of the wrist bands, 'Here's a stamped postcard to let me know if you rec'd all 3 wrist bands. I'm concerned about that & its hung me up'. In a postscript Fromme writes that she is preparing some articles to send to Emmons. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Fromme and signed by her with her initials ('LF') in the return address panel. DIDEROT DENIS: (1713-1784) French philosopher, art critic and writer, a significant figure during the Age of Enlightenment. An extremely rare A.L.S., Diderot, one page, small 4to, n.p., n.d., seemingly a retained draft of a letter to Joseph de La Porte, in French. The head of the letter is annotated by Diderot 'Modele de la lettre a M. L'abbe de la Porte' (Translation: 'Sample letter to M. L'abbe de la Porte') and his text states, in full, 'Des personnes mal informees, Monsieur, ayant repondu que la traduction imprimee du pere de famille de Goldoni etais faite par M. de Lavie et celle du veritable ami Veron de Foubonnais; La connaissance que j'ai eue de ces deux traductions m'oblige de declarer que celles qui paraissent sont tres differentes, et j'eu constate que ni l'un ni l'autre n'ont eu part a l'edition de ces ouvrages' (Translation: 'Some ill-informed people, Sir, having replied that the printed translation of Goldoni's pere de famille was by M. de Lavie and that of the true friend Veron de Foubonnais; The knowledge I have had of these two translations obliges me to declare that those which appear are very different, and I have noted that neither of them had any part in the publication of these works'). [DIANA]: (1961-1997) Princess of Wales, the first wife of King Charles III (when Prince of Wales). SPENCER CHARLES (1964- ) 9th Earl Spencer, Viscount Althorp. British peer and author, the younger brother of Diana, Princess of Wales. Book signed and inscribed, being a hardback edition of Earl Spencer´s Tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, privately published, Althorp, 1997. The handsome edition features the full text of the eulogy the Earl gave at the funeral of his sister, Princess Diana, at Westminster Abbey on 8th September 1997. Signed (´Charles Spencer´) and inscribed by the Earl in blue ink to the first page. Attractively bound in silk boards with gilt stamped title to the spine and a printed label to the front cover within gilt panelling and with marbled endpapers. Contained within the original pale blue card presentation box with the Althorp device printed in silver to the lid. ROSSINI GIOACHINO: (1792-1868) Italian composer of operas. D.S., Gioachino Rossini, two pages, 4to (onion skin paper), Paris, 15th March 1866, in Italian. The partially printed document bears the heading ‘Alla Prefettura della Provincia di Milano’ (Translation: ‘To the Prefecture of the Province of Milan’ and relates to Rossini’s opera Otello, the composer acknowledging that he is the true author of the work, the printed text stating ‘Gioachimo Rossini intendendo riservarsi formalmente i diritti spettanti agli autori delle opere dell'ingegno a norma della legge 25 giugno 1865 presenta N.3 esemplari dell'opera sottodistinta pubblicata per cura del R. Stabilimento Ricordi in Milano, ed unisce la ricevuta della tassa pagata in lire nove’ (Translation: ‘Gioachimo Rossini intending to formally reserve the rights due to the authors of intellectual works in accordance with the law of 25 June 1865, he presents 3 copies of the work listed below published by the Ricordi Establishment in Milan, and attaches the receipt of the tax paid in nine lire’), with the name of the opera listed in the table beneath, along with the year of its premiere, 1816. Beneath Rossini’s signature appears an autograph statement signed by a public official in which he attests to having received three copies of Rossini’s work. A similar signed statement appears to the verso dated at Florence, 1st May 1866. With a pale violet Revenue stamp affixed to the upper left corner of the first page and two official circular ink stamps to recto and verso. Some ink show through owing to the nature of the paper. VGOtello, Rossini’s three-act opera inspired by William Shakespeare’s play Othello, premiered at the Teatro del Fondo in Naples on 4th December 1816.

[CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) English archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. HALL HENRY: (1873-1930) English Egyptologist and historian. A.L.S., H. R. Hall, one page, 8vo, London, 30th July 1930, to Howard Carter (´My dear Carter´), on the printed stationery of the Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum. Hall informs Carter that ´Sir Robert Witt has written to me to say that the Council of the National Art Collections Fund is interested in both pieces of sculpture, particularly the head of Rameses´ although adds that Witt ´feels bound to postpone any decision on the subject until the first meeting after the holidays, probably in October, by which time they would know better where they stood, in view of the purchase of the Bedford Book of Hours´. About EXRobert Witt (1872-1952) British art historian, a co-founder of the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and chairman of the National Art Collections Fund from 1921-45. Carter acted as a part-time dealer in Egyptian antiquities for both collectors and museums and the source of a number of items in his personal collection is shrouded in controversy. Over a dozen pieces he owned were identified after Carter's death as having been taken by the Egyptologist from Tutankhamun's tomb without authorisation.
PAHLAVI MOHAMMAD REZA: (1919-1980) Shah of the Imperial State of Iran 1941-79. A fine vintage signed and inscribed 7 x 9 photograph of the young, handsome Shah in a half-length pose wearing his ceremonial uniform and decorations. Signed at the foot of the image in fountain pen ink with a warm inscription to his wife, Princess Fawzia, in French, ‘Avec tout l’amour de mon Coeur……Fawzia, cherie, Mohammad Reza’, and dated 31st January 1942 in his hand. The inscription and signature partially run across a darker area of the image. A rare signed presentation photograph with an excellent association. Some very light, minor silvering to the upper edge and a few minimal traces of former mounting to the verso, VGFawzia Fuad of Egypt (1921-2013) Egyptian princess who became Queen of Iran (1941-48) as the first wife of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Pahlavi and Fawzia were engaged in May 1938, however the union was largely regarded as a political move and the couple only saw each other once before their wedding at the Abdeen Palace in Cairo on 15th March 1939. It was not a love-match and Fawzia obtained an Egyptian divorce in 1945, which was not recognised in Iran until three years later.
RILKE RAINER MARIA: (1875-1926) Austrian poet and novelist. A.L.S., R M Rilke, one page, 8vo, Venice, 10th August 1912, to [Axel] Juncker, in German. Rilke acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter and their cheque for DM 179.20 'for the annual accounts of Das B[uch] d[er] B[ilder]' and concludes by expressing his gratitude and sending his best regards. With blank integral leaf. About EXAxel Juncker (1870-1952) Danish bookseller and publisher who worked in both Germany and Denmark. Das Buch der Bilder ('The Book of Images') is a collection of Rilke's poetry from 1899 onwards and was first published by Juncker in 1902. It would be the last of Rilke's works that Juncker published, despite the two men enjoying a good relationship based on intellectual exchanges and meticulous typographic recommendations, before the poet moved to the Insel publishing house.
SHOCKLEY WILLIAM: (1910-1989) American inventor and physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1956. Signed First Day Cover issued as part of the Progress in Electronics series and commemorating 25 years of transistors, featuring images of Shockley and his colleagues Walter Brattain and John Bardeen. Post marked at New York, 10th July 1973. Signed by Shockley in blue ink to a clear area and with a schematic diagram of a transistor, with negative and positive charges, added above his signature. JOURDAN JEAN BAPTISTE: (1762-1833) Marshal of France. An excellent and very good content A.L.S., `Jourdan´, three pages, small 4to, Paris, 16th August 1799, to General Ernouf, in French. An interesting content letter where Jourdan alerts about the internal and external dangers that threaten the Homeland. Jourdan referring to the internal matters, states in part `La situation de Paris n´est pas rassurante, celle des départements ne l´est pas d´avantage. Partout le royalisme, aidé par ses auxiliaires les fripons, lève la tête avec audace. Déjà plusiuers départements sont en insurrection, et on peut prédire sans être fort habile, que la guerre civile va éclater sur toute la surface de la République. Que de maux menacent notre malheureuse patrie! Et cependant on s´occupe encore à comprimer ce qu´on appelle les Jacobins, et les anarchistes, on crée des conspirations anarchiques, et bientôt les hommes destitués du 30 Priarial vont être reconnus innocents, et ceux qui les ont déplacés considérés comme conspirateur´ (Translation: "The situation in Paris is not reassuring, nor is that of the departments any more. Everywhere royalism, aided by its auxiliaries the rascals, raises its head audaciously. Already several departments are in insurrection, and we can predict without being very clever, that civil war will break out across the entire surface of the Republic. Dans une circonstance aussi difficile je me trouve dans l´impossibilité de sauver ma patrie.... de manière que je me suis imposé silence afin de ne pas me trouver compris dans quelque conspiration fabriquée ad hoc pour perdre quelques républicains énergiques. Three months after the present letter was written, Napoleon Bonaparte executed his coup d´etat of 18th Brumaire, and although Jourdan was initially against the coup, he will soon support Bonaparte and will be appointed Marshal few years later. GOMES ANTONIO CARLOS: (1836-1896) Brazilian composer, a contemporary of Verdi and Puccini and the first New World composer whose work was accepted by Europe. Gomes was the only non-European who was successful as an opera composer in Italy during the ´golden age of opera´. Bergson, two pages, 8vo, Paris, 15th May 1938, on his personal printed stationery, 47 Boulevard Beauséjour, to Abel Hermant, in French. Bergson thanks his correspondent and friend for his kind article published referring to his essay Le Rire ("Laughter"), stating in part `Cher ami, ous avez fait un grand honneur à mon petit livre en le citant dans votre joli article. Il aura d´ailleurs servi la cause des bonnes lettres en vous fournissant l´occasion d´expliquer comment vous ne faites que votre devoir en donnant le signal du rire quand votre adversaire est risible. Il me semble surtout que c´est surtout par son obstination que l´erreur devient sottise´ (Translation: "Dear friend, you have done great honour to my little book by citing it in your lovely article. It will also have served the cause of the good letters by providing you with the opportunity to explain how you are only doing your duty by giving the signal to laugh when your opponent is laughable. MATA HARI: (1876-1917) Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. Dutch exotic dancer, courtesan and spy, executed by a firing squad in France during World War I. A.L.S., Mata-Hari, two pages (written to the first and final sides of the bifolium), 8vo, Paris, n.d. (1908), to the impresario [Nicol] Gerson, on the printed stationery of the Hotel Majestic, in French. The dancer sends her correspondent some photographs and advises ´Prenez en avec vous les meilleurs, faites comme vous voulez´ (Translation: ´Take the best ones with you, do as you like´), further remarking ´J´ai trouve votre lettre qui n´est pas si aimable que vous meme, mais j´espere que tout est en ordre et que vous partez quand meme Samedi. Faites avant tout Londres parceque je vois que c´est une grande affaire´ (Translation: ´I found your letter, which is not as kind as yourself, but I hope that everything is in order and that you are still leaving on Saturday. Do London first of all because I can see that it is a big affair´). Together with a good original vintage sepia unsigned 4 x 6.5 photograph of Mata Hari, the image depicting her standing in a full-length pose wearing her costume incorporating a see-through veil and with her outstretched arms raised. ZOLA EMILE: (1840-1902) French Writer. Nominated for the first and second award of the Nobel of literature in 1901 and 1902. A leading figure in the political liberalization of France. A very fine A.L.S., `Emile Zola´, two pages, 8vo, written to the first and third page, Paris, 10th February 1877, in French. Zola doesn´t want that his manuscript reaches Monaco too late, explaining `J´ai passé ce matin au Palais Royal, où l´on m´a dit que Plunkett était encore à Monaco. Seulement, on n´a pas voulu me dire si son retour est plus ou moins prochain. Tachez donc de me savoir immédiatement la chose. Je voudrais lui envoyer là-bas le manuscrit, mardi; mais il ne faudrait pas que le manuscrit se croisat avec lui´ (Translation: "I went this morning to the Palais Royal, where I was told that Plunkett was still in Monaco. Only, they didn't want to tell me if his return is more or less imminent. So try to let me know immediately. Send her the series, right? This will allow us to trade with her") VGLes Rougon-Macquart is the collective title given to a cycle of twenty novels by Zola. Subtitled "Histoire naturelle et sociale d'une famille sous le Second Empire" ("Natural and social history of a family under the Second Empire"), it follows the lives of the members of the two titular branches of a fictional family living during the Second French Empire and is one of the most prominent works of the French naturalism literary movement.
HOPKIN MARY: (1950- ) Welsh singer, remembered for her chart topping single Those Were the Days (1968). Hopkin was also one of the first artists to be signed to The Beatles' Apple label. JOHN PAUL II: (1920-2005) Pope of the Catholic Church 1978-2005, later canonised as Pope Saint John Paul II in 2014. D.S., `+ Karol Card. Wojtyla´, as Cardinal and Archbishop of Krakow, two pages, folio, Torun, 1973, in Polish. The attractive partially printed red and brown coloured document, is a diploma of participation in the Sacrosong music festival, issued to Father Placyda Galinskiego, a Benedictine Abbot from Tyniec. Signed by the future Pope in his capacity as President and Chairman of the festival and also featuring two other signatures. The second page of the document awards a distinction related to the text of Psalm 128 with music by Leonard Katarzynski and bears a further seven signatures of various unidentified individuals. DAVIS JEFFERSON: (1808-1889) American politician who served as the first and only President of the Confederate States 1861-65. A.L.S., Jefferson Davis, two pages, 8vo, London, 31st July 1874, to Rt. Revd. William Mercer Green. Davis forwards a letter (no longer present) which was written to Revd. Dr. Tremlett, explaining that his reason for sending the letter ´will be briefly stated, together with the facts of the case´, and continuing ´On my arrival at Liverpool on the 12th of June last an invitation from the Earl and Countess of Shrewsbury was handed to me, for a meeting to be held on the 14th June at their house in London. "Subject University Education in the ten southern Dioceses of the United States"´, adding that his former, agreeable acquaintance with Lord and Lady Shrewsbury ´would have sufficiently assured me of the character of a meeting to be held under their auspices, to consider the subject announced´, also informing Green that some business Davis had to attend to in Liverpool prevented him from being in London until after the date of the meeting and that he therefore sent a letter of regret to Lord and Lady Shrewsbury, and remarking ´Mr. Tremlett had written to me, asking me to attend that meeting, and enclosed a printed sheet explanatory of the special object for which it was to be held´. The letter does not conclude naturally at this point and, somewhat curiously, a portion of the third and fourth sides of the original bifolium would appear to have been neatly removed and the remaining lower third of the final pages (including the signature) neatly adhered to the second page in order to at least give the letter the physical appearance of just consisting of two pages. DONIZETTI GAETANO: (1797-1848) Italian Composer. A leading figure of the Bel CAnto during the first half of the nineteenth century. A good content and very good musical association letter, A.L.S., with his initials, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Mr. Geiger, in French. The letter bears to the upper left front page a crowned Bath blind embossed seal. To the address leaf Donizetti annotates `To Monsieur Geiger, famous Composer, to his home´. Donizetti refers to the male singers chosen for a performance he is organizing, and states `Mr Varesi, Mr. Gardoni , et Mr. Rovere (auquel il faut parler) chanteront le trio de Scaramuccia. Il faut donc trouver les parties pour les chanteurs et pour l´orchestre. J´ai prié Mr. Gardoni qui veut bien se prêter à chanter, pourvu que Merelli lui accorde la permission.´ (Translation: "Mr. Varesi, Mr. Gardoni. and Mr. Rovere (whom we need to talk to) will sing the Scaramuccia trio. We must therefore find the scores for the singers and for the orchestra. I have asked Mr. Gardoni who is willing to accept himself to sing, provided that Merelli grants him permission." Further, Donizetti asks his correspondent to choose an additional piece to perform, saying `Choisissez un duo pour tenor et baryton, ou bien pour bariton et basse. Indiquez-les nous tout de suite, et alors je me charge de le leur apprendre´ (Translation: "Choose a duet for tenor and baritone, or for baritone and bass. Tell us about them right away, and then I'll take care of teaching them.") A letter of very good association and musical content. With address leaf. Small overall minor creasing, otherwise G to VG Felice Varesi (1813-1889) French-born Italian Baritone. Specializing initially in the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Varesi created the role of Antonio in Donizetti's opera Linda di Chamounix (1842)Italo Gardoni (1821-1882) Italian leading operatic Tenor with major international career during the middle decades of the 19th century. Gardoni was one of the most celebrated Italian tenors of his era. His voice was not large but it was exceptionally pure toned and sweet, singing legato passages with impressive smoothness. In 1847 Gardoni went to London and during the last years of Donizetti´s life he sang most of the composer´s operas in London, including L´Elisir d´Amore, Lucrezia Borgia, Lucia di Lammermoor or Anna Bolena.Agostino Rovere (1804-1865) Italian operatic Bass. In 1839 he sang the role of Pedrigo in the world premiere of Donizetti´s Gianni di Parigi.Un'avventura di Scaramuccia (1834) is an opera bufa by Italian Poet and Librettist Felice Romani (1788-1865). Romani wrote many librettos for Bellini and Rossini, and also the Anna Bolena (1830), L´Elisir d´Amore (1832) and Lucrezia Borgia (1833) for Gaetano Donizetti.

[PEARL HARBOR]: BELLINGER PATRICK N.L.: (1885-1962) American Vice Admiral of World War II who, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, was responsible for sending the message ‘Air raid, Pearl Harbor. This is no drill’ which was the first notice to the outside world of the attack. A good fountain pen ink signature (´P.N.L. Bellinger, Vice Admiral, USN´) and inscription on an 8vo sheet of printed stationery from the Department of the Navy, General Board, Washington, dated 10th January 1947 in his hand. VG
EUGENIE DE MONTIJO: (1826-1920) Empress consort of the French 1853-70 as the wife of Emperor Napoleon III. A.L.S., Eugenie, four pages, 8vo, Camden Place, Chislehurst, 22nd February 1873, to [Monsieur Ray], on black bordered mourning stationery, in French. Eugenie writes a heartfelt letter in the month following her husband´s death, in part, ´Je vous remercie de m’avoir prouvé une fois de plus votre dévou[e]ment dans un moment où je ne puis trouver quelque consolation que dans les souvenirs et les regrets qui s’unissent aux miens pour retrouver encore au-dela de la mort celui que j´ai perdu! Je sais que les amis privés aujourd’hui de sa présence et de ses conseils, privés de l’appui de son grand coeur et de cet esprit si droit et si eleve qui savait si bien nous eclairer au milieu de l´obscurite et de la marche des evenements, repassent dans leur mémoire le souvenir de cette vie si remplie et de cette destinée si grande et si pleine d’enseignements. Puissions-nous ne jamais les oublier et rester fidèles à cette sagesse ui inspira et mesura tout dans sa vie. DALI GALA: (1894-1982) Russian artist´s model and muse, the wife of Paul Eluard and later of Salvador Dali. A rare A.L.S., Gala Eluard, to the verso of a decorative colour postcard with a pink perforated deckled edge and a quaint image of swallows flying over a country river applied to the centre, n.p. (Paris), n.d. (14th November 1930), to Valentine Hugo (´Chere Madame´), in French. Gala states that they very much regretted Hugo´s indisposition and her cancellation of Wednesday´s meeting, further remarking ´Voulez-vous me prevenir par un mot quel soir pourez vous venir diner chez moi (7 rue Becquerel) a partir du lundi prochain´ (Translation: ´Please let me know in writing which evening you can come to dinner at my house (7 rue Becquerel) from next Monday´) and concludes by sending ´Les amities de Dali´ (Translation: ´Best regards from Dali´). Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Gala. A wonderful letter of good association which also links Gala with the two most important men in her life, Eluard and Dali. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGValentine Hugo (1887-1968) French artist and writer associated with the French Surrealists. Valentine was the wife of French artist Jean-Victor Hugo (1894-1984), the great-grandson of novelist Victor Hugo.Gala´s letter is written at a very significant time in her life. Gala and the French poet Paul Eluard (1895-1952) had first met and fallen in love at the age of seventeen and were married a few years later in 1917. With Eluard, Gala became involved in the Surrealist movement and was an inspiration for many artists. In August 1929 Gala and Eluard travelled to Spain to meet the emerging Surrealist artist Salvador Dali. An affair quickly developed between Gala and Dali which soon led to the break-up of Gala´s marriage with Eluard (although the two would remain close). Gala married Dali in 1934, having lived together since 1929. The present letter, signed Gala Eluard, was written just over a year after Gala first met Dali, for whom she sends regards to Hugo.

A highly important historical and contemporary document from one of the most significant Post-World War II war crimes trials. BACARDI EMILIO: (1844-1922) Emilio Bacardi Moreau. Cuban Industrialist and Politician. Bacardi managed the Bacardi Rum Company and served as the first democratically elected Mayor of Santiago de Cuba. He was nicknamed "Cuba´s foremost son". T.L.S., Emilio Bacardi, signed twice, to both pages, two pages, 4to, Santiago de Cuba, 15th March 1902, on the Santiago de Cuba Town Hall printed stationery, to the Municipality Doctor Antonio Reyes Zamora, in Spanish. The typed letter states `Please go to Mr. Luis Artigas´ home and inform me about his health situation´. Signed by Bacardi in his capacity as Mayor of Santiago. Beneath his signature the document bears a four lines annotation in the hand of the doctor, explaining that Mr. Artigas was absent, and according to the neighbour he is fine now. At the base of the front page and to the verso bearing a second manuscript annotation in the hand of a Town Hall clerk, stating `According to the previous report, and considering that Mr. Artigas do not attend his office post for more than a month, we declare him unemployed until the Town Hall authority will resolve.´ Signed by Bacardi at the base a second time. Also bearing two Santiago Town Hall ink stamps. Paper with watermark showing a coat of arms above the word Cuba. Few very small tears to the bottom edge, with left edge trimmed with small pinholes as a result of former filing. G Emilio´s father, Facundo Bacardi, founded in 1862 the Bacardi Rum Company. Although Facundo went into bankruptcy, his elder son Emilio upon his return from Spain where he received literary and political instruction, started occupying an important role in the company. Over the 1870s to 1890s years Emilio became a business magnate as well as a subversive political activist. In 1877 he became President of the company which continued to grow under his leadership. Emilio Bacardi was repeatedly arrested and imprisoned for helping rebels and for his resistance against the Spanish Empire occupancy of Cuba. Emilio´s reputation distinguished him as an honest public server. The Bacardi company kept on growing into today´s International Corporation, Bacardi Limited.
LA VIE D´ADELE: Blue is the Warmest Colour (2013) is a French erotic romantic drama film which was awarded with the Palme d´Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. It is also the first film to have the Palme d'Or awarded to both the director and the lead actresses. Signed 10 x 8 photograph by Léa Seydoux (1985- ) French actress and Adele Exarchopoulos (1993- ) French actress, the first being well-known for her roles in Inglourious Bastards (2009), Midnight in Paris (2011) and Mission Impossible (2011). Individually signed by both actresses in bold and blue inks across the image, showing Seydoux and Exarchopoulos in a semi-nude sensual pose scene film. VG
CARRY ON: A good selection of signed 8 x 10 photographs by various actresses who appeared in different Carry On films, comprising Dilys Laye (four appearances; the original vintage publicity portrait depicting her in costume as Sue from the British comedy film Petticoat Pirates), Susan Stephen (one appearance; scarce), Juliet Mills (one appearance), June Whitfield (four appearances), Liz Fraser (four appearances) and Barbara Windsor (nine appearances; the image depicting her in costume as Daphne Honeybutt, codename Brown Cow, from Carry On Spying, marking her first appearance in the series). JAMES BOND: Selection of signed 8 x 10 photographs by various actresses, most of them Bond Girls, who starred in different James Bond films featuring Sean Connery, comprising Eunice Gayson (Sylvia Trench in both Dr. No and From Russia with Love, generally considered to be the first Bond Girl; photograph by Jack Emerald of London and bearing his blind embossed credit stamp to the lower right corner and a further credit stamp to the verso), Martine Beswick (Zora in From Russia with Love), Honor Blackman (Pussy Galore in Goldfinger), Luciana Paluzzi (Fiona Volpe in Thunderball) and Rose Alba (Madame Botier in Thunderball). GRIEG EDVARD: (1843-1907) Norwegian composer and pianist. A very fine AM.Q.S., Edvard Grieg, one page, oblong 12mo, 7 x 4, n.p., dated 31st May 1892 in his hand. Gried has cleanly penned a four bars of music, which he entitles to the heading `Strygekvartet op.27´, which corresponds to his string Quartet nº 1, in G minor (1877-78). Grieg also adds the musical tempo above the quotation `Presto´. Very small ninor remnants of former afficxing to the verso, otherwsie, VG The String Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 27, is the second of three string quartets written by the composer. The first, in D minor, was an early work, now lost, written in the early 1860s at the request of his teacher, Carl Reinecke, while the third quartet, in F major, remained incomplete at the composer's death.
CHOMSKY NOAM: (1928- ) American professor and public intellectual, known for his work in linguistics and sometimes referred to as ´the father of modern linguistics´. Small selection of three T.Ls.S., Noam Chomsky, each one page (folding air mail stationery), 8vo and slim 4to, Cambridge, Massachusetts, December 1978 - August 1979, all to Stephen Brook. In the first letter Chomsky declines a publishing project owing to his travel plans, ´I´m afraid things will be extremely hectic. I´d rather not make any arrangements for that time, in anticipation of impending disaster´ (14th December 1978), in the second letter stating, in part, ´You asked about the possibility of co-publishing forthcoming work of mine in linguistics. I´d be quite happy to see such an arrangement, though in the past I have always left the matter of foreign publication to the publishers themselves. At the moment, I have a book in press (Rules and Respresentations......I have no idea what, if any, arrangement they may have made for overseas publication and distribution). While I was in Italy I worked out most of the material for another book, a rather technical linguistics monograph that will be based on lectures that I gave in Pisa, probably more or less in the format of lectures. I´ve arranged for publication of that book with a Dutch publisher. Foris publications, which has inaugurated a very good linguistic series. I have plans, in fact contracts, with several other publishers for both technical and more popular books, so as you can see, I´m pretty well programmed - too well for my taste - for the next several years´ (30th June 1979), and in the third letter also briefly referring to current contracts he has for two books with American publishers, remarking ´Each is only in the planning stage, I am afraid, and I have no idea when they will be completed´ (6th August 1979). BELLONTE MAURICE: (1896-1983) French pioneer aviator who, with Dieudonne Costes, completed the first westbound crossing of the North Atlantic from Paris to New York, September 1930. Autograph draft of a letter, unsigned, one page, 4to, n.p., 6th August 1937, to Louis Couhe, in French. The retained draft is written on feint squared graph paper and contains various corrections, stating that he is forwarding a copy of a letter which he had sent to the Minister for Air and further remarking ´Je profite de l´occasion pour vous remercier de la lettre me concernant que vous avez recemment adressee a Monsieur [Jean] Moulin et du point de vue que vous y avez expose a mon egard´ (Translation: ´I take this opportunity to thank you for the letter concerning me that you recently sent to Mr [Jean] Moulin and for the point of view you expressed about me in it´). Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGLouis Couhe (1889-1979) French politician who flew as a Lieutenant during World War I and later served as Secretary General of the Air Ministry as well as Director of Air France Transatlantique. Jean Moulin (1899-1943) French civil servant who served as the first President of the National Council of the Resistance during World War II and is remembered as one of the main heroes of the French Resistance. At the time of the present letter Moulin was employed at the Air Ministry under Pierre Cot.
MACDONALD JAMES RAMSAY: (1866-1937) British Prime Minister 1924, 1929-35. An excellent T.L.S., J. Ramsay MacDonald, two pages, 4to, The Hillocks, Lossiemouth (although on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall), 30th December 1931, to Ernest J. Titler of the Shaftesbury Advertising Agency Ltd., marked Private & Confidential. MacDonald states ´The paragraphs that have been appearing in the newspapers, especially in the "Daily Herald", that I am trying to go back to the Labour Party, and have appointed emissaries to make soundings, are rather embarrassing and untrue. They have been repeated, however, in a tone which indicates that the writers have got something in their minds´, and continues ´If I were clear of my immediate burdens I should show them that in spite of their excommunications I am a member of the Labour movement, and would defy them and all their caucuses to turn me out of it. But what I should do would be to try to get the movement back to its proper position, and rescue it from being a glorified board of guardians´, before concluding ´The Labour Party has been misled, and is being kept misinformed by two of the most disreputable papers now published, the Herald and Reynolds. That is what I want to rectify in the interests of the whole movement´. Accompanied by the original envelope. A letter of fine political content. Together with a second, earlier T.L.S., J. Ramsay MacDonald, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 11th March 1931, also to Ernest J. Titler, on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister. MacDonald states that he has received the programme for Titler´s concert, and wishes that he could attend, however explaining ´....the House of Commons will be sitting that evening and Government business taken, and no doubt there will be Divisions. I am afraid it would be impossible for me to leave the ship in those circumstances.....´. Also including Ishbel MacDonald (1903-1982) eldest daughter of Ramsay MacDonald and the hostess of 10 Downing Street during her father´s time in office. A.L.S., Ishbel, one page, 4to, Upper Frognal Lodge, Hampstead, London, 17th November 1937, to Ernest [Titler], on black bordered mourning stationery. Writing shortly after the death of her father, MacDonald thanks her correspondent for their kind letter and messages of sympathy and continues ´If you and your mother or father would like to go to the Abbey get in touch with Alister [her brother].....or just chance it. The Abbey will be open to the public´, accompanied by a second A.L.S.. Ishbel, two pages, 4to, Upper Frognal Lodge, Hampstead, London, 19th November 1937, also to Titler and on black bordered mourning stationery, stating that she had written her previous letter too soon and explaining ´Since making our first list we have been told that it is too long, and we have had to cut it right down to little more than relatives. The National Labour executive is being asked with official people, and everyone else has to take their chance. The greater part of the Abbey will be unreserved seats, so you are not cut out, but you will see that it is not possible for us to reserve seats......I am terribly sorry.....Do forgive me´. Accompanied by the original envelope. Further including an interesting, small group of printed ephemera and letters (2) relating to Ramsay MacDonald and his family, including T.Ls.S. by MacDonald´s private secretary Rose Rosenberg, and Parliamentary Private Secretary Frank Markham, two official unsigned 10 Downing Street Christmas greetings cards from Ramsay MacDonald, 1933/34 and 1934/35, a printed National Labour Committee menu for a luncheon to meet Ramsay MacDonald, Stanley Baldwin and John Simon at the Trocadero Restaurant in London on 6th November 1933, two pieces relating to the marriage of Joan Margaret MacDonald with a reception at Chequers, 20th September 1932, etc. Some light age wear and minor faults, G to generally VG, 13
BAILLY JEAN SYLVAIN: (1736-1793) French Mathematician, Astronomer and the first Mayor of the city of Paris. Bailly was guillotined for his participation in the Champ de Mars massacre. A rare and very clean A.L.S., Bailly, one page, 8vo, Chaillot, Paris, 3rd May 1788, to Monsieur Guillaumot, in French. Bailly addresses the present letter to Guillaumot, architect and intendant in charge of the King´s buildings and states in part `Vous m'avez fait l'honneur de me mander, Monsieur, qu'à la fin d'avril, vous seriez en état de nous donner une réponse positive sur Ste Anne. On m'assure que vous êtes maintenant sûr qu'on peut faire usage de ce terrain en disposant les bâtiments sur les parties reconnues pour bonnes ou solides, je prends la liberté de vous demander la confirmation de cette bonne nouvelle. Si elle est vraie, comme je le crois, nous pourrons avoir incessamment le plaisir d'y voir les ouvriers…´("You made me the honour of telling me, Sir, that at the end of April you would be in a position to give us a positive answer on St Anne. I am assured that you are now sure that we can make use of this land by situating the buildings on the parts which are recognized as good or solid, I take the liberty of asking you for confirmation of this good new. Signed First Day Cover by Mother Teresa featuring four different images of the nun as well as a postage stamp and cancellation with her image. Post marked at Trivandrum, 27th August 1980. SOUPHANOUVONG: (1909-1995) Laotian Prince who served as the first President of Laos 1975-86. A scarce blue ink signature on an oblong 12mo card (15.5 x 8 cm) with a greeting in his hand in French, ´Amicales salutations et meilleurs voeux au Peuple Suisse´ (Translation: ´Best wishes to the people of Switzerland´), further adding his name in both Laotian and European characters beneath, and also dated June 1961 in his hand. DICK PHILIP K.: (1928-1982) American science fiction writer whose novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968) was adapted for the cult movie Blade Runner (1982). An interesting T.L.S., Love, Phil, one page, 4to, n.p. (Santa Barbara, California), 15th April 1981, to Professor Patricia Warrick. Dick forwards an enclosure (still present) ´of what may be a resolution of my seven years of attempting to construct a model of reality´, adding that the solution came to him in a series of recent sleep revelations ´where I actually saw how the system works´, and further explaining ´My model is that of a computer-like entity....it relates both to Taoism and to computers. This may be it, Pat. Initially I had a vision of reality as a rapid procession of static, discrete frames replacing each other at enormous velocity; we turn these frames - - each of which is unique, slightly different from the one before it and the one following it - - into a continuous flow by means of the modem we call causality. But in fact "causality" is illusory; our minds project it onto the procession of discrete frames in order to connect them into a flow. This is a necessary modem, for otherwise we will not be able to discern the constants (eide, Forms) within the procession of frames; all would be chaotic flux to us, without the modem of causality. The system is thinking, but it thinks (as I say on the enclosed page) during its off or non-being void phase of the binary pulse-flicker, so we´re totally unaware of it thinking, Our reality is shot full of information, both quantitative (bits) and qualitative (constructed/converted out of the bits). (Santa Barbara, California), 15th April 1981, in which the author expands on the theories outlined in his letter, also making reference to Jakob Boehme, Charles Hartshorne and Alfred Whitehead, stating that ´the Muslims are correct; the universe is destroyed "every day" (actually every trillionth of a second) and "re-created"´ and concluding ´So my envisioning is essentially Boehme´s, updated in terms of computers and information-processing systems. RENOIR PIERRE-AUGUSTE: (1841-1919) French Impressionist Artist. A fine and good association A.L.S., `Renoir´, two pages, written to the first and third page, small 8vo, Cagne, 8th January 1908, to Claude Monet, in French. Renoir writes to his long life friend Monet `Mon cher ami…´ ("My deaf friend…"), and first asks about his correspondent´s health `Tu me diras si tu as toujours mal à l´estomac, c´est une maladie qui rend triste, il faut vite guérir´ ("Tell me if you still have a stomach ache, it's a disease that makes you sad, you have to heal quickly") Renoir further refers to Vollard, their art collector supporter, stating `Vollard est ici, je le portraiterai´ ("Vollard is here, I will make a portrait of him") Further again Renoir thanks Monet and his daughters for the letters they often send him, and before concluding makes a sharp critic of a colleague´s exhibition, stating `Une pièce que je n´irai certainement pas voir c´est celle de Geoffroy à l´Odéon…´ ("A painting that I will certainly not go to see is the one of Geoffoy at the Odeon") To a post-scriptum Renoir referring to the new year 1908, states `Ce 8 me fait bien vieillir´ ("This 8 makes me feel older") VG Claude Monet (1840-1926) French Impressionist Painter.Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939) French art Dealer. One of the most important dealers of his time in French contemporary art. [DREYFUS AFFAIR]: MORNARD HENRY (1859-1928) French lawyer who first represented Lucie Dreyfus in 1894 and later for Alfred Dreyfus at the retrial in Rennes in September 1899. A.L.S., with his initials H. M., to the recto and verso of his personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card, featuring his printed name to the centre, as a Doctor of Law and Lawyer at the Council of State and the Court of Cassation, and with his address at Boulevard Raspail (Paris) to the base, n.d., to [Fernand Labori], in French. Mornard writes, in full, ´Je suis heureux de vous feliciter mon cher ami, non pas de votre reelection qui n´etait pas douteuse, mais de la belle manifestation de sympathie qu´elle a constituee a votre egard. Je ne suis pas votre electeur...mais je vote tout de meme de tout coeur pour le batonnier Labori´ (Translation: ´I am delighted to congratulate you, my dear friend, not on your re-election, which was not in doubt, but on the wonderful show of sympathy it has given you. I am not your elector... but I am nevertheless voting wholeheartedly for President Labori´). An excellent association piece between the two principal defenders of Alfred Dreyfus. PIRANDELLO LUIGI: (1867-1936) Italian Dramatist & Novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1934. A scarce A.L.S., `Luigi Pirandello´, two pages, written to first and third page, 8vo, `Da casa´ ("from home"), 5th September 1897, to Ugo Ojetti, in Italian. Pirandello explains in detail his frustrating visit attempt to his correspondent´, stating in part `Caro Ugo, oggi sono andato su cerca del tuo indirizzo; so che abiti in via Bocca di Leone; non so il numero. Sono andato al Ministro della P.J- per farmelo dire, dal Palinarini: non l´ho trovato. Ho trovato il Flores, che e piu ignorante di me (nel senzo che anche lui ignora il numero della tua casa)... Mando peró questa mia lettera a farte visita in vece mia...´ (Translation: "Dear Ugo, today I went to search for your address; I know you live in via Bocca di Leone; I don't know the number. I went to the Minister of P.J to have Palinarini tell me: I didn't find him. I found Flores, who is more ignorant than me (in the sense that he also doesn't know your house number)... However, I am sending this letter of mine to visit you on my behalf...") VGUgo Ojetti (1871-1946) Italian Journalist, art Critic and Author. He wrote prolifically on a wide range of topics, including short stories and at least seven novels. Widely admired for his mastery of language. Some of Ojetti’s output was published pseudonymously. His most frequently employed pseudonym, notably during the first decade of the twentieth century, was “Conte Ottavio” ("Count Octavian")
MONETA ERNESTO TEODORO: (1833-1918) Italian journalist and nationalist, Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1907. A.L.S., E T Moneta, two pages (written to the first and final sides of the bifolium), Milan, 11th January 1904, to a colleague and friend (Monsieur Gaillard, a member of the French Society for arbitration between nations), on the printed stationery of Societa Internazionale per la Pace, in French. Moneta sends his warmest congratulations to his correspondent on the conclusion of the Franco-English and Franco-Italian arbitration treaties and continues ´Je suis profondement touche de l´honneur d´etre mis par votre bienveillante courtoisie, avec MM D´Estournelles et Barclay. Je fairai de mon mieux pour etre avec les amis et camarades de France le 22 fevrier. Mais vous comprenez que je ne peux pas de maintenant prendre un engagement definitif´ (Translation: ´I am deeply touched by the honour of being placed, by your kind courtesy, with Messrs D'Estournelles and Barclay. I shall do my best to be with my friends and comrades in France on 22 February. But you understand that I cannot now make a definite commitment´) and concludes by sending his thanks and deepest gratitude to his correspondent and Monsieur Passy. Signed by Andress in bold, dark blue fountain pen ink with her name alone to a light area at the base of the image. Best known for his first film Reservoir Dogs (1992), widely considered ''The Greatest Independent Film of All Time'', and for his second film Pulp Fiction (1994) a major success among critics and audiences which has become a cult film.Signed 8 x 10 colour photograph by Tarantino, the image depicting him standing in a half-length pose. LANCASTER BURT: (1913-1994) American actor, Academy Award winner. A printed large 4to menu for a first class transatlantic Trans World Airlines flight, incorporating details of the in flight Duty Free shop, n.d. (c.1970s), signed and inscribed by Lancaster to a light area of the colour printed front cover, featuring an image of a TWA aeroplane in flight. LAGERLOF SELMA: (1858-1940) Swedish writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1909 (thereby becoming the first female recipient of the award). Vintage signed postcard photograph, the vignette image depicting Lagerlof in a half-length pose. Signed in fountain pen ink with her name alone to a clear area beneath the image. VG
WELLS H.G.: (1866-1946) English writer, remembered for his science fiction novels. A good A.L.S., H. G. Wells, one page, small 4to, Easton Glebe, Dunmow, n.d. (annotated 1916 in another hand at the head), to Huntly Carter. Wells writes in response to Carter's letter in which the journalist had posed some questions to Wells, asking what his opinion of the industrial situation regarding Labour, capital and the nation as a commercial entity was, as well as the best policies to be followed. Wells answers by stating, in part, '1a Labour will be after some fool's grievance about the C[onscience] O[bjectors] or suchlike, under the guidance of Fenner Brockway, Ramsay MacDonald & so forth......Labour will be unaware that there is an economic problem. Labour will be sheep in a narrow road. 1b. Capital will be scrambling back towards the old conditions in a stupid instinctive way under cover of an Irish row. 1c. Nonsense! Do you mean economic? 2a. 2b. 2c. Think hard. But this is Utopian'.
