STUART DEVLIN: a silver candlestick with silver-gilt filigree shadeLondon 1972With detachable slightly tapering cylindrical silver-gilt filigree shade, with plain polished trumpet form base, height 37cm, weight 15.2oz.Footnotes:STUART DEVLIN AO CMG (1931 - 2018)Australian silversmith, jeweller and designer. Stuart Devlin ranks as one of the great contemporary gold and silversmiths and has been acclaimed by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths as the designer with 'the Midas touch'.Stuart Devlin, was born in Geelong, Australia in 1931. He trained at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and, in 1958, won a number of scholarships including one to study silversmithing under Professor Robert Goodden at the Royal College of Art, London. After spending a two year fellowship at Columbia University in America in 1962, he returned to Australia to teach and rose to become an inspector of art schools. In 1964, Stuart Devlin won a competition to design Australia's first decimal coinage. Devlin went on to be an accomplished coin designer, designing coins for over 36 countries worldwide and many more medallions, including the medals for the founding awards of the Australian honours system in 1975.On his return to London, in January 1965, Devlin set up a small workshop in Clerkenwell and the following year he employed his first craftsman. Devlin created new techniques and produced a wide variety of textures, filigree forms and gilding to create his distinctive style. Devlin aimed to design pieces that added 'delight, surprise, intrigue, and even amusement', this especially can be seen in his commercially successful limited edition novelty eggs and boxes. In 1972 Devlin transferred his retail gallery to the ground floor of his St. John Street workshop in Clerkenwell. After a sell-out collection at Asprey, Collingwoods of Conduit Street (in London's West End) set aside an entire floor exclusively for his work, in order to hold regular exhibitions. Between 1979 and 1985, in partnership with the Duke of Westminster, he set up a prestigious showroom in Conduit Street almost opposite Collingwoods. Devlin closed his London showroom in 1987.Devlin was made a freeman of the Goldsmiths' Company by special grant in 1966 and elected a liveryman in 1972. In 1980 he was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George 'for services to the art of design' and in 1982 was granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment as Goldsmith and Jeweller to Queen Elizabeth II. He was Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths Company 1996 – 1997.The Goldsmiths' Centre situated in Clerkenwell, was developed from a discussion in 2006 between Stuart Devlin, Hector Miller and Grant Macdonald. They proposed the visionary idea of establishing a creative institute for the goldsmith's craft. Devlin's initiative also had the additional aspect of managed workshops and facilities for exhibitions, corporate hospitality and catering.Stuart Devlin was Postgraduate Programme Director at the Goldsmiths' Centre, and while there passed on his inspiration, skills and ethic to enrich the way people live and work. The torch for the 2012 London Olympics was designed as a tribute to Stuart Devlin's retro style and British craftsmanship by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, and won the Design Museum's Design of the Year Award. In 2011 his wife Carole and sister-in-law Victoria Kate Simkin started to assemble his archive. It became the basis for a book which was published in 2018 shortly before Stuart Devlin died.Stuart Devlin: Designer Goldsmith Silversmith, published by ACC Art Books Ltd, 2018.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

In his position in the House of Lords he was virulently anti-Catholic and firmly opposed to the Catholic Relief Bill brought in under the premiership of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. In an open letter the Earl accused Wellington of acting surreptitiously, intent on 'the introduction of Popery into every department of the State.' After a series of (later published) private letters to each other tempers had escalated, and Wellington challenged the Earl to a duel. Wellington fired first and missed (intentionally, some reports claimed), and, after receiving fire, the Earl raised his arm deliberately and fired into the air. He afterwards published a letter expressing regret for the offence caused, and the matter was considered closed. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

An early Victorian ormolu mounted tulipwood, walnut and marquetry writing table in the Louis XV stylealmost certainly originally retailed by Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845), possibly made by Robert Blake & SonsCirca 1840, inlaid with assorted flowers and foliage, the shaped rectangular top inset with a tooled leather writing surface and with a moulded brass mounted edge, above a shaped frieze comprising one long and two short oak-lined drawers, on cabriole legs, 125cm wide x 65cm deep x 75cm high, (49in wide x 25 1/2in deep x 29 1/2in high)Footnotes:A virtually identical writing table to the present lot, dated circa 1835, sold Christie's, 1 April 2014, Style and Spirit, lot 387. That particular model, which was branded with the initials: 'EHB' - for the renowned figure of Edward Holmes Baldock - was either executed, or perhaps more likely subsequently retailed, by the firm of G. Trollope and Sons.Another closely comparable example, also having the 'EHB' brand to its underside, sold Bonhams, New Bond Street, 11 March 2009, Fine English Furniture, lot 114.Edward Holmes Baldock is listed in London Trade Directories of the period in various capacities. He first appears listed at 7 Hanway Street, London in 1805 described as a '...dealer in china and glass' and by 1821 as '...an antique furniture and ornamental furniture dealer'. By 1826 the various facets of the business included '...buying and selling, exchanging and valuing china, cabinets, screens, bronzes...' Baldock's business seems to have largely involved trading in foreign items and from 1832 to 1837 he was the purveyor of earthenware and glass to William IV, then later purveyor of china to Queen Victoria from 1838 until his death. Baldock is known to have repaired, remodelled and adapted furniture, often 18th century pieces, but he also designed furniture both in the 18th century style and in more contemporary styles. The pieces that appear with the 'EHB' cypher may have been made by him at his Hanway Street workshop but there is no documentary proof as to whether he both designed and manufactured them. Rather than being a straightforward manufacturer Baldock's activities link him more closely with the 18th century marchands-merciers such as Daguerre and Poirier.Interestingly, a further similar bureau plat is at Goodwood House, Sussex, but has the label for Messrs Blake of 8 Stephen Street, Tottenham Court Road rather than an 'EHB' brand. In the Furniture History Society Newsletter of May 2005 Martin Levy compares this table with another supplied to the Duke of Buccleuch by Baldock in 1841, this also has the 'EHB' stamp, the suggestion is that Baldock could have sub-contracted the work to the Blake family as there are obvious similarities in the output of the two firms. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. A French late 19th century ormolu mounted kingwood, rosewood and Vernis Martin meuble a hauteur d'appuieither by Maison Krieger or Joseph Emanuel ZwienerOf breakfront form, the moulded marble top above three panel mounts incorporating a central door enclosing two adjustable shelves, the central Vernis Martin scene depicting Cupid in attendance as Venus is presented with armour for her son Aeneas from Vulcan who sits nearby his forge, within an acanthus and lotus-leaf cast gilt bronze surround with scrolled acanthus and flowerhead mounted re-entrant angles, flanked by keeled angles with espagnolette mounts, over a central lion mask cartouche mounted apron, on acanthus headed lion paw sabots, 132cm wide, 47cm deep, 116cm high (51 1/2in wide, 18 1/2in deep, 45 1/2in high).Footnotes:ProvenanceThe offered lot allegedly formed part of the property of Countess Nadina Kapodistrias, whose name was an abbreviation of Diamandina. She was the mother of the renowned and popular Greek historical political figure, Ioannis Kapodistrias (1776-1831) who was Governor of Greece for four years. However it seems impossible that the present meuble a hauteur d'appui was ever owned either by Countess Nadina or her son Ioannis, due to the fact they both died quite some time before the cabinet was most likely executed during the last quarter of the 19th century.Despite this, the offered cabinet is reputedly documented in a message written by Countess Nadina's grandson which describes two pieces of furniture in the family collection. In this message the grandson relates how it is his intention to ship both the present model, along with another item, to Athens.A virtually identical side cabinet to the present lot, which has a lock plate engraved: 'Mon. KRIEGER AMEUBLEMENT, PARIS', thus evidently made by Maison Krieger, sold at Bonhams, The Elegant Home sale, Los Angeles, 8th June 2016, lot 367.The present piece shares a number of characteristics in common with two meubles a hauteur d'appui, or side cabinets, produced in France during the last quarter of the 19th century. The first comparable example, and apparently the most aesthetically similar to the offered model, is one dated circa 1880 attributed to Joseph Emanuel Zwiener (b.1849), which also incorporates a bold central Vernis Martin panel. This piece is available to view online at www.onlinegalleries.com.The resemblance between both examples is apparent not only in their triple panel mounted breakfront design, but also in the distinctive frieze mounts and female espagnolette mounts each with distinctive plumed headdress. While even the elegant scrolled acanthus mounts seemingly emanating from the top of the re-entrant angles are very similar.Another series of late 19th century Vernis Martin meubles d'appui were executed by the renowned cabinet maker, Henry Dasson. One of these cabinets, which is illustrated in C. Mestdagh, L'Ameublement d'Art Francais, 1850-1900, Paris, 2010, fig. 282, p. 240, is dominated by an impressive Vernis Martin scene painted with the same subject matter as the present lot. It likewise shows Venus accepting the armour made by Vulcan in his forge on behalf of her son Aeneas, while Cupid and another cherub are also in attendance.Maison Krieger Maison Krieger was founded in 1826 by Antoine Krieger (1804-1869) together with his brother Nicolas at 17, Rue Saint-Nicolas, in Paris. As one of the longest running cabinet makers of the 19th and 20th centuries, despite changing names several times, the firm belonged to various relatives and successive descendants of the Krieger family until the mid-20th century. From 1850 the company became known as Antoine Krieger & Cie. Just one year later Antoine Krieger won an award at the Great Exhibition. However, following Antoine's death in 1856, the business was taken over by his son-in-law and the new name of Maison Racault et Cie was then adopted. Subsequent alterations to the name of the firm included; H. Racault et Cie; Colin Damon et Cie in 1870; Damon, Namur et Cie in 1875; and Cosse-Racault et Cie from 1892 onwards. The Krieger enterprise was primarily based at 74, Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, which was one of the largest mechanised workshops in Paris during the second half of the 19th century. Krieger were renowned for making furniture in a great variety of historical and contemporary styles, although they were perhaps most celebrated for their Louis XVI and Empire output. By the end of the 20th century Krieger was one of the most important producers of furnishings in France, while their factories covered an expanse of more than five acres within the famous Faubourg St. Antoine district.LiteratureC.
