A 1950s gem set clip brooch by Franco Cannilla for Masenza, the textured gold figure with a lattice basket above his head filled with cascading carved emerald leaves, cabochon rubies and sapphires and brilliant cut diamonds, signed Cannilla Masenza - Roma, 6.2cm long. Franco Cannilla (1911-1984) was a sculptor from Sicily who was approached by Mario Masenza at the end of the 1940`s to collaborate in creating artists jewels for Masenza`s shop in the heart of Rome. The collaboration between Cannilla and Masenza continued until the late 1960s. Cannilla first exhibited his jewellery in Milan in 1949, and his work was featured at many other international jewellery exhibitions, including the International Exhibition of Jewellery in London in 1961. Mid 20th Century Roman Artist Jewels. Mario Masenza (1913-1985) came from an illustrious family of Italian jewellers. The Masenza family opened their jewellery shop on the fashionable via del Corso in Rome in 1924, located in the Palazzo Fiano, and included the Italian Royal Family amongst their client list. Mario Masenza inherited the business in the immediate post war years, and sought to bring completely fresh ideas to the Italian jewellery market. His mantra was to offer stunningly original jewels to his clients, which had been created in collaboration with emerging young Italian artists. From the late 1940s, throughout the 1950s and in to the 1970s, Masenza`s gallery and workshops became the meeting place for artists and collectors, where painters and sculptors such as Franco Cannilla, and the Basadella brothers, Afro and Mirko, (artists amongst what was to become known as the `School of Rome`) could experiment with materials and their imaginations to create highly individualistic artists jewels. Many of the pieces were exhibited at international design exhibitions in Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States. Literature: `L`Arte Del Gioiello e Il Gioiello D`Artista Dal `900 Ad Oggi` (Exhibition Catalogue, 10th March - 10th June 2001, Museo Degli Argenti, Firenze), pp 303 - 312 for an article by Maria Cristina Bergesio `Masenza, Fumanti, Montebello: Interpretti De Gioiello D`Autore In Italia`, for a commentary on the collaborations between Mario Masenza and the artists who created his jewellery.
