Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "British Columbia" Signed lower center. Original Mixed Media on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 17c Flags of Canada British Columbia stamp issued June 15, 1979. British Columbia is Canada's westernmost Province, with shorelines washed by the Pacific Ocean. European contact with British Columbia dates from a much earlier time than that of the other western Provinces because the discovery was made by sea. Sir Francis Drake sighted Vancouver Island in 1579, but no explorers landed on the coast until 1778, when Captain James Cook landed at Nootka Sound during the long search for the Northwest Passage. The furs that Cook's men took in trade from the Indians -- especially the sea otter pelts -- caused a sensation, and soon the waters off the coast of present day British Columbia were crowded with trading ships from England and the newly-founded United States. From the time of Cook's landing until 1795, the ownership of the British Columbia coast was in dispute. But in 1795, Spain gave up her claims to the Pacific coast lands north of her California colonies. British explorers had reached the Pacific by the overland route from Montreal in 1793, and British domination was clearly established. But that domination was not to bring widespread development. In 1855, the total European population was still only 774. That was changed by the discovery of gold in 1858. Suddenly, the population grew to more than 25,000, and the quiet trading center of the Hudson's Bay Company became a crowded frontier. The British Parliament took control of British Columbia in that same year, establishing it as a Crown Colony, and British Columbia joined the Dominion in 1871. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 15 in. Unframed. (B05360)

Shannon Stirnweis (American, B. 1931) "U.S. Marines Land on Saipan" Signed middle right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. The upper portion of this painting originally appeared as the cachet on the First Day Cover of the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c U.S. Marines Land on Saipan 1944 stamp issued June 15, 1994. The lower portion of this painting appeared as the stamp itself. The U.S. wanted Saipan, in the Marianas, as an advance base from which B-29 bombers could strike Japan's home islands. On June 15, 1944, hundreds of U.S. planes and warships bombarded the beaches. It took only 20 minutes for 8,000 Marines from the 2nd and 4th Divisions, commanded by Lieutenant General Holland M. "Howling Mad" Smith, to land. Although the Japanese fought back with fanatical banzai attacks, thousands more U.S. Marines were ashore by nightfall. On June 16, reinforcements from the Army's 27th Division were called in. By June 20, the remaining Japanese troops were trapped, but their defensive positions in caves and hills made progress over the next two weeks difficult. On July 9, Saipan was finally declared secured. Image Size: 25.75 x 16.75 in. Overall Size: 28.75 x 18.75 in. Unframed. (B14720)

Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Mirage 2000C" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Mirage 2000C stamp issued November 10, 1995. The French Mirage 2000 first flew in March 1976. The only combat use to date occurred during the Persian Gulf War. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14897)

Lot 429

Basil Smith (British, B. 1925). "The Cow Jumped over the Moon" Original Mixed Media painting on Hot Press Illustration Board. Signed lower left. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Westminster Collector's Society 20p The Man on the Moon stamp issued February 6, 1990. The Moon, Earth's satellite and closest astral neighbor, has been a source of inspiration to poets and dreamers throughout the centuries. Its craters and mountains were first studied by astronomer Galileo, but weren't actually mapped until 1837 by Johann von M?dler. Because of their eerie resemblance to the human face, lunar spots have afforded an especially rich subject for the play of human fancy. Perhaps the oldest myth relating to the man in the moon originates in the Old Testament. In the Book of Numbers, a man is caught gathering sticks on the Sabbath, and as an example to mankind, he is condemned to stand forever on the moon with a bundle on his back. Chaucer and Shakespeare also allude to the man in the moon as an individual who was banished to the lunar surface as punishment. Even so, people throughout the centuries have seen the man in the moon as a more benevolent presence in the night sky, evoking the mysteries of the universe and of love. Many nursery rhymes have also been inspired by the moon. One credits the man in the moon with visiting earth: "The Man in the Moon came down too soon and asked his way to Norwich..." and another popular nursery rhyme conjures up a cow jumping over the moon. Image Size: 6 x 7 in. Overall Size: 9 x 10 in. Unframed. (B12343)

Basil Smith (British, B. 1925). "The Laughing Policeman" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media/Watercolor painting on Hot Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Westminster Collector's Society 20p Laughing Policeman stamp issued February 6, 1990. In 1829, British statesman Robert Peel succeeded in reforming the criminal laws of Britain and established the London Police Force. Its members, known as Bobbies or Peelers, were viewed with suspicion from the very beginning. There was much opposition at the time from the laboring class because policemen were seen as enforcers of an unjust and restrictive society. With their tall hats, stiff uniforms, and menacing billy clubs, the stern-faced Bobbies were thought to be inept, surly, and decidedly humorless. So, in some respects, the term "laughing policeman" is an ironic misnomer. Policemen were rarely seen laughing. Such light-hearted behavior would be considered unseemly and might cause a policeman to lose his job. The only place it appeared safe for a policeman to laugh was on stage in the Music Hall. An entertainer who got his start in the Music Hall and who was known anonymously as the "Laughing Policeman," was celebrated for singing a lively comic song broken up by fits of raucous laughter. Indeed, there is nothing funny about many of the crimes policemen are required to enforce. But for smaller offenses like parking violations or jaywalking, policemen have been known to have a sense of humor. Image Size: 6 x 7 in. Overall Size: 9 x 10 in. Unframed. (B12344)

Lot 431

Charles J. Berger (American, 1922 - 2012) "Peace Bridge/America" Signed lower left. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for Peace Bridge issued August 4, 1977. In large measure, the 4400-foot-long steel bridge that spans the Niagara River from Fort Porter, Buffalo, New York, to Fort Erie, Ontario, -- where the final shots of the War of 1812 were exchanged -- is a monument to an almost-forgotten patriot of the early United States, Richard Rush. Born the son of famed physician Benjamin Rush, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, the younger Rush was the U. S. Assistant Secretary of State following the War of 1812. A spillover from a struggle between Britain and France, it left in its aftermath a feeling of great suspicion between Canada and the United States. Nervous citizens on both sides of the 3,989-mile-long border called for a wall of fortresses. And Canadians warned that they planned to gird the Great Lakes with a fleet of warships. Rush expressed his fears that a border manned by armed soldiers and sailors could only lead to future hostilities, and suggested that the border remain unprotected -- a revolutionary idea! The Canadians vowed they would agree not to defend the border if the United States would agree as well. Rush was eventually successful in convincing the United States government to place no forts, no ships, no sailors, no soldiers on the long border. To this day the world's longest undefended border and the fifty-year-old Peace Bridge stand as a testament to the fact that two great nations can live together in peace. Image Size: 11.5 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 18 in. Unframed. (B05477)

Lot 31

George Catlin (1796 - 1872) "View of West Point" Watercolor/pen/ink on paper. Provenance: Sotheby's lot 47 (11/21/2016) (Estimate: $15,000-$25,000) When Catlin was 8 years old, his mother had been captured by Indians. Therefore, his early life was influenced by family legends and frontier guests. He was educated at home, was outdoors oriented, and collected Indian relics. In 1817, he began studying law in Litchfield, Connecticut and at the same time teaching himself to paint portraits. He practiced law in Luzerne, Pennsylvania until 1823 when he moved to Philadelphia to devote himself to portrait painting, as a friend of Rembrandt Peale, Thomas Sully, and John Neagle. His portraits up to 1829 included New York and Washington politicians. His Constitutional Convention painting in 1829 contained 115 figures. In 1824, Catlin had seen a "delegation of dignified Indians from the wilds of the West, tinted and tasseled off exactly for the painter's palette." This and his background resolved him "to use my art and so much of the labor of my future life as might be required in rescuing from oblivion the looks and customs of the vanishing races of native man in America." He began in 1830 in St. Louis as the first artist of real stature to paint the tribes on the lower Missouri. In 1831 he traveled up the Platte River, and in 1832 headed up the Missouri to Fort Union. From 1834 to 1836 he painted among the Indians in the summers and in the winters he would return East to earn funds for the coming summer. From 1829 to 1838 he painted his collection of about 600 Indian portraits and sketches of the Indian civilization including exactly how they lived. The collection was offered for sale to the Congress but was not accepted. It was exhibited in the US and in Europe between 1837 and 1852, was taken as security for a loan, and eventually donated to the National Museum in Washington DC. Sight Size: 11.5 x 18 in. Overall Framed Size: in. Framed behind glass.

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Great Britain's Royal Air Force was created in 1918 when the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service were officially combined. In 1986, Great Britain celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the reorganization of the RAF into the commands which carried the service through its most challenging years. In honor of this anniversary, Great Britain issued five stamps featuring five of Great Britain's greatest fighting planes and men who helped build the RAF into the force it is today. This artwork honors Lord Trenchard, the Father of the Royal Air Force, a modern British fighter plane, the Tornado and historic British aircraft. Image Size: 11.75 x 14 in.
