Print historical detail : They were the Screaming Eagles' most notorious unit, a small bunch of raw, tough, ruthless young men. Hard drinking and savage fighting and that was only in training with scant regard for authority. And if the reputation of this unique bunch of renegades within the ranks of the 101st was formidable, for the Germans it became one of sheer terror. Officially they were the First Demolition Squadron, HQ Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne. Unofficially they were the Filthy Thirteen. Superbly crafted in his unique blend of pencil and paint on tinted paper, Robert Taylor's classic new Master Drawing captures the moment on the night of 5 June 1944 when the 101st Airborne's legendary squad of elite paratroopers jump into battle in the vital hours before the D Day landings commence. The pilots of the 440th Troop Carrier Group struggle to keep their Dakotas level as deadly flak pummels the formation. Please note that this print was really hard to photograph as the surface was very reflective of the lights. The lights had to be turned off which is why the photograph of this print looks a little dark. The print is in near perfect condition, just really hard to photograph!Good condition. Belonged to Ian ‘Spike’ Sykes was born and raised in Leeds during the Second World War. A climber since his youth, he joined the RAF at sixteen, working on the Kinloss Mountain Rescue Team in the Scottish Highlands during a number of dramatic rescues. After leaving the RAF he worked with the British Antarctic Survey on the southern polar ice cap, where he ran a dog team and worked as a guide for the Survey’s field scientists. Back in Scotland, Spike and Ian Sutherland identified an opportunity for a climbing and outdoor equipment shop in the Highlands, and the first Nevisport shop was born. Both remained as members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue, the UK’s busiest team. Spike was also instrumental in the development of the ski area at Nevis Range on Aonach Mor, where he stayed on as managing director for twelve years. He is currently a director of Nevis Range, which is now also internationally renowned as a mountain biking centre. Spike was awarded an MBE in 1990 for services to sport and mountain rescue, and in 2011 he received the Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture. His first book, Cry Argentina (978-1-846248-71-9), a semi-fictional account of the build-up to the invasion of South Georgia in the Falklands War, was published in 2013. In the Shadow of Ben Nevis is his second book. Spike lives in Fort William with his partner Gay, and has a daughter Eilidh. The below letter from 'Spike' regarding his watch."I joined British Antarctic Survey in Autumn 1967 as a GA, effectively as a guide for scientists working on the Antarctic continent. I was 25 and had been in the RAF and an instructor in Outward Bound. I sailed from Southampton on the RRS Shackleton and arrived in Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands a month later. We were paid the princely sum of £500 a year, because for the next two and a half years I was to be in Antarctica my pay went directly into an account that accrued accordingly. It was an easy way for a young man to bank a couple of thousand pounds in less than three years, a princely sum in those days.I bought my Rolex Watch in Binnie’s General Store in Port Stanley, this was many years before the Falkland War and Stanley was a Tax-free Port. I then sailed on to my base, Stonington Island, about halfway down the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, where I picked up my dog team and spent the next two and a half very exciting years. The Rolex Explorer chronometer was the best watch I could afford at the time. It was long before the days of digital watches and has been dead accurate ever since the day I bought it."

For Robert Harling, writing in the Arthur Tooth & Sons catalogue, these works evoke a 'heady excitement' and the 'quality which made the tales of Tolstoy, Turgeniev, Chekov so haunting and memorable to my youth'. initially influenced by the work of the Surrealists, Felix Kelly became celebrated for his book cover designs, particularly for ghost stories including Faber and Faber's Best Horror Stories (1957) and Best Tales of Terror (1962), as well as for Haunted Houses (1956) by Joseph Braddock. The artist held his first one-man exhibition at Lefevre Gallery in 1943, which was highly acclaimed and lead to Herbert Read buying a work and writing the introduction to his next catalogue.

Georges Rouault, French 1871-1958 -Paysage anime, 1905; watercolour, gouache and pastel on paper, signed and dated lower left 'G Rouault 1905', 54 x 65 cm (ARR) Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 24th March 2004, lot 10; Peter Feuchtwanger, Munich & London, by whom acquired at the above sale and thence by descent to the present owner; Christie’s, London, Impressionist and Modern Works on Paper & Day Sale, 19th June 2019, lot 191 (unsold); Literature: Lionello Venturi, 'Georges Rouault', Paris, 1948, no.23 (illus.); B. Dorival & I. Rouault, 'Rouault, L'oeuvre peint, vol. I', Monte Carlo, 1988, no.375 Note: this early work demonstrates the artist's development of his unique style, imbuing the landscape with a mystical, almost religious feeling through his expressive handling of the watercolour and deep use of blue. Depicting a lone figure in a landscape with two birds sweeping through the sky, Rouault acknowledges the influence of Van Gogh on his work, in particular his 'Wheatfield with Crows', 1890 (Van Gogh Museum). This work is just one of the sixteen landscapes the artist painted between 1902 and 1909. 1905 was an important year for Rouault, exhibiting alongside his contemporaries Henri Matisse, Charles Camoin and Henri Manguin at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, where this group of artists was first called the Fauves. Rouault's works from 1905-06 are often seen as a climax of his early work in their expressive quality, paving the way to his almost iconographic later style. This would be highly influential on younger artists, in particular in Germany, in its liberation of colour and form and its transcendental qualities.
Lots 9-39 Property of the Late Reverend John Watson - Harry Phelan Gibb, British 1870-1948 - Floral still life with green apples, 1930 (with 'Urban scene' on the reverse); oil on board, signed and dated lower left 'Phelan Gibb 1930', 68.8 x 63.8 cm Provenance: The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson (1939-2019) Note: a memory of Reverend John Watson from Ted Few, I first met John Watson at the Olympia Winter Antiques Fair in 1994. I was wondering how to make my wares more appealing to the disappointing trickle of visitors when I became aware of a pensive, engaged man making a thorough examination of the stand before settling on a patinated plaster bust of a woman by Hamo Thornycroft which had come from the collection of Siegfried Sassoon at Heytesbury Manor. After a while we exchanged a few words and then he took his leave. The next afternoon he returned, had another cursory look at the rest of the stand, and then began to ask me very informed questions about the bust. I couldn't make him out. Was he an academic? He certainly knew his stuff. A prospective purchaser? His attire gave nothing away. He seemed slightly unworldly - not remotely acquisitive. And then once again he thanked me and left. When he returned the following day I thought he was frankly either mad or deadly serious, but as he handed me a cheque my curiosity was assuaged. Thus began a relationship which lasted a quarter of a century and grew in scope and interest. He had, in that first interaction, demonstrated so many of his essential characteristics. He was quiet, thoughtful, thorough, curious, enthusiastic, prudent, unassuming and educated; a man of enormous integrity and kindness with a sense of humour to boot. I learned that during his ministry he had bought pictures and sculpture from several of the top West End dealers but when he retired he was free to indulge his passion far more widely, buying initially from dealers, then additionally at auction and latterly extending his sphere of interest to global Works of Art, and even Modernism. He had an inbuilt radar which steered him towards the unusual, and a natural attraction for works of the finest quality, not to mention a nose for anything secondary or specious. And his passion for the New Sculpture Movement exemplified these preferences. It is a privilege to have been invited to advise his family and a pleasure to be working with Roseberys once again, dispersing the unique collection of a much missed collector and friend via a favourite saleroom which espouses so many of his values.
