Two silver Masonic jewels, the first a William IV set square and compass pendant by Joseph Wilmore, Birmingham 1831, 8.5cm (3 1/4in) long excluding the swivel loop; the second formed as crossed quills, maker`s mark J.B struck twice only, with a suspension ring on chains, engraved Lodge 189, 13cm (5in) long. The second maker`s mark probably for John Brough who entered this mark in 1807.
Two early 18th century dated gold and rock crystal buckles, each with a two-spike tongue and anchor chape, the first rectangular and inset with gold thread over woven hair, Elizabeth 1710 with cherub heads and love hearts, the frame 3.1cm (1 1/4in) long; the second rectangular with one end curved, inset with gold thread over woven hair, Elizabeth 1720 with cherub heads, the frame 3.9cm (1 1/2in) long. The Victoria & Albert Museum have a memorial buckle similar dated 1728 (no. M.136-1975).
Two 19th century hardstone fob seals, the first seal with a cornelian matrix, carved with the shield with crest and motto for Sir Francis Burdett 1770-1844, 5th baronet of Bramcote, Warwickshire, the shield, augmented by the red hand of Ulster for a baronet, is of its ancient form, but at a later date its two horizontal bars were charged with six martlets. In pretence to denote his wife Lady Sophia Burdett status as heiress is the shield of Coutts, to a reeded and scrolled mount; the other seal with an initialled panel to a pierced scrolled setting. Sir Francis Burdett was married in 1793 to Sophia, 3rd daughter and co heir of Thomas Coutts, banker of London. Francis Burdett was born in 1770 and succeeded his grandfather, Sir Robert, in 1797 to the baronetcy created in 1618. He became a well-known radical Whig politician, serving as MP for Boroughbridge, Westminster and North Wiltshire where he resided at Ramsbury Manor. After his wife Lady Burdett died on the 13th January 1844, Sir Robert could not foresee any future for himself, and decided to stop eating, he died ten days later, and Sir Robert and Lady Burdett were buried on the same day in 1844 in the chancel of Ramsbury Church. Survived by one son and eventual heir, Colonel Robert Burdett, as well as five daughters. Their fifth daughter, Angela Burdett-Coutts, achieved later distinction as the richest woman in Britain and a noteworthy philanthropist. The baronetcy became extinct in 1951.
A south Staffordshire enamel drum shape bougie box, circa 1770, with a funnel-topped cover and ring handle, painted with rustic views within raised gilded scrolls against a grass green ground with raised white dots, gilt metal mounts, 6cm (2 1/2in) high. Provenance: The Hon. Mrs. Nellie Ionides Collection, Sotheby`s London, 17th June 1990, Lot 63. Mrs. Ionides noted that this was the first English enamel in her celebrated collection and that it had been given to her in 1903 by Mr. H. Levy.
A pair of late George III silver wine coolers and collars by John & Thomas Settle, Sheffield 1817, embossed overall with bold foliate scrolls and rocaille work, on pedestal bases, the collars numbered 1 and 2, the liners of old Sheffield plate, the coolers and collars engraved with two crests, engraved beneath Virginia Winn from Webb- July 10th 1945, 26cm (10 1/4in) high, the coolers and collars 4079g (131.2 oz). Engraved with the crest of a griffin`s head from a mural coronet recorded for AMOND, BASQUER, BISHOP, ESSEX, GILBERT, LOCKSMITH, MOSS, REAY, STOCKDALE, THOMLINSON, UMFREVILLE, WESTCOMBE and WHEELER accompanied by a demi-lion holding a Lochaber axe possibly for MURRAY. Provenance: The wine coolers were a 35th anniversary gift from William Webb Wheeler, Jr. to his wife, Virginia (nee Burnes), and are by direct descent to the current vendors. The first Wheeler who appears on the family tree is Levi, born in 1796, next is David (1823-1861), followed by William Webb Sr., then William Webb Wheeler Jr., William Webb Wheeler III and William Webb Wheeler IV. William Webb Wheeler, Junior`s father owned the mercantile business which Jr. inherited and ran through the crash of 1929, and was renowned for building up an important library. Virginia Winn (Wynne) Burnes Wheeler was the daughter of Lewis Calvin Burnes, president of the Burnes National Bank and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The original immigrant to America in 1771 changed his name from Peter Burness to Burnes.
A sapphire and diamond dress ring by Jean Schlumberger, the central cut cornered step cut sapphire weighing 30.95 carats, claw set within a pave set brilliant cut diamond mount with beaded accents, above pave set brilliant cut diamond shoulders, approximately 3.00 carats total, signed Schlumbreger on a plaque under the gallery, the shank stamped with the maker`s mark of the atelier Henri Picq, finger size K 1/2. Born in 1907, Jean Schlumberger has become recognised as one of the master jewellery designers of the 20th century. He began designing costume jewellery for Elsa Schiaparelli in Paris in the late 1930s, and gathered around him such leading socialites and style icons as the Duchess of Kent, Daisy Fellowes and Diana Vreeland, from whom he received his first jewellery design commissions. After the end of the Second World War, Schlumberger opened a workshop in New York, followed by a boutique in Paris in 1950. In 1956 he was invited to become the Vice President of jewellery design at Tiffany & Co., making his name synonymous with Tiffany`s jewellery design. The atelier of Henri Picq came to prominence in the early 20th century as the Parisian workshop that produced some of Cartier`s finest jewels, including the `Tutti Frutti` jewels of the 1920s.
Five George III silver wine labels or bottle tickets, the first crescent shape with a threaded border by Thomas Phipps & Edward Robinson, London 1790, engraved SHERRY, 4.3cm long; a pair of lozenge shape by John Hutson, London 1791, with bright-cut borders, pierced SHERRY and LISBON, 4.7cm long; an oval example by Thomas Halford, maker`s mark only, with a bright-cut border, engraved LISBON, 4.5cm long; and canted-rectangular by Peter, Ann & William Bateman, London 1800, engraved HOLLANDS, 3.4cm long. Thomas Halford registered this mark in August 1807.
Two Meissen figurines first modelled 1765, these examples late 19th / early 20th century, comprising a barefoot girl feeding a group of poultry and chicks, a shallow basket of corn held beneath her left arm, blue crossed swords and impressed 2814 to base, assembler number 73 scribed to base rim, 4½in. (11.4cm) high; the second figure of a barefoot boy feeding a group of geese from a bag of foliage, blue crossed swords, incised C41, impressed assembler`s mark 65 to base, 5¼in. (13.3cm.) high. (2)
Two Worcester first period tea cups vertical ribbed bodies with blue floral sprigs, solid crescent mark to bases, 2½in. (6.3cm.) high; together with a first period Worcester teapot of concave lobed form, blue floral decoration, hollow crescent to base, missing lid, 4 x 5in. (10.2 x 12.2cm.). (3)
A Worcester first period teapot late 18th century, ovoid form, flat lid decorated with three floral sprigs and a bud finial, blue and white geometric pattern to upper edge, fruit and flowers decorating the body and spout, plain scroll handle, filled crescent mark to base, 5¾in. (14.4cm) high.
Hedley Le Noury (British, 20th century) A Sea Battle during the English civil war between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists off Castle Cornet, Guernsey signed and dated 1983 lower right 23½ x 35½in. (59.5 x 90.25cm.) * During the English Civil War, Guernsey sided with the Parliamentarians, while Jersey remained Royalist. Guernsey`s decision was mainly related to the higher proportion of Calvinists and other reformed churches, as well as Charles the First`s refusal to take up the case of some Guernsey seamen who had been captured by the Barbary corsairs.
A British First World War leather pistol holster in dark brown leather with brass fittings, stamped `G. Battle 1918`, 11in. (28cm.) long. * Condition: In very good condition. Good colour and polish to leather - a few small dings and scratches which have been polished-in. Brass fittings complete and securely attached.
