Studies of Hamlet and other coeval plays and poems reveal that this controversy was well-known in England at the time. Ink inscription on front endpaper reads: "This book gave occasion to Parsons to write his Book of Mitigation 1607." Provenance: Hinton Coventree (ink inscription on title, dated 1631 "Ye book Left in my fathers studdy at his death."); Philip, Lord Hardwicke (bookplate).

A Plea For the Free Possession, and a Renovation of the Art of Physick, first edition, initial licence leaf, old ink stamp on title, occasional foxing, contemporary calf, rebacked, a little rubbed, [Wing N397; Garrison-Morton 2529], 8vo, Printed for Richard Lownds, 1665.*** The author (1620-78, alternative spelling Marchamont Nedham) was a journalist and pamphleteer during the English Civil War. This work is an attack on the outmoded methods of the College of Physicians and includes an early account, perhaps the first by an English writer, of the germ theory, based on Athanasius Kircher's experiment (see chapter V).Provenance: James Master (ink name on licence leaf); College of Physicians (ink stamp to title).

This seemingly the second edition, with the first edition published in 1674 (Wing P2074A). Of this first edition we can trace only one copy at the University of Illinois Library. Pfrozheimer does not include the edition of 1674, understanding the 1675 edition to be the first. Provenance: W.H. Kühl, Berlin (bookseller's label to pastedown).

It includes descriptions of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, Arab shipping, Prester John, "the famous Unicorne", and palm trees.

The play was first published in quarto format in 1634 but not included in any of the of the folio editions of Shakespeare's works or in the first folio of Beaumont and Fletcher's works (1647) . This second edition includes eighteen additional plays which did not appear in the first folio edition.
