In 1904, Simpson attended Clifton College, Bristol, and in 1908 he went to Trinity College, Cambridge (his father’s college) and read Botany and Zoology graduating BA with a third in Natural Sciences Tripos in 1911. Simpson was a keen mechanic, motorcyclist and motorist and in 1915 he joined the Red Cross as a motorcyclist and was sent to the Hospital at Poperinghe in Belgium. In November 1915 he enlisted in the Army Transport Corps and rose through the ranks being promoted to Captain and served until 1920 when he was discharged. After the war, Simpson went to live with his father at ‘Maesbury’ in Bournemouth, who had retired in 1916 and moved to Bournemouth from Yorkshire as he had family there and after his father’s death Simpson lived at ‘Maesbury’ until his death. In September 1930, the Colonial Office offered him a job as Systematic Botanist in the Agricultural Department at the Peradeniya Botanic Garden, Ceylon, on a wage of £720 per annum and a pension. He bought his beloved car, the Alvis 12/50 for £395 which he took to Ceylon and was still driving his car until his death in 1973. The post ended abruptly in 1932 as they abolished his post and he returned to England in September 1932 via the Far East, Japan and the United States of America. Simpson then settled at ‘Maesbury’ and as his family were wealthy, he never sought paid work again. He spent his time collecting, indexing and arranging his Herbarium. He travelled much in order to collect specimens and map the flora of various countries, such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia (Simpson had a knowledge of Arabic), Ireland (where he botanised Ireland with various others) and Jordan – all in his Alvis car which had a plant press in the boot. Simpson died on 29 August 1974, just short of his 84th birthday from a heart condition. On the death his Herbarium included 5,800 sheets from Egypt, 1,580 from the Sudan, 400 from Jordan, 600 from Morocco, 800 from Algeria, 500 from Tunisia, 600 from Cirenaica, 18,100 of British and Irish plants and 1,300 of Continental European plants which he collected from 1903-1973. The Sudan, Egypt and Jordan collections were deposited to The Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew and the rest to the Natural History Museum. His main collections of botanical books were presented to the Botany School at Cambridge, The Natural History Museum, Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew and Reading University. His father Reverend James Douglas Simpson owned Silver Eagle TC 19.82 Mayfair Drophead Coupé LJ 7368 from new on 30 March 1933 until his death in 1936, when it passed to his son Norman Douglas Simpson (the botanist), Maesbury, 3 Cavendish Road, Bournemouth BH1 1QX, until his death in 1974. SHARPHAM PARK ORGANIC SPELT HAMPER SET WITH PAIR OF ANTLERS comprising: a white pot lid and cover with Sharpham Park logo, artisan and white pasta, bran flakes, afternoon blend tea, British walnuts, pearled spelt, Roger Saul 'A delicious collection of recipes from the champion of spelt' Mark Hix, a British recipe magazine and a Sharpham Park brochure The pair of antlers were naturally shed from one of Sharpham's stags at their organic deer park in Somerset.Sharpham Park is a 300 acre historic park near Glastonbury on the edge of the Somerset Levels, dating back to the Bronze Age. The first known reference to Sharpham (Scerpham) is a grant by King Edwig to the Thegn (lord or squire) Aethelwold in 957. Sharpham then passed in and out of the hands of the Abbots of Glastonbury for the next 200 years. In 1191 King John bequeathed the park to the Abbots of Glastonbury by placing his bejewelled gauntlet upon the Abbey alter.By 1300 the Abbot enclosed Sharpham as a deer park with an oak and chestnut paling fence of some 4 miles circumference with red deer. The park would also have had a rich variety of farming and husbandry with tenants keeping cattle and sheep, whilst the monks would have farmed rabbits, hawked and produced a variety of crops which would no doubt, have included spelt, providing food for the guests of the Abbot of Glastonbury's table. In November 1539 Henry VIII's commissioners visited the Abbey in the final stages of the dissolution of the monasteries. They proceeded to Abbot Whiting's favourite manor, Sharpham Park, where they found him in his kitchen. From there they took him to be tried for treason and thence to be hung, drawn and quartered upon Glastonbury Tor.Since those troubled times there have been a number of notable owners, amongst whom are the judge Sir Henry Gould, the novelist Henry Fielding and the palaeontologist Thomas Hawkins. As a farm it was known as the finest in Somerset in the 1880's and employed 27 men and boys with shire horses. Nearby in the early 1900's Glastonbury lake village was discovered dating back to the Iron Age and here carbonised spelt grains were found, which would have been used in a leavened bread, as this was on a Lake, the nearest farming land would have been Sharpham, speculating that spelt has been grown here for well over 2000 years. In 2003 Roger Saul, founder of Mulberry, bought the land around the family home and embarked on restoring what was a run-down dairy farm into an organic mixed economy farm. He created the Sharpham Park brand and set out to bring spelt back into the British diet. He restored red deer to the park, brought back rare breeds, planted 300 walnut trees and created an organic rotation scheme to protect the environment and the soil, whilst being as productive as possible.

Soon after the family moved to various residences in rural England eventually buying Warren House, Bodfari, Flintshire (Hywel). Following his exploits as a pioneering aviator and racing driver his flying experience was put to good use. During the First World War he represented the British Government as an Admiralty Test Pilot at the Curtiss Aviation Company, Buffalo, U.S.A. An accident in January 1918 precluded further aviation activities and soon after he involved himself in the field of ornithology and oology. Quite early on he took up residence in Rhyl, at Holmfield, 21 West Kimmel Street where Mrs E.M. Parry (first names unknown to me) became his housekeeper, the start of a relationship which lasted for the rest of his life. By about 1928 the months of April to September- the bird breeding season-were devoted to bird watching visiting many of the Welsh islands such as Puffin, The Skerries, Bardsey, and Grassholm in one of his boats. He rented Puffin Island and studied the seabirds. Published a paper in The Oologists’ Record of 1st June 1929 about his observations on this island. His wealth came from the family Brewing interests in Grimsby of which he had no interest whatsoever. There was a Hewitt Trust which was set up by his grandfather. The terms of the trust were that only a male could inherit. When the brewery and other property was sold about 1933 Vivian Hewitt being the sole heir was the recipient of a vast fortune in the order of one and a quarter million pounds, so his already large income was swelled to the tune of some £50,000 a year from that source (Hywel). With his wealth Vivian could buy virtually anything which took his fancy. He became a very valued customer of Spink and Son of London who sold him rare stamps, gold coins and valuable objects d’art. They were to become an important conduit for the sale of Great Auk eggs and specimens. In the early 1960’s he became a tax exile and lived for much of the year at his house Mount Vernon, Nassau, Bahamas with Mrs Parry and appears to have abandoned his vast collection of eggs, some say half a million others a million, at his Anglesey property of Bryn Aber, Cemlyn under the control of Jack Parry. It was not until he was nearly seventy when he chose Nassau as his permanent home. Many of his personal and most prized possessions had been shipped out, and he continued to occupy many hours of the day dealing with his stamp and coin collections and even adding to them. Naturally, some of his engineering acquisitions proved too troublesome for transit and his collection of birds’ skins and eggs were too vast to move. However, the mounted specimens of Great Auks, as well as the eggs were too precious not to be under his surveillance and were constantly admired and studied. Hewitt died in a friend’s house at Cemlyn, Anglesey on the 18thJuly 1965. He had been in failing health in Nassau for some considerable time having been diagnosed with a carcinoma of the oesophagus and returned to Wales for treatment in Liverpool a short time before he died. See Fuller Errol - The Great Auk book, page 390 for further information small hole to left side of the box.
