CHRISTIE, Agatha Poirot and the Regatta Mystery First Separate Edition, slim octavo, illustrated stiff card covers designed by 'Jeffery' with some staining, rust to staple bind causing regular defects (i.e staining to leaves), central leaf debound, a good copy of an early scarce work, pp.16, Vallencey Press Limited, London, [1945].The Regatta Mystery was first published in issue 546 of The Strand Magazine in June 1936. The story was included in the US only collection The Regatta Mystery (Dodd, 1939), and would not appear in a UK book until Thirteen for Luck! (Collins, 1966). An extremely scarce work. Minor spots of staining thinley spread on the card wraps, wera to the edge of the spine but still holding firm, rusted staples with staining throughout, the centre leaf pages 7 to 10 is de bound and loose; regardless of its faults I would consider this scarce copy to be in a very good condition.

(Lamorna and Newlyn art colonies) Alfred and Cecily Sidgwick A small archive of letters and photos. Twenty three ALS including postcards from Alfred to Ella Naper (Jeweller and Ceramicist 1929-1934). Letters contain chatty detail, description of Augustus John, the Cades at Minnack etc; Six ALS by Alfred to his father R.H. Sidgwick, mill owner at Skipton; Four Carte de Visit photos of Alfred as a boy and as a young man.An important collection detailing the life of the Lamorna and Newlyn art colonies.Cecily (1854-1934) a novelist writing first as Mrs Andrew Dean, then as Mrs Alfred Sidgwick, produced many works between 1889 and 1934. Her most interesting novels would become essential reading in the study of the art colony at Newlyn and Lamorna (Munnings and Knight). Alfred (1850-1943), a philosopher and fellow at Manchester University. The Sidgwicks eventually made their home at Trewoofe Orchard, Lamorna, in 1912. Wherein is contain'd all Manner of Cookery: Together with Preserving, Conserving, Drying, and Candying. Very necessary for all Ladies and Gentlewomen,' two vols bound in one, later full calf library binding, gilt tooled lettering to spine, tear with loss to heavily toned title page, contemporary ink signature to verso, heavy toning throughout, although fair to good, the text is perfectly legible, scarce, H. Mortlock, at the Phoenix in St. Paul's Churchyard, London, 1687.A very popular collection of medical and culinary recipes, first published in 1653 and which ran to numerous revised editions. Although the work is usually listed under the Countess of Kent, the dedication is signed 'W.J.', and it was probably compiled by William Jar, a member of the Countess's household. The dedication of A Choice Manual is to 'the virtuous and most noble Lady, Latitia Popham', the wife of a supporter of Oliver Cromwell, and A True Gentlewomans Delight is dedicated to Mistress Anne Pile, a baronet's daughter. 'The first book is purely medical, and recommends the usual filthy remedies, e.g. the dung of a peacock for convulsions and powdered earthworms for jaundice... The second book is the cookery part, and tells how to make a slipcoat Cheese, Angellets, fine Diet-bread, Essings, Ponado, Bonny Clutter, Lady of Arundels Manchet, &c.' (Oxford). Tear with loss to heavily toned title page, contemporary ink signature to verso, heavy toning with small tears and nibbles throughout; The leaves are particularly dry due to the toning, fair.

Crosbie Garstin Garstin's very own bound copies of his writings of 'The Ladies Home Journal' Folio, cloth with gilt tooled lettering to front board, small nibbles to front pastedown and ffep, being the bound copies of Garstin's writings the pagination is irregular, illustrations throughout, The Curtis Publishing Company, Philadelphia, 1925- 1927.Following the enormous success of 'The Owls House', the first novel in Garstin's Penhale trilogy, Barton Currie the editor of the American magazine 'The Ladies Home Journal', negotiated with the publishers Heinemann for truncated versions of the subsequent two novels, to be serialized. He subsequently commissioned Garstin to write a travelogue of Indo-China (the Dragon & Lotus), titled in the magazine as 'Around the World I Go'.The writings that made Garstin's name in the USA.
