Eric Griffiths - Set of ten abstract watercolours, largely depicting figure scenes in bright colours, each signed and dated circa 1988/89, and two others similar, believed to be by Eric Griffiths' daughter, the largest 51 x 38cm. Background: Until his retirement in 1990 Eric Griffiths was Director of Sculpture at Royal Doulton. He contributed to a number of models in the HN collection, most notable were his Royal Family portrait figures, as well as designs for the Haute Ensemble, Images and Reflections series. Eric's artistic nature was first discovered while recuperating after a life threatening injury in his youth.
A LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY AUBUSSON TAPESTRY after designs by Charles Le Brun, depicting Alexander and Porus, woven with equestrian figures including that of the victorious Alexander with his plumed helmet and on his white charger in the foreground, with the defeated and wounded figure of Porus being carried towards him, with an encampment visible on the horizon, within a four-sided border woven with military trophies on a brown ground, with a further inner narrow banded yellow and brown border and later similar outer border (the brown selvedge replaced) approx. 103" x 91" (see illustration) Provenance : Christie's, London, 13th November 1986, Lot 229; Sotheby's, London, 13th November 1978, Lot 55 NOTES : This tapestry is from a series depicting The Battles and The Triumphs of Alexander the Great. Charles Le Brun (1619-1690) submitted the designs for this set to the newly united Gobelins Manufactory in 1660-1662 and it was first woven in 1664. The Le Brun designs were later adapted and extended by the leading weavers of Brussels. They were also reproduced at the Aubusson Manufactory of which the present tapestry is a good example. Tapestry editions of this set are recorded as having been woven as late as 1757 when the Aubusson workshop of Goubert supplied the Polish Franciszeck Potocki with a set.

A Dutch green glass bottle, painted with a portrait of Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp, within a foliate border, the bottle 18th century, the decoration probably later, 21cm.Cf. Maarten Tromp was Lieutenant-Admiral of the Dutch navy and commanded the United Provinces to victory against the Spanish in the 1639 Battle of the Downs. He was killed in action in 1653 during the First Anglo-Dutch War.
A ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND FIVE POUND NOTE AUTOGRAPHED BY JACK NICKLAUS, serial number JWN0394023, with signed letter stating that the £5 note was signed by Jack Nicklaus at East Lake on the occasion of Bobby Jones 75th Anniversary of his Grand Slam, The Royal Bank of Scotland issued a special commemorative £5 note to honour Nicklaus. The note as you can see from the illustration bears his image. The note was produced in recognition of his Open Championship victories and apart from Queen Elizabeth II and the late Queen Mother, Nicklaus is the only other living person ever to appear on a Scottish banknote. The notes went into circulation on July 14th 2005, which was the first day of Nicklaus’s 38th and last Open Championship appearance. From research only very few were personally signed by Jack Nicklaus.

A CONTINENTAL GOLD 1960-61 EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS’ CUP RUNNERS-UP MEDAL, the reverse inscribed Cup Europ’a’ischer Cupsieger, 1961 Finalist, in original fitted case, Rangers became the first-ever British Club-side to participate in a major European final in 1961. On their way to this historical final match in the first-ever European Cup-Winners’ Cup Rangers defeated Ferencvaros 5-4 on aggregate; Borussia Monchengladbach 11-0 on aggregate and in the semi-final Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 on aggregate. In the 1st leg of the final played at Ibrox Park on 17th May 1961 Fiorentina defeated Rangers 2-0, with both goals being scored by Milani. In the 2nd leg of the final, played at the Communale Stadium, Florence on 27th May 1961, Fiorentina defeated Rangers 2-1, with Milani and Hamrin scoring for the home side and Scott scoring Rangers’ solitary reply.

No.5 in that match for Northern Ireland was Jackie Blanchflower. In the second match played on 7th October 1962 at Windsor Park, Scotland won the match 6-1. Dewar Esq, Sheriff Of London , 1897-8, with ring suspension, The above medal represents the first-ever match in the competition. In the opening match played on 19th March 1898 at the Crystal Palace, the Corinthians drew 0-0 with Sheffield United. It was decided by the committee that a replay was to be played. In the replay played on the 4th April again at the Crystal Palace the Corinthians and Sheffield United drew the match 1-1. It was decided that no extra-time would be played so the Corinthians and Sheffield United became joint holders of the inaugural competition

In the 2nd leg played on 23rd May, Borussia Moenchengladbach defeated Liverpool 2-0. This gave Liverpool a 3-2 aggregate victory. Lindsay played in all but one match of Liverpool’s triumphant UEFA Cup campaign this season
