Lot 1

The world's first postage booklet available to the public, produced for commercial purposes by the Stamp Distribution Syndicate in 1891, sealed intact in cream paper envelope with punch holes and 'SDS' perfin tab, the woven cover inscribed 'Memoranda'. One of the rarest domestic booklets and this certainly one of the finest extant, with just a few small breaks at edge of the fragile wrapper. Cat. £9,000.

Lot 118

Accumulation in a plastic crate with two albums and loose year/presentation packs. There are issues from 19th century onwards, however the main value is in mint sets 1990s to at least 2004, with over £400 face value. One of the albums is a special binder (cover damaged) of large limited edition First Day lithographs with 34 different for GB and Islands 1980/81.

1911 Harrison printed booklet, BA6, first two 1d. panes inverted wmk, the third 1d pane (displaced clichés) and the ½d panes upright wmks. Very attractive quality overall and decent perfs for this issue. Cat. £2,800 (or £3,200+ as unmounted panes).

Two containers of albums and envelopes including a Great Britain collection in seven loose-leaf albums, the first book with four penny blacks, two with margins all round, another with red MX combined with partial black cds though heavy vertical crease, interesting 1d red imperfs incl. numbers in cross cancels, extensive perforate line-engraved incl. 1d reds to plate 224, then cds surface-printed to 2/- blue, plus 1884 5/- examples with unusual postmarks, then lots of KEVII, especially officials with two pages of Admiralty ovpts, KGV with inverted wmks, much duplication through to the later definitives, especially the high values. There is also a book for the mint from QV 1d reds onwards, Kings with control numbers and plate blocks, watermark varieties, much MNH incl. KEVII to 1/- pair and KGVI high values, etc. as well as oddities incl. Earl of Bradford pre-cancel ovpt on QV 1d lilac. Also thousands of stamps in manila envelopes, one with British Commonwealth high values or revenues KGV onwards, some interesting postal history noted with naval/maritime theme, as well as GB booklets and sets in gutter blocks with face value at least £600.

Neatly presented collection in ten Senator albums, the first book with QV to pre-decimal QEII issues incl. useful range of Jubilee and KEVII mint to 1/-, all the KGVI high values mint, etc, the following ten volumes with a solid run of MNH sets, highly complete Machins and regionals, 1st class se-tenant blocks and booklet panes through to 2017. Face value alone will run to well over £3,000.

Small balance of Edward VII issues with two examples of the first booklet BA1, one very fine with good perfs, the other unusually with Stirling cds First Day cancels 'MR 16 04' on the front and inside the front cover. Also two 1d panes MB5a both MNH (cat. £500 for hinged). Total cat. £1,500.

One of the better books from the 170-volume worldwide collection (Lot 178), a large stockbook with about 2000 mint and used stamps, starting with the first classics including Ceres 1fr x2 with faults, Napoleon to 5fr (usual thins), Peace and Commerce to 5fr incl. mint 1886 25cts black on rose and 1900 2fr, good postage dues, lots of Mouchons and sowers to explore again with useful mint, war orphans 1917 to 1fr+1fr mint and the 1922 surcharges and 1922-27 new values sets mint, 1918 red-cross MNH and used, sinking funds sets, high values especially the 10fr blue La Rochelle with unusual shades of the type I mint and used, 1936 50fr green airmail and 10fr flying boat used, through to better 1950s relief fund sets mint, etc. Condition issues, principally tone spots, nevertheless plenty of good items here. Please inspect.

Collection in six stockbooks, duplication from the very first issues onwards, the classics in mixed condition as to be expected yet much collectable quality incl. a range of 10cts Napoleon pairs with various postmarks, the 1fr Napoleon a fairly convincing forgery, also useful Bordeaux issues, imperf postage dues, peace and commerce to 5fr, coloured dues with mint top values, early charity issues and surcharges, 1936 10fr flying boat unused and used, 1937 PEXIP m/s mint (small faults), lots of useful 1930s to 1950s sets and high values incl. 1954 portraits set used, 1955 set mint and used, etc, continuing to 2001, the later years less solid. Needs inspection.

Lot 154

Mint and used collection housed in a Simplex album, stockbook and cover album, including a useful range of QV and KEVII, KGV to $2 used, 'China' ovpts mint to 30cts, then good KGVI with 1941 centenary set MNH, the $10 silver wedding MNH and used plus the set on first day cover, the defins to $10 mint vlh and used, followed by QEII 1954-62 definitive set to $10 MNH and later mint sets to $50. In the stockbook a range of revenues, perfins, 19th century postmarks, etc, late 20th century plate blocks and miniature sheets, plus FDCs from 1965 through to late 1990s. Sold for the benefit of the RSPB.

Collection of approx. 2000 mint and used stamps displayed in two Davo hingeless albums, beginning with (used unless otherwise stated) Geneva reference examples, 'orts-post' and ten Federal 'rayon' issues in varying condition, four with Sismondo certificates, followed by the imperf Helvetias to 1fr grey, 1862 perf Helvetias including 3cts black and 1fr bronze-gold (SG.60, cat. £500), numerals incl. 1894 12cts dull blue mint (SG.131Bd, cat. £425), extensive standing Helvetias with several types to 3fr, good varieties continuing through the early 20th century issues, then 1919/20 first airmail ovpts mint (the 30cts signed), 1936 pro patria m/s MNH and 1945 war relief fund m/s, 1945 PAX set with 2fr and 3fr used and 5fr and 10fr MNH (cat. £600), officials/departments incl. refugee set used, 'Industrielle Kriegswerkschaft' ovpts with and without serif sets mint including the good 7½cts type (SG.O299/O300, O302/O315, cat. £1,850), well-filled postage due first page, etc. A decent collector's collection often with mint/used and shades stacked in the same space, plus extra pages for varieties. Then Canada in SG album incl. 1897 50cts jubilee cds used, Quebec set mint, etc, India on album pages with 4a red and blue cut-to-shape, revenues incl. green 'postage' ovpt on 6as lilac, KEVII to 10rs, KGV to 10rs mint and 15rs used, CEF ovpt set mint, useful Convention and Native States, Muscat, etc. Also South Africa album incl. Somewhat eccentrically organised collection of 10s of 1000s of stamps in over 170 stockbooks large and small in 14 boxes, strength in 21st century new issues, especially miniature sheets, into the 2010s, notably China, US, France, New Zealand with year packs to 2013. Also early issues in mixed condition, revenues, etc. We note China 3ca small dragon and bean goose to $2 used, 1980s sets mint and FDC incl. souvenir sheets (2 volumes), Hong Kong incl. KGVI defins to $10 green and violet used, Japan with imperf dragons (possibly forged), Iraq 1949 airmail miniature sheets imperf and perf MNH, Sudan 1935 General Gordon set mint, 1948 set MNH, US with 6cts Columbus mint, 10cts Shanghai surcharge hiding among the pages of pre-cancels, etc. The French area perhaps the best including Monaco with 1885 first issues incl. 5cts and 10cts mint, 1fr used (SG.9, cat. £700), first Prince Albert heads to 5fr mint and used, 1919 war orphans used to 1fr+1fr (SG.31/36, cat. £950) and 1920 surcharges (SG.38/46, cat. £600), etc. Another good book is the French Andorra highly complete (though toning issues) including the first set and first postage dues mint (SG.F1/F23, FD24/FD38, cat. £2,500). Thorough viewing advised.

1918 3/- booklet, BB18, edition 1, first two panes and last pane wmks upright, the 1d panes and first ½d pane inverted. The cover with minor corner wrinkle and losses to the gloss on reverse, still highly collectable quality. Cat. £1,850.

Three albums containing British topography, The first two albums each holding approx. 260 and 240 cards respectively of Multiviews mainly from the 1940 – 1970s, mainly standard sized. A third album of about 310 cards of London, again many common scenes but reasonable coverage of the exhibitions; Franco British 1908, Latin British 1912, British Empire in 1924 – 5 and Festival of Britain 1951.

An attractive album containing approx. 170 postcards, all of a Military theme. Many Tuck Oilettes / Artist Drawn by such as Harry Payne and others. A good printed range of other Army / Regimental studies and group and a few Real Photographic cards of The 2nd Lincolns, Royal Scot Greys, 3rd Batt. Grenadier Guards etc along with some loose subject cards in envelopes. Also a scrap album containing a collection of Postal History from KGV – Early QEII with some First Day Covers, a small stock book of used stamps, some Royal Event mint stamps and a small cigarette card album.

The first holding a good selection of Military cards both British and trench scenes from Flanders and the Western Front with Real Photographic, printed any a few artist drawn examples such as Scenes in a Tommy’s Life (3). A selection of Whitby, Staithes topo views, Football, Cricket and Fairies by Margaret Tarrant, Rene Cloke and Constance Symonds. The second album contains Comic, Children including Mabel Lucy Attwell , Greetings, Dogs, Cats and other animals and a little aviation.

1935 3/- booklet, BB27, edition 289, the ½d first pane upright wmk, the rest inverted. Three edges total with trimmed perfs, faint script indentation at top of cover, immaculate quality otherwise and scarce as such. Cat. £2,100.

1904 first issued booklet BA1 with 'Specimen' overprint type 16, watermarks inverted. Negligible faults only, excellent quality for this very scarce specimen booklet. Cat. £4,000.

Lot 42

1936 first booklet issue of the reign with cancelled overprints type 33 (unpunched), the rarest Edward VIII booklet, very few examples known, especially in this quality. Dated as usual by handstamp '7 DEC 1936'. Additional to the four panes represented by colour scans shown in the photo online, there are a Dubarry Cologne ad in colour on card and the airmail labels pane. Cat. £2,500.

A magnificent run of thirty different editions of the 1936 first Edward VIII booklet, 2/- with blue cover (BC2), editions 354-376, 378, 380-385, ie. only missing two editions for completion. Quality throughout is extremely high, the single minor exception being small script date on number 382. Cat. £4,200.

1936 3/- booklet BC3, run of 12 editions, numbers 320-323, 325-332. Only missing one edition for completion. Generally exceptional quality throughout. Perfs naturally vary. Tone spot at top of first pane of 327 seems virtually the only fault. Cat. £1,440.
