As specialists in the revivalist Archaeological and Renaissance styles, Brogdens exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867 and 1878, for which Newman received a medaille d'honneur as a collaborative designer.Following Brogden's death in 1884, Newman established her own eponymous jewellery business from premises near Bond Street and then Savile Row in London, where she was known as 'Mrs Philip Newman', retaining some of Brogden's staff. By signing her pieces 'Mrs N', Newman was able to distinguish that her pieces were designed by a woman, at a time when the jewellery industry was heavily male dominated, and quickly generated the interest of art journals and the press. She continued to produce jewellery in the antiquarian style and was particularly skilled in the use of granulation, enamels and coloured gemstones, with references to Arts and Crafts design in her later work. SÉAMUS MURPHY RHA (1907 - 1975)Death Mask of Patrick Kavanagh Plaster cast, 29cm longSigned and dated (19)'67Patrick Kavanagh died on the early hours of the 1st December 1967 in the Merrion Nursing Home. Seamus Murphy the sculptor took the mould for a death mask later on the same day. Murphy a contemporary of Kavanagh's had first met him in Cork 1943. He has made a significant impression on Kavanagh who admired the intensity of his personality. Murphy had only taken one death mask previously, that of Arnold Bax in 1957. He was to make only three death masks in his career when in 1971 Seamus Ennis died. The Kavanagh mask being the second. The present one is one of three casts in plaster known to exist. One being in the Kavanagh centre in County Monaghan. Another in the Dublin Writer's Museum. The present mask was acquired some years ago by the present owner but was believed to have at one time belonged to Joan Ryan of whom Kavanagh was very fond, having proposed marriage to her when she was already dating Eoin Ryan who later became her husband. Signed and dated by Seamus Murphy this death mask constitutes an iconic image of one of Ireland's greatest and definitely most popular poets.
A STAFFORDSHIRE FLAT BACK POTTERY GROUP OF BOXERS JOHN HEENAN AND TOM SAYERS 19th CENTURY, modelled in boxing stance, bare-chested and dressed in blue and orange belted trousers, on naturalistic base, inscribed with their surnames. 23cm high, 15cm wideThe first ‘world title’ in international boxing took place in a field at the back of the Ship Inn in Farnborough, Hampshire on April 17th 1860 and lasted an astonishing 2 hours and 27 minutes. The two competitors were the American John Heenan and Briton Tom Sayers, both bare knuckle fighters. They went to 37 rounds before the fight was abandoned by the referee. It was declared a draw and both were awarded championship belts.Prize fighting was illegal in the 19th century and so they opted for an unofficial location, somewhat out of sight. The rural field also provided a potential escape route for the fighters if the Hampshire Constabulary showed up, which they did, Heenan and Sayers could cross the Blackwater River and be over the county border into Surrey.A crowd of 12,000 strong attended the fight, worked up into a bloodthirsty mania. The brutality of it shocked the rest of the nation and Parliament ushered in legislation to finally put and end to bare-knuckle fighting. For Heenan and Sayers it was not the end of their professional relationship but strangely led to a blossoming friendship. They went on to tour the country putting on exhibition fights that commemorated the faithful day in Farnborough. The Staffordshire pottery workshop began to make these figural groups in 1860 recognising the historic importance of the fight in boxing history.
