Woman poet.- Hoole (Barbara) Poems, first edition, list of subscribers, contemporary ink ownership name and inscriptions on endpapers, contemporary calf, a little rubbed but overall a very clean and attractive copy, 8vo, Sheffield, by J. Montgomery, [1805]. *** A scarce collection of poetry by the writer Barbara Hoole (later Hofland) who supported herself and founded a school with funds from her publications. Rare in commerce: OCLC documents only 2 copies in libraries (BL and NLS). Having married the merchant T. Bradford Hoole, the author was shortly after widowed and left to support herself. She thence published her first collection, Poems with a staggering list of 2,000 subscribers. Funds from this work, which emphasizes female experiences and interiority, made it possible for her to launch and maintain a boarding school at Harrogate, where she could make education accessible to girls. She later remarried the artist Thomas Hofland and moved from Sheffield to London, where she settled into a career as a full time writer.

Mineralogy.- Agricola (Georgius) De re metallica libri XII, fourth Latin edition, woodcut title-vignette, 2 folding plates and c.270 illustrations attributed to Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch and Blasius Weffring, many full-page, e1 small paper-flaw hole affecting extreme upper corner of woodcut and a few letters to verso, few ff. with chips or tears to edges but no text loss, browned and foxed, often heavy, disbound, spine defective with many leaves loose, old blind-stamped vellum covers present but loose and very worn, [Wellcome II, p.18; cf.PMM 79, first edition], Basel, Emanuelis König, 1657; and a defective copy of Christoph Entzelt's De re metallica, rare 1557 edition, folio & 8vo (2); sold not subject to return. *** "The first systematic treatise on mining and metallurgy and one of the first technological books of modern times" (PMM). First published in 1556, this became the standard work on the subject for several generations of miners. The extraordinary quality and number of woodcuts give a wonderful graphic account of industrial activity in the mid-sixteenth century, eg. the use of waterpower, furnaces etc., and include a very early depiction of a railway.

Beerbohm (Max) The Works ... with a Bibliography by John Lane, paper spine label a little browned, covers lightly cockled, 1896; More, 1899; And Even Now, dust-jacket, spine a little browned, a few nicks to extremities, 1920; Around Theatres, 2 vol., [one of 780 sets], 1924, first editions, original cloth, spines a little faded, light rubbing to extremities; and 18 others by or relating to Beerbohm, including The Poet's Corner with 20 colour plates by Beerbohm, v.s. (23) *** Beerbohm came into the literary sphere in the 1890s and quickly found himself at the heart of its literary culture. His contribution to the first volume of The Yellow Books, an essay entitled 'A Defence Of Cosmetics' and written while he was still an undergraduate, earned him the title of decadent and gave the magazine a good deal of the notoriety on which its reputation rests. The first two mentioned are important titles from the Beerbohm canon, being his first regularly published title.
Kingsley's first novel.- Kingsley (Charles, novelist, Church of England clergyman, and controversialist, 1819-75) Autograph Letter signed to his publisher John Parker concerning his novel "Hypatia", 1p., 8vo, Eversley, [Hampshire], n.d., [1853], "I send you the copy of the next no. of Hypatia. If you think it too short, you can have more... . I have a proof of the first part of the Cap excluded last time; but send you the 2nd.", folds, tipped-in on card.*** Kingsley's "first historical novel, Hypatia (1853), subtitled New Foes with an Old Face. The new foes were J. H. Newman, now a Roman Catholic, and the other leaders of the Oxford Movement, such as E. B. Pusey; the old face imputed to them was that of the fanatical (and of course celibate) monks of fifth-century Alexandria who murdered the Neoplatonist philosopher Hypatia, and who Kingsley viewed as extreme and discreditable examples of the asceticism of the early church from which contemporary Catholic spirituality had drawn inspiration." - Oxford DNB.

Edward Coleridge acted as Assistant-Master of Eton from 1824 until 1850.

Farting.- [Hurtaut (Pierre Thomas Nicolas) & P.-J. Le Corvaisier.] L'Art de Péter; Essai Théori-Physique et Méthodique, engraved frontispiece, woodcut head-piece and initial, a few small stains, original wrappers, uncut, a little rubbed and soiled, short split to joint, 12mo, "Westphalie, Florent-Q, rue Pet-en-Gueule, au Soufflet", [i.e. Paris], 1776.*** Scarce printing of this amusing work on farting, first published in 1751. Displays of such later became a popular stage show in nineteenth century Paris, with one celebrated practitioner "Le Pétomane" being able to perform La Marseillaise.
Jesuit crimes.- Jarrigus (Pierre) A Further Discovery of the Mystery of Jesuitisme, 6 parts in 1, half-title (fore-margin chipped), light damp-staining and some weakness to fore-margin, light browning, upper hine broken, later vellum, a few chips, [Wing J488 or 489], R. The second is a fictional collection of letters describing what a young man might learn about conduct and society from an older woman. The third is the uncommon first appearance in French of David Hume’s Essay on Suicide and The Immortality of the Soul, which had both been suppressed by Hume himself for fear of prosecution.

Based at Snape Maltings it is now in its 75th year.

This is the 42mm Speedmaster, the movement is unseen. The watch currently winds and ticks but no guarantee on accuracy or timekeeping, some abrasions to plexi/glass, the bracelet and clasp have signs of wear.
