The original artwork for the 1908 London Olympic Games gold medal winner’s diploma by the artist Sir (John) Bernard Partridge (1861-1945), signed & dated 1908 in Roman numerals lower right, additionally signed by Lord Desborough (President of the British Olympic Council), mixed media drawing, framed & glazed The official report for the 1908 London Olympic Games includes a passage about Bernard Partridge's work in designing the prize medals and the prize winner's Olympic diploma. ''In addition to his design for medals, Diplomas of two kinds were also designed by Mr. Bernard Partridge for the Council, and are reproduced in this Report. The first design, for prize-winners only, representing a winged Victory between the figures of Hellas and Britannia, was exhibited in the Royal Academy, and was awarded in its larger form to winners of gold medals, and in a slightly smaller form to winners of silver and bronze medals. Each winner of a gold medal also received the smaller form of this diploma for presentation to his Club or Association as a memorial of his success. The second design, representing Victory seated, was worked out in black and red, and formed a Diploma of Merit, which was awarded by the various Associations controlling each series of events in the Games to athletes who achieved a high standard of excellence without getting first, second, or third in their competition. In a certain number of restricted cases this diploma was also awarded to officials and other for services rendered to the British Olympic Council in the organisation of the Games. It was thought right not to confuse the design in either class of medal by too long an inscription, so the event for which each prize-medal was awarded was incised upon the edge of its rim, with sufficient space left for the addition of the winner's name. The same inscription was placed on the box containing each medal. The 250 gold medals ordered by the Council were placed in red boxes, 260 silver in dark blue boxes, and 260 bronze in yellow boxes. The large diplomas accompanying gold medals were rolled up in tubes, 20 1/2 inches long, of red, and the club diplomas were placed in deep crimson tubes, 18 1/2 inches in length. Dark blue and yellow tubes (also 18 1/2 inches long) were provided für second and third prize diplomas respectively. The diplomas of merit (of which 500 were ordered) were placed in light blue tubes, 17 inches long. The Commemorative Medals, being larger than the prize medals, were easily distinguishable, apart from the use of various coloured boxes for each class of these awards.''

David Lloyd six various Lancashire Schools/Federation, England schools and Derrick Robins captwo blue, one white, one black, one white, green and orange and red and orange inscribed OT, (Old Trafford) (6)The following Lots 187 to 221 relate to the cricket career of David "Bumble" LloydProvenance: David Lloyd David "Bumble" LloydThe David Lloyd CollectionAffectionately known throughout the world of sport as “Bumble”, David was born is Accrington in 1947 and his famed for his long career as a cricketer, umpire, coach, commentator and semi-professional footballer through an incredible career. The left-handed batsman and spin bowler played his maiden first team match for Lancashire in 1965, going on to play 407 First Class matches and 288 one day games, amassing nearly 27,000 runs and talking 276 wickets in an incredible career for both county and country, taking 423 catches whilst boasting a batting average of 33.33 in all first class games and a bowling average of 30.26- he is what you would describe as the absolute epitome of an all rounder in the game, as well as being renowned as one of its great characters. A part of the great Lancs. side of the 1970’s, he collected three consecutive Gillette Cup Winners medals in 1970, 71 and 72 with victories over Sussex, Kent and Warwickshire, adding a fourth in 1975 after returning injured from England’s Australian tour of that year, scoring over a 1000 runs in each of the first three seasons, and Graham Budd Auctions are delighted to offer the medals for sale as part of the collection.Lloyd was made Captain in 1973, standing down in 1977, and was rewarded a then record-breaking benefit year for his fine service in 1978.He took his England bow in in 1973 against the West Indies at the Oval and played his last one day game at Headingly in May 1980 and, following his retirement from the game he spent a number of years as a first class umpire before embarking on a career in coaching with his beloved Lancashire as Head Coach in 1993, guiding them to their third Benson and Hedges title before taking the same role with England in 1996, guiding the country to their first victory in a five match test series since 1986/7 and was credited with introducing many game changing innovations that had a profound effect on the International game. He stood down after the 1999 World Cup.From then he became the face and, indeed voice of Cricket for Sky TV. Famed for his knowledge of the game and, of course, his humour, his catch phrases, such as “Start the Car” caught the imagination of the viewers and became the title of his bestselling second autobiography.A lifelong supporter of Accrington Stanley, a team he also played for in the 1960’s, he even spent a period as a member of the Board, and was a constant face on the terraces to watch the game he confesses has always been his first love, and as tribute he had a street named after him near to both cricket and football clubs in the town in 2021. There are some superb mementos of an incredible career to be offered for sale by Graham Budd Auctions, made even better by the fact that our valuers have had the privilege of being able to discuss each piece in depth with the great man himself, and we can testify that the stories and the character behind them add real value to the trophies of a truly wonderful and far reaching career in the game that he has given so much to.

Argentina won the 2022 World Cup champions for the third time after beating France on penalties in the breathtaking final in Qatar. Gonzalo Montiel scored the winning spot-kick to give the South Americans a 4-2 victory in the shoot-out, after a frenetic game ended 3-3 after extra time. Lionel Messi scored twice and Angel di Maria netted for the Argentines, while France's Kylian Mbappe became the first player since Geoff Hurst in 1966 to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final. Argentina eventually triumphed to seal their third world title, with Messi crowning an extraordinary career by lifting the golden trophy at Lusail Stadium. The Argentinians started the final were out of the traps early and were awarded a penalty in the 23rd minute when Dembele fouled Angel di Maria. Lionel Messi taking the subsequent spot kick which he converted to give his country the lead. In the 36th minute Argentina doubled their advantage Di Maria completing a swift counter-attack and knocking the ball past Hugo Lloris. What appeared to be a one-sided final burst into life in the 67th minute, Kylian Mbappe gave France hope from the penalty spot after Nicolas Otamendi fouled Kol Muani. With a spring in their step France and the inspirational Mbappe slammed a volley past Emi Martinez to make it 2-2. The striker's first two goals were separated by just 97 seconds. The final ended 2-2 after 90 minutes forcing the final into extra time, and again it appeared Messi had won it for Argentina when he forced the ball over the line. However, France, and the Parisen, Mbappe, were not finished yet! An outstretched Argentinian arm blocked a shot in the penalty box, so up stepped the P.S.G. star to make it 3-3 and with that goal became the first player since Sir Geoff Hurst to score a World Cup final hat-trick. After 120 minutes the first-ever Winter World Cup final came down to a penalty shootout. Mbappe and Messi took the first penalties and both scoring. France's Kingsley Coman attempt was saved by Emiliano Martinez and France were left up against it when their third taker, Aurelien Tchouameni, put his penalty wide. Gonzalo Montiel, a 90th-minute substitute strolled up to the box to take the decisive penalty and sent Lloris the wrong way to seal a 4-2 shoot-out win.

Elected in 1897 and retired fifty years later, he was also Secretary of Division 3 for one season, then clerk to the Association, before becoming its first paid Secretary in 1903. The job of secretary to an Association as large as the London F.A. had clearly become too onerous to be undertaken on a part-time basis and the inevitable step of appointing a full time secretary was taken. He was also a member of the Council of The Football Association for forty three years, during which time he was made a Life member. Kirkup was also one of the three founders of the Isthmian League which, when officially formed on March 8th 1905, appointed Harry Huband secretary and Lord Kinnaird president.

The following lots 902 to 943 relate to the career of Huddersfield Town Legend and England International Tom Wilson. PROVENANCE: Tom Wilson thence by family descentTom WilsonHuddersfield Town 1919-31 Few players outrank Tom Wilson in the Huddersfield Town hall of fame. As a key player in three times Division 1 Championship winning teams, as well as during numerous FA Cup campaigns, Tom’s consistency at the heart of Town’s defence during the glory years of the 1920’s was exceptional and indispensable and established him as more than just a favourite on the Leeds Road terraces.A centre-half of exceptional skill he was an automatic first team choice during his 12 years at Huddersfield. Known as the ‘Gentleman of Football’, his reliability gave him over 500 appearances for Town, missing only a handful of games throughout his stay. Tom's is a true ‘rags to riches’ story.Born and raised in Seaham, County Durham he first played for Seaham Boys before going to Seaham Colliery to work down the pit. He played for Seaham Colliery before being joining Sunderland in 1914. The First World War intervened in his career before he had the chance to establish himself in Sunderland’s first team. He joined up and received the Military medal for Bravery in the Field before coming home from the war.He played one more game for Sunderland before being released by them (he had put on weight whilst in service). Fortunately, he was spotted playing for Sunderland by a scout from Huddersfield and was approached by them. He joined Town in 1919 when they were at their lowest point, struggling in Division 2 with huge debts. They were on the brink of collapse, indeed an arrangement to amalgamate the club with Leeds United had been made! Tragedy was averted however, and this became the springboard for success for the next decade. At the end of the 1920 season Huddersfield were promoted from Division 2, finishing runners-up. Over the next 5 years Huddersfield Town became the most successful club in England.Herbert Chapman became Manager in 1920/21 and masterminded an FA Cup win, 2 FA Cup final defeats and three consecutive Division 1 Titles as well as 2 Runners-up places, an amazing achievement. Tom Wilson captained Huddersfield throughout most of this period and made 52 successive FA Cup appearances, a club record. He captained Huddersfield to their only FA Cup triumph, beating Preston North End 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in 1922.Tom Wilson established himself as one of the best defenders in England though he only represented his country once, in 1928 against Scotland. He did however earn Football League honours. Tom Wilson is beyond doubt one of the greatest players ever to pull on a Town shirt and is in a select number of Huddersfield Town players who can truly be called ‘greats’.In 1931, Tom joined Blackpool for one season, helping them to avoid relegation. He also coached Barnsley before his death in 1948 at the age of 51.
