Plesch Collection [label]Mrs. Christian R. Holmes Collection [label]A London private collection amassed between the 1970s and 1990s and thence by descent. The combination of the gui and bi into a single object was part of the interest in archaism which arose from the Song Dynasty onwards. In the words of Jessica Rawson, who illustrates a Ming example Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, p.92, fig.88, 'although no such combination of disc and pointed blade had existed, the attempt at the combination and careful rendering of the surface ornament indicate concern, if displaced, for historical accuracy' (p. 91). The Guyu tupu, compiled in 1176 by imperial commission, is the among the first such books on ancient jades to illustrate a guibi. This jade was collected by two important 20th Century collectors. Mrs. Christian R. Holmes (1871 – 1941) collected widely and lent pieces for major exhibitions of Chinese art held at the Royal Academy in London in 1935 and 1936. Professor Peter Hariolf Plesch (1918 - 2013), doctor to Albert Einstein, was a member of the Oriental Ceramic Society and known for his fascination with Chinese glass. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

James McArdell after Sir Joshua Reynolds, mezzotint, 'Portrait of John Earl of Rothes, Lord Leslie and Bambreigh..', 1763, sheet overall 50.5 x 36cm General John Leslie, 10th Earl of Rothes KT (1698 – 10 December 1767) was a senior British Army officer who became Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Irish Army between 1758 and 1767.The earls of Rothes were a major landowning family in central Fife who had risen to prominence in the Restoration period and traditionally held the hereditary sheriffdom of the county. The 10th Earl had a successful military career, seeing his first service alongside his father fighting for the Hanoverians during the Jacobite Rising of 1715. He succeeded his father in 1722, assuming his post as governor of Stirling Castle and the following year was elected as a Representative Peer for the first time.In 1732, Rothes was appointed commander of the 25th Regiment of Foot and was promoted to Brigadier-General in 1739, Major-General in 1743, and Lieutenant-General in 1747. He fought at Dettingen and lead the first cavalry charge at Rocoux in October 1745 as colonel of the 2nd Troup of Horse Grenadier Guards. From 1751, the remainder of Rothes’ military career was chiefly in Ireland where he was made governor of Duncannon Fort in 1754, an Irish Privy Councillor in 1756, and Commander of the Forces in 1758.The earl was re-elected as a Representative Peer in 1727, 1747, 1754 and 1761, and appointed a Knight of the Thistle in March 1753. He rebuilt the family seat at Leslie House, Fife, after substantial damage by fire, and died there in 1767.
William Skelton after Sir William Beechey, engraving, 'His Royal Highness Frederick, Duke of York and Albany ...', visible sheet 41.5 x 31cm, and an accompanying engraving, 'Field Marshall His Royal Highness Prince Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and Tiviotdale ...', 41 x 30.5cm, matching frames Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany KG GCB GCH (1763 – 1827) was the second son of George III, King of the United Kingdom and Hanover, and his consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A soldier by profession, from 1764 to 1803 he was Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück in the Holy Roman Empire. From the death of his father in 1820 until his own death in 1827, he was the heir presumptive to his elder brother, George IV, in both the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Kingdom of Hanover.Frederick was thrust into the British Army at a very early age and was appointed to high command at the age of thirty, when he was given command of a notoriously ineffectual campaign during the War of the First Coalition, a continental war following the French Revolution. Later, as Commander-in-Chief during the Napoleonic Wars, he oversaw the reorganisation of the British Army, establishing vital structural, administrative and recruiting reforms for which he is credited with having done "more for the army than any one man has done for it in the whole of its history".Ernest Augustus (1771 – 1851) was King of Hanover from 20 June 1837 until his death in 1851. As the fifth son of King George III of the United Kingdom and Hanover, he initially seemed unlikely to become a monarch, but none of his elder brothers had a legitimate son. When his older brother William IV, who ruled both kingdoms, died in 1837, his niece Victoria inherited the British throne under British succession law, while Ernest succeeded in Hanover under Salic law, which barred women from the succession, thus ending the personal union between Britain and Hanover that had begun in 1714.
Pieter Stevens Van Gunst and Leers after Adriaen Van der Werf, engraving, 'Johannes Baro de Churchill, Dux et Comes du Marlborough ...', visible sheet 62 x 40cm General John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, 1st Prince of Mindelheim, 1st Count of Nellenburg, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, KG, PC (1650 – 1722) was an English soldier and statesman whose career spanned the reigns of five monarchs. From a gentry family, he served first as a page at the court of the House of Stuart under James, Duke of York, through the 1670s and early 1680s, earning military and political advancement through his courage and diplomatic skill.Churchill's role in defeating the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685 helped secure James on the throne, but he was a key player in the military conspiracy that led to James being deposed during the Glorious Revolution. Rewarded by William III with the title Earl of Marlborough, persistent charges of Jacobitism led to his fall from office and temporary imprisonment in the Tower of London. William recognised his abilities by appointing him as his deputy in Southern Netherlands before the War of the Spanish Succession in 1701, but not until the accession of Queen Anne in 1702 did he secure his fame and fortune.
Giuseppe Longhi after Antoine-Jean Gros, engraving, 'Bonaparte at the Battle of Arcole', published 1798, visible sheet 48 x 32.5cm The painting presents a three-quarter-length image of Bonaparte, holding the flagstaff of the Armée d'Italie in his left hand and his sword in his right – on its blade is the inscription Bonaparte, Armée d'Italie. He is dressed in the dark blue trousers and tunic of a general of the First French Republic, with a gold-embroidered red collar. Beneath them he wears a white shirt and a black neckscarf. He also wears a gold-fringed tricolor cummerbund and a square-buckled belt bearing his empty scabbard. The background suggests the smoke of battle, with a few houses in the distance on the left. The land bordering the river is painted in dark tones, with a smoking cannonball still visible. The painting was commissioned by Joséphine, who was accompanying Napoleon in his Italian Campaign. Painted in Naples in 1796. Napoleon could reportedly not sit still for extended periods of time as a model for the portrait, Joséphine solved this by allowing Napoleon to sit in her lap and embracing him for the duration required by Gros. The painting passed through the collections of Napoleon himself and of Napoleon III before being sequestered after the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870. It was then reacquired by Napoleon III's wife Eugénie de Montijo in 1871, who eight years later gave it to the Louvre. It passed to the château de Compiègne in 1901, then finally the Palace of Versailles in 1938.
William Say after Sir William Beechey, mezzotint, 'Vice Admiral The Right Honourable Sir George Cockburn GCB', visible sheet 73 x 43.5cm Rear-Admiral Sir George Cockburn, 1772-1853Cockburn was one of Nelson's talented frigate captains in the Mediterranean in the 1790s but is best known for his actions during the Anglo-American War of 1812. In 1814 he accompanied the joint naval and military force under Major-General Ross, which after the battle of Bladensburg seized the city of Washington for 24 hours. The public buildings were burnt, including the President's mansion. Its shell had to be painted white on reconstruction to hide the damage and it subsequently became more generally known as the White House. Cockburn provided support and guidance to the army throughout the campaign having become familiar with operations on shore. Ross gave credit to Cockburn for the idea of the attack on Washington although it was part of the strategy of Sir Alexander Cochrane who had become Commander-in-Chief on the North American station early in 1814. Cockburn also accompanied Ross in the advance against Baltimore and was with him during the skirmish on 12 September when Ross was killed. Cockburn's other widely known claim to fame is as the man charged with conveying Napoleon to exile in St Helena in 1815 (in his flagship, the 'Northumberland'), where he remained briefly as Governor and saw the ex-Emperor settled at Longwood, the house built for him there. He subsequently became an MP and was commander-in-chief on the North American station, 1833-36. From 1841 to 1846 he was First Sea Lord and the Navy's well considered adoption of steam technology and other reforms owed a great deal to his firm guidance, which always put professional standards above political considerations. He reached the rank of Admiral of the Fleet in 1851and briefly inherited the family baronetcy the following year.
Valentine Green after Lemuel Francis Abbott, mezzotint, 'The Right Honourable Alexander Lord Bridport K.B., Admiral of the White', published by Abbott 1796, visible sheet 51 x 38.5cm Admiral Alexander Hood, 1st Viscount Bridport, KB (1726 – 1814), of Cricket St Thomas, Somerset, was an officer of the British Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars.Shown pointing towards a naval action in the left background - the engagement with Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse off Port l'Orient in June 1795. In addition to the Star of KB awarded in 1788, he wears the Gold Medal and chain awarded after the 'Glorious First of June' action in 1794
Stocks & Sharpe after Daniel Maclise R.A. (1806-1870), pair of line engravings, 'The meeting of Wellington and Blücher at La Belle Alliance on the field of Waterloo' and 'The Death of Nelson on the Victory, Battle of Trafalgar 1805', published by the Arts Union 1874-5, 29 x 112cm The Meeting of Wellington and Blücher after the Battle of Waterloo is a monumental wall painting by Irish painter Daniel Maclise, completed in 1861. It depicts the moment towards the end of the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815, when the commanders of the allied British and Prussian armies, the Duke of Wellington and Marshal Blücher, met near La Belle Alliance. Measuring 3.68 by 13.92 metres (12.1 ft × 45.7 ft), it is displayed in the Royal Gallery at the Palace of Westminster. The work was commissioned in 1858, to decorate the newly reconstructed Palace of Westminster. Maclise first completed a full-size cartoon as a preparatory work in 1859, which is in the collection of the Royal Academy of Arts, and the painting was completed in 1861. It was intended to be a part of a series of 18 paintings by Maclise to decorate the Royal Gallery, but only two large panels were finished. The other large panel, The Death of Nelson, completed in 1865, depicts the death of Admiral Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 (a full-size sketch for the Death of Nelson was purchased by the Walker Art Gallery in 1892). Prince Albert was one of the principal supporters of the project, but progress with the project was slow, and the remaining 16 pictures were cancelled after Albert's death in 1861.
