Encouraged by Norwich artist Edward Elliot, in 1903 Munnings attended L'Atelier Julian in Paris. It was the first of a number of short visits, often just a few weeks, that he made to Paris. Here he attended life classes and was introduced to the works of Gericault, Degas, Bastien-Lepage and Fantin-Latour. The influence of his time at L'Atelier shows in the present work. Apart from the Octagon and some surrounding buildings, the house was demolished in 1926.*Notes Literature 'The Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory-Alexandre Brongniart and the Triumph of Art and Industry, 1800-1847'. Page 287/90..."A first Crater Vase...blue ground views of the château des Tuileries and Wickenham [sic], slightly cracked, entered the sales inventory on April 30, 1836 and was delivered to the Grand Trianon on April 22, 1837 with production expenses of 1,043.75 francs; sale price of 1,000 francs. A second example, unflawed but otherwise identical, entered the sales inventory on September 10, 1836 and was "delivered to Her Majesty the Queen as a gift for M.Lelong the owner of Twickenham" on the following October 3. A third example entered the sales inventory on May 18, 1838 and the following July was delivered on Louis-Philippe's orders to his sister, Madame Adélaïde. Yet another example was entered on February 8, 1848; it may well correspond to the present design. Apparently the Orleans family had fond memories of the English country house where they had spent the last months of their long exile during the Napoleonic years".
