Lot 301

1970 Triumph Herald 13/60 Registration number: CXE 604J Date of first registration: 07 09 1970 VIN number: GE73285CV Engine number CE79818HEA MOT expires: 25/02/2022 V5C present listing 10 former keepers Current mileage shown: 94077 1296cc Red This example appeared in Last of the Summer Wine, driven by Thora Hird HPI checked. The Triumph Herald was introduced by Standard-Triumph of Coventry in 1959 and made through to 1971. The body design was by the Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti, and the car was offered in saloon, convertible, coupé, estate and van models, with the latter marketed as the Triumph Courier. Total Herald sales numbered well over half a million. The Triumph Vitesse, Spitfire and GT6 models are all based on modified Herald chassis and running gear with bolt-together bodies. In October 1967 the range was updated with the introduction at the London Motor Show of the Herald 13/60. The 13/60 was offered in saloon, convertible and estate-bodied versions. The sun-roof remained available for the saloon as an optional extra rather than a standard feature. The car has been subject to a comprehensive restoration. Paintwork can be described as excellent, finished in striking red with a deep, flat shine probably better than its original factory finish. The interior appears to be original and in wonderful condition with gentle wear in localised areas consummate with age. Carpets have been recently replaced and the hood is in excellent order and operates as it should. Triumph Heralds have, for a long time, been undervalued but nice examples are exceeding the 10k mark. This is an opportunity to acquire a beautifully restored and maintained example with TV history giving it the edge over most Heralds on the market today.

Powered at first by a 60BHP inline 4, this model then got the more powerful Essex V4.    Sporting the popular V4 engine, this is a very nice and honest example with bags or originality, very much an enthusiasts car, it has appeared from longterm ownership and although not a show car is a very smart and correct Corsair.  The paintwork is generally very nice with some wear and some micro blistering.Chrome work and stainless over the entire car is bright and straight. The interior appears to be extremely original and gives the impression that this has been a well maintained and loved classic all its life.  Definitely a car that could be used as a daily driver but could be improved and detailed. It is however an extremely solid and rust free example of this iconic sixties ford with the much sought after V4 engine with the refinements of the Deluxe badge

Lot 1

1995 PERAVES SUPER TURBO ECOMOBILE, Chassis number 5055, Engine number 925.406.065A rare opportunity to purchase a 'feet forward' motorcycle designed by Arnold Wagner and produced by the Swiss company Peraves. The Ecomobile was designed on aerodynamic and aircraft principles, it has a monocoque chassis formed of Kevlar, and a glider type screen. It is a two-seater with seat belts and there is a small amount of room at the rear of the vehicle for a small amount of luggage. The Ecomobile has a BMW K100 engine and transmission which is mounted at the rear with BMW forks at the front. The controls and instruments are also BMW and all BMW parts were supplied new from the BMW factory. The controls are very similar to a motorcycle except for the foot clutch and the hand control gear box which is modified so that the first gear is reverse, and the four remaining gears are forward. The two wheels which act as stabilisers are lowered and raised at the driver's instigation. They use a patented mechanism worked by a modified starter motor. When not in use the stabilisers are raised to the side of the vehicle and in the event of the vehicle dropping then it comes to rest on the retracted wheels. It cruises at somewhere between 100 and 120mph and has a top speed of approximately 150mph.89 Ecomobiles were made between 1985 and 2005. This vehicle, made in 1995, appeared on the BBC's Top Gear television programme in April 2008 (and can still be seen with a very youthful Jeremy Clarkson on You Tube). It was purchased, secondhand, by the current owner directly from Arnold Wagner in 2005. It is believed that there are approximately five Ecomobiles currently in the UK. There are a number of Ecomobile owners in Switzerland and Germany and a few in the United States of America. The current owner commented "I bought mine in 2005 from Arnold Wagner in Winterthur and drove it home, using the Chunnel, arriving on 7/7, in the middle of the bomb attacks. I had planned on doing 2 full days of training but it was raining and I was busy, so ended up with one afternoon. Once you get moving it is pretty easy to drive, the challenge is the transition from 4 wheels to 2 and remembering to adjust for camber when you put the wheels down. As a glider pilot the seating position and excellent view feel very comfortable and natural. Wherever it goes it always draws a crowd of friendly folk asking what it is. I commuted round Hyde Park corner a few times but in truth it is a better cross-country machine than for fighting your way through traffic. Long fast sweeping bends are pretty close to automotive heaven. You just drive round anything in the way. Nothing can match the ability to corner at speed - cars, big bikes, supercars. All disappear behind quite quickly. I hope someone will use it and enjoy it for what it is - a very special, rather brilliant mode of rapid transport. Not well suited to a family with a bunch of young children, although my middle son did ask me to drive it to school and park it right outside so all his friends could see it."The current owner advises me that it was last started three years ago. The vehicle has been taxed and insured in the UK and had a UK MOT which has now expired. The sale includes a file of documents, owner's and service and technical manual etc. Note: This lot is sold "as seen, as is and where is" and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.

Lot 126

AN IMPORTANT GILT AND LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF A RAKANJapan, 17th – early 18th century, early Edo period (1615-1868)The graceful, long-waisted figure is shown seated in padmasana, his richly decorated monastic robe worn around his torso, draped over both shoulders and falling in graceful folds below the legs as if draped over an edge, a kesa covering the left shoulder, the neck creased and the slender face well cast with crisp features set in a contemplative expression.HEIGHT 70 cmCondition: Traces of use and old wear as expected, some touchups, age cracks and losses. Generally in very good condition, commensurate with age, and better than most lacquered and gilt wood statues of this size and period. Provenance: Ancient French Private Collection “F”. Thence by descent within the same family. A copy of an image showing the living room of the family mansion, with the present figure as a centerpiece, dating from c. 1900, is accompanying this lot.Rakan, also known as Luohan in Chinese or Arhat in Sanskrit, is the 'Destroyer of the Passions'. They vary in numbers between 16 and 108 and were depicted in Japanese art from the 8th century onwards. As Buddha’s apostles, Arhats were first mentioned as sixteen in the Mahayanavataraka which was translated into Chinese in AD 437 and later also into Japanese. A full transcript of these sixteen names was given in AD 653 by the pilgrim monk Xuan Zang with the additional two that were probably adopted by the end of the 10th century, these being the Arhats who tamed the Dragon and the Tiger representing Eastern and Western directions respectively. There are only few surviving examples of gilt-lacquer figures of Arhats dating to the early Edo period, making the present statue exceptionally rare. The superb carving and imposing style is related to that of two gilt-bronze figures of Luohan dated to the Chinese Song dynasty and sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 1 October 1991, lot 1668. Another related Chinese figure of a Luohan is illustrated by Hajek, Chinesische Kunst in Tschechoslowakischen Museen, Prague, 1954, no. 115. All of these figures - Japanese and Chinese - share a similarity in the fluid execution of the drapery and the almost portrait-like naturalism of the facial features. The discovery of some forty clay figures of Luohan at the Lingyan Temple in China, dated to the Song period, but of smaller size, is recorded by Wenwu 1994:3, pages 76-82. In their animated gestures, quality of portraiture and the treatment of the fluid folds of drapery at the front, they also bear resemblance to the present figure.Auction comparison:Compare with a closely related bronze figure of a Luohan from the Song Dynasty, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, 30 November 2016, lot 3233 (sold for 34,140,000 HKD - c. 3.5 million EUR). Mrs. Appleby had a particular interest in Asian art, and she and her husband supported the Department of Asian Art as well as the Fund for The Met, providing for important acquisitions and institutional initiatives.Ogawa Haritsu (formerly often referred to outside Japan by his alternative name of Ritsuo) was among the first Japanese lacquer artists to establish an independent reputation outside of the hereditary craft dynasties of Kyoto, Edo, and Kanazawa. Following an early career as a haiku poet, he is thought to have first turned his attention to lacquer design in middle age and soon attracted a wide following thanks to his novel choice of subject matter and pioneering and imaginative use of unusual materials; at some point after 1710 he was hired by Tsugaru Nobuhisa (1669-1747), lord of a domain in northern Japan, for whom he worked until 1731.Auction comparison:Compare a related but smaller inlaid wood box and cover signed Ritsuo and with the same pink seal Kan, but depicting a different subject, at Van Ham, Asiatische Kunst, 9 June 2016, Cologne, lot 2263 (sold for 10,320 EUR). OGAWA HARITSU (RITSUO): A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE POLYCHROME GLAZED CERAMIC IREMONO (BOX) AND COVERAttributed to Ogawa Haritsu (Ritsuo, 1663-1747), signed on the original wood box Haritsu saku kaizukushiJapan, first half of 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Superbly modeled in the form of a cluster of shells, the largest an upturned awabi (abalone) and the other a sazae (horned turban) resting against a closed clam encrusted with barnacles, each with a separately fashioned lid decorated with different varieties of crustacea interspersed with seaweed. With the original wood awasebako (fitted box), with two paper labels, inscribed Haritsu saku kaizukushi (‘Made by Haritsu. Assortment of shells’).HEIGHT 13 cm, WIDTH 32 cm, DEPTH 27.5 cmCondition: Excellent condition with only minor surface wear. Provenance: British private collection, formerly with Gregg Baker.Ogawa Haritsu (formerly often referred to outside Japan by his alternative name of Ritsuo) was among the first Japanese lacquer artists to establish an independent reputation outside of the hereditary craft dynasties of Kyoto, Edo, and Kanazawa. Following an early career as a haiku poet, he is thought to have first turned his attention to lacquer design in middle age and soon attracted a wide following thanks to his novel choice of subject matter and pioneering and imaginative use of unusual materials; at some point after 1710 he was hired by Tsugaru Nobuhisa (1669-1747), lord of a domain in northern Japan, for whom he worked until 1731.In lacquer, he introduced a vocabulary of new materials not usually associated with lacquer artists such as glazed ceramic pieces, mother-of-pearl and lead. Haritsu also mastered the technique of making lacquer surfaces appear to resemble other materials such as bronze, tile, ink sticks and pottery, a style of decoration which became known as Haritsu saiku.Shells in combination with seaweed were a favored subject of Ogawa Haritsu and his followers, see for example a wood bunko decorated with very similar ceramic shells recently sold at Bonhams, Fine Japanese and Korean Art, 17 March 2021, New York, lot 594 (sold for 27,812 USD).The applied glazes in the present example are certainly emulative of lacquer, being a key feature of Ogawa Haritsu’s designs. The combination of elements flow over seamlessly into one another making it rather difficult to decide whether an individual decorative element is glazed or lacquered.
