Lot 514

*OSCAR NEMON (1906-1985) Sir Winston Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, DL, FRS, RA (1874-1965) A bronze 'maquette' for the statue now in situ in the Members' Lobby of the Palace of Westminster signed 'Nemon' but un-numbered, indicating that this is the preliminary version and a one-off cast by the Morris Singer Foundry59cm highProvenance: Acquired directly from Oscar Nemon by Sir John Langford-Holt (1916-1993) a British Conservative Member of Parliament for Shrewsbury from 1945 to 1983. Sir John Langford-Holt was a prominent member of the committee that commissioned Oscar Nemon’s enduring tribute to Churchill. During Winston Churchill’s later years, he was entrusted by the Tory Whips to look after the grand old man himself. Acquired directly from John-Langford-Holt by Sir Edward du Cann (1924-2017) a Tory party grandee and the only person to have served as both Chairman of the Conservative Party and as Chairman of the influential 1922 Committee. Following the defeat of Edward Heath’s Conservative Party in the October 1974 general election, du Cann was briefly touted as a successor as Party leader. Although flattered, he decided not to stand, instead throwing his weight behind the little-known former Education Minister, Margaret Thatcher. His natural bonhomie, as much as the influence he wielded through the 1922 Committee, was decisive and Thatcher was elected as leader of the party in February 1975, paving the way to become the first female Prime Minister in British history. Thence by descent in the family of Sir Edward du CannOscar Nemon had first met Churchill on a trip to Marrakesh, where he had travelled to visit a friend. In an unpublished memoir, Nemon recalls how he first encountered Churchill at the dining room of the hotel in which he was staying. Afraid of approaching him, Nemon studied the hero of the Second World War from across the room, making mental notes so that he could work on a small bust in his room. When Clementine Churchill, Winston’s wife, was alerted to this, she had the artist send the bust over to their party; she found the result so impressive that she wrote to the artist asking to keep it. It should not, she requested, be altered as she had “seen so many portraits and busts spoilt by attempting to get an exact likeness. Your bust represents to me my husband as I see him and as I think of him, and I would like to have it just as it is”.This was to be the first of many sittings that Churchill made to Nemon. Beginning informally in Marrakesh, with studies made by Nemon as Churchill painted, these were then picked up again more formally in Britain from 1952, serving as the basis for a number of public commissions. Churchill was not an easy subject. He could be, in Nemon’s words, ‘bellicose, challenging, and deliberately provocative’, which meant that Nemon would often approach sittings with great trepidation. But, as a fellow artist, Nemon and Churchill had a rapport that went beyond the conventional relationship between sitter and artist, with Nemon teaching Churchill how to sculpt, which he practised by making a portrait bust of the artist at his house in Chartwell, Kent, the only known example of a sculpture by Churchill. After Churchill’s death in 1965 there were calls for a parliamentary memorial to the former Prime Minister to stand alongside Uli Nimptsch’s study of David Lloyd George at the entrance of the House of Commons. Nemon was commissioned to produce a large bronze statue for Parliament. Nemon’s sculpture shows Churchill with his hands on his hips, striding through rubble which evokes the devastation across Britain in the wake of the Second World War.It is understood that the bronze offered here was the version shown to the Committee established to oversee the commissioning and installation of the statue of Churchill. A scale model was discussed in the House of Commons on Monday 20th June 1966, with the then Minister of Public Building and Works Reg Prentice stating that “A scale model of the statue has been seen by most members of the Memorial Committee and by Lady Spencer Churchill. All were favourably impressed. I have seen and approved the model which will now be used by the sculptor, Mr. Oscar Nemon, as the basis for the development of a full scale model.”

Lot 481

A George III 18th century silver drum teapot, mark of Walter Brind, London 1773, circular in cross-section, the side engraved with the arms of HARDCASTLE, bright cut foliate border to the rim, part marked lift off cover similarly decorated and topped with a wooden finial, wooden handle and straight spout, 10cm diameter at the base, 8.5cm high, 12.6oztDuring the 18th century, tea was a popular drink in Britain, but its price was out of reach to most people. The government classed tea as a 'Tropical Luxury', which allowed them to levy high duties on it. Tea tax in the mid 1700s was over 100%, and it was not until 1784 when tea was reclassed as a ‘necessity’ that the tax was reduced to 12.5% and tea drinking became popular again.During the time of heavy taxation (and despite large quantities of tea being smuggled into Britain) teapots generally became smaller, and silver varieties were less common. The small drum style - this example - was only fashionable for a short period of time between around 1760-1780, when the oval shapes gained popularity. The oval styles were larger, too, reflecting the new lower price of tea. The 18th century silver drum teapot is now quite a rare and sought after item. This teapot was probably the property of Joseph Hardcastle (1752 - 1819), of Hatcham House, Deptford, Surrey. Joseph married Anne Corsbie at the Parish Church of St Mary, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on the 17th February 1778. Although Joseph joined in business with his uncle, Nathaniel Hardcastle, as a Russian Merchant in the City of London in 1765, he was one of the founders of the Missionary Society, which later became known as the London Missionary Society, and was their first treasurer.Overall in fair to good condition with no obvious sign of repair. Some surface scratches and minor bruises, as to be expected and commensurate with use. Some bruising and minor dents to the spout. Handle firm in the sockets. Bruise to the bottom rim. Underside a little dished. Some spotting to the side. Locating rim to the cover misshaped, dented and bruised, but the cover is still a good fit. Some loss and damage to the finial.

A pair of George III 18th century silver waiters, mark of Richard Rugg, London 1760, each with decorative cast foliate rim, the field engraved with the arms of CLIVE impaling MASKELYNE, raised on three cast foliate feet, 20cm diameter, underside with scratch weight, 35.6ozt gross Provenance: From the estate of the late Barry Lock (1934-2021)These armorial bearings commemorate the marriage of Robert Clive, the 1st Baron Clive (1725 - 1774) and Margaret Maskelyne (1735 - 1817). Robert and Margaret were married at St Mary’s Church, Madras, India on 18th February 1753. Robert was the eldest son of Richard Clive, of Styche Hall, near Market Drayton, Shropshire and his wife, Rebecca Gaskell, whilst Margaret was the only daughter of Edmund Maskelyne, of Purton, Wiltshire and his wife, Elizabeth Booth. After the marriage they returned to England, and Clive was elected briefly as a Member of Parliament, but was unseated on petition by the defeated candidates. He returned to India in July 1755, working for the East India Company, and established the Company’s rule in Bengal after victory at the Battle of Plassey in 1757. He became the first British Governor of the Presidency of Fort George (otherwise known as the Bengal Presidency) in 1757, a post he held until 1760. During this time, he amassed a great fortune of £180,000 (around £25,700,000 today). On his return to England, he obtained an Irish peerage as Baron Clive of Plassey, County Clare. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Shrewsbury in 1761, a seat he held until his death, and was also elected as the Mayor of Shrewsbury for the year 1762 – 63. He was appointed a Knight of the Bath (KB) in 1764.In 1765, Clive was asked by the East India Company to return to India to rectify the maladministration of the Company’s affairs there since his absence. He developed a strong administration led by civil servants that reduced corruption, and also set about a reorganisation of the army. At that time, the Bengal Army was a private army of the Bengal Presidency owned by the East India Company and as a result, Robert Clive became the Commander-in-Chief of all British forces in India, earning the nickname 'Clive of India'.He retired and left India in 1769, briefly settling in the South of France, before acquiring his country house and estate, Claremont, near Esher, Surrey. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and served as the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire (1772 –74) and Montgomeryshire (1773 -74).

SIMMONS 7 ST ANNE'S SQ MANCHESTER (case A/F)Provenance: From the estate of the late Barry Lock (1934-2021)Given the date of hallmarking, the decorations and embellishments, on the balance of probability and without any evidence to the contrary this set may well have been a presentation piece to H.R.H. Prince Albert, the Prince Consort on the occasion of his visit to Liverpool for the official opening of the Royal Albert Dock - named in his honour, on 30th July 1846. This was the first time that a member of the Royal Family had made an official visit to Liverpool and there were major celebrations to mark the occasion, including a lavish party at which Prince Albert was guest of honour. The hypothesis is that the Prince Consort undoubtedly received many gifts at that time and this personalised knife and fork may have been used and subsequently gifted to him on the day.Chawner and Company were suppliers of silverware to Garrard & Company who, in turn, were appointed official Crown jewellers in 1843. During the mid 19th century, Garrard were one of the leading producers of elaborate presentation silverware, such as this example. The silver blade has subsequently been replaced (the original might well have been steel), probably by the retailer, who was active circa 1860 - circa 1905, and the fitted case was possibly made at that time.
