Demetre CHIPARUS (1886-1947) "The High Priestess", circa 1920/30. Chryselephantine sculpture, bronze, ivory, onyx base Similar model reproduced in "Chiparus, Master of Art Deco", Alberto Shayo, Acc Art Books, 2016, Page 186, Plate 115. A CITES certificate will be provided. (Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947) was born in Dorohoi, Romania. In 1909, he left for Italy where he studied with Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912, he moved to Paris to perfect his art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the guidance of Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher. Chiparus is best known for his bronze and ivory sculptures, known as chryselephantines, depicting exotic dancers, mounted on pedestals of ribboned onyx or portor marble. Chiparus exhibited at the Salon in 1914, where he was awarded an honourable medal. He opened his own studio after the war and exhibited regularly at the salons. Most of his works were produced between 1914 and 1933. In the 1920s, Demetre Chiparus drew inspiration for his sculptures from excavations in Egypt, particularly the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb.
