Rare Glass Bowls, two fine, hand-blown bowls, the first measures approx 13 cms dia, the other approx 14 cms dia. Note: Note: When Pompeii was excavated at the end of the 19th century similar glass to this was discovered, The British Museum approached Mr Corbett (later of Webb & Corbett) to ask him to experiment applying various 'treatments' to white glass and copy the effects that the gases from Vesuvius had made on this excavated glass, he attempted to discover the element that created the beautiful colours and lustre. Mr Corbett was a personal friend of the Gater family and through him these wonderful examples came into their possession, it appears Mr Corbett succeeded in his endeavor and these are the beautiful result.

An uninscribed silver (possibly slightly debased) unit of the Southern Region/'Berkshire Tribe' dating c. 60-50 BC. Unpublished in ABC, classified by Chris Rudd as his 'Facing Horses Right' type. Obverse: no inscription, two horses rearing facing each other, sun motif in-between, above a second pair of rearing horses who turn their heads away from each other. Reverse: no inscription, ladder-maned horse prancing right, boar in-between legs, sun and uncertain motif above. Extremely rare, the third known. About Very Fine. Weight: 1.3g. Discussion: this coin represents the third known example of its type, probably being issued by the so-called 'Berkshire Tribe' whose coins have only recently (thanks to the efforts of metal detectorists) come to light. These coins, though manufactured indigenously, appear to have been partially inspired in their design by Gallo-Belgic types. The first known recorded on the CCI as no. 95.3389, the second on the PAS as HAMP-FCA2F3. Provenance: found near Shifford, Oxfordshire, 2018. Recorded on the PAS as NMS-2539D1.

A lot of two Middle Saxon strap ends, dating c. 750-900. The first decorated in the Trewhiddle style and of Thomas' class A2, depicting a single panel of decoration with a zoomorphic motif rendered in ornate interlace. The second of class B1, with a wedge-shaped upper panel and two sets of parallel transverse collars. Both with bat-like zoomorphic terminals. Lengths: c. 44mm/38mm. The first of William I 'The Lion' (1165-1214) short cross and stars coinage (phase B) dating c. 1205-1230, moneyers HVE and WALTER working jointly at the mints of either Edinburgh or Perth. The second of Alexander III (1249-1286) first coinage, voided long cross and stars type dating c. 1250-1280, probably minted by IOHAN at the mint of Perth (Rev: IOh/[….]PER). An incomplete cast copper-alloy anthropomorphic figurine of probable earlier Roman date, probably of the first or second century AD. Only about half the figurine survives, taking the form of a hooded and cloaked standing male before truncating abruptly in an old, worn break. Folds in the cloak are represented by parallel incisions, while on the face (though worn) the eyes and hair have been rendered quite realistically. Condition: good despite wear, even dark greenish patina. Length: c. 30mm. Discussion: this object may represent one of the genii cucullacti or 'hooded gods' apparently beloved in Late Iron Age and early Roman Britain. Named after their distinctive attire (the cucullus, a sort of conjoined hooded poncho), they are thought to be associated with the concepts of prosperity and fertility. A number of depictions are known, some in stone from Hadrian's wall, others in the form of small figurines somewhat similar to this potential example. Provenance: from the collection of an ex metal detectorist, found Oxfordshire/Berkshire/Hampshire in the 1980s or 1990s.

Lot 278
A complete cast copper-alloy finger ring dating to the Late Medieval period, c. 1400-1500. The ring is a signet type, demonstrating a ‘D’ sectioned hoop with a sub-rectangular bezel. The latter is inscribed with the initial ‘R’ (presumably that of the owner) surrounded by three frond motifs. Preserved well, though some patches of roughness. External maximum diameter of hoop: 24.22mm. Discussion: rings of this form with a single initial engraved on the bezel, first appeared in the 15th century. They appear to have been a ‘stock’ design, available to buy off the shelf with various different initials. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.

Lot includes a halfpenny of Richard II (1377-1399), good Fine with grainy surfaces and a small part of the flan broken away, a Rosette-Mascle issue halfpenny (Withers' type 1j) of Henry VI's first reign (1422-1461), a well worn and clipped penny of Edward IV's second reign (1471-1483) issued under Archbishop Booth of York (North 1659) and a distorted incomplete penny of Henry VII (1485-1509) struck under Archbishop Rotherham at York (North 1722).
