Barker, who made a living as an angling tutor, suggested that ‘fishing far surpasses all other recreations in promoting health and pleasure. The text offers much hard practical advice on fish species, tackle and bait, together with recipes, including pike with stewed oysters, and employs a successful formula for angling writing which has been much copied subsequently’ (ODNB).

The English botanist and fern specialist Thomas Moore (1821-87) published various botanical and garden journals and was curator of the Apothecaries' Company's Garden at Chelsea from 1848 (later renamed the Chelsea Physic Garden in 1875). The Viennese A. Auer had claimed the discovery of self-printing for himself, but 100 years earlier the Dane P. Kyhl described this method for the first time, while individual examples are known in Europe found in early 15th century manuscripts. H. Bradbury learnt the process in the Vienna State Printing Office and protected the process as his own. Bradbury's detailed works are among the most beautiful of this elaborate, unusually lifelike and rare technique. "This magnificent work shows the plants, often with the roots, in various stages of development, so that the 51 plates contain 240 individual representations that were printed in the natural colours. 102 whole plants and 1387 branches are shown, the latter including broken ones which measure up to 85 cm when unfolded." (Fischer).

His main residence was Menabilly, situated between Fowey and St. Austell. The latter was an important centre for China clay mining and Rashleigh was ideally placed to pursue his interest in geology, forming one of the most distinguished early collections of minerals. Of particular note are his unsurpassed examples of Cornish minerals, which are meticulously detailed in the present work, and which secured his election as F.S.A. and F.R.S. in 1788. Many of Rashleigh's specimens were used by the Sowerby family in their publications. The collection is now in the Natural History Museum in London.

'During much of the 1690s Ray was engaged in correspondence with Edward Lhwyd and others about the nature of fossils. In general he was inclined to accept that they were the remains of once-living creatures, and he also suggested that their current distribution might owe something to observable changes in the nature of the surface of the earth. He qualified these opinions, however, by stressing that the fossils which had so far been discovered were not unlike known plants and animals, and that their burial might owe something to the action of the biblical flood, as well as to natural effects. He argued that those remains which seemed to be unfamiliar might represent species of which the surviving representatives had not yet been discovered' (ONDB).
