H. Howard (early 19th century) - Portrait of George Sutherland Oil on canvas 54 x 44cm (21 1/4 x 17 1/4in) Inscription on old label verso reads: 'Portrait of George Sutherland by H. Howard, pupil of Lawrence. Selected and shown as Howard's best child picture in Paris and the International Exhibition in South Kensington in 1882. Sutherland was drowned as a 'middy' on his first voyage.'
A 19th century oak silver chest owned by Lady Sophia Louisa Goldsmid (1819-1908) , with black painted metal binding and twin handles, bearing a plaque 'Mrs Sophia Goldsmid - No 2', and maker's plaque which reads 'M Emanuel, Silversmith, 5 Hanover Square, London', 62 x 84 x 52cm. Lady Louisa Sophia Goldsmid was known for advocacy of women's higher education. She was part of the Governesses Benevolent Institution and helped create Queens College, Harley St, which was the first place in the country that allowed women to undertake higher education. In 1859 she became treasurer of the Langham Place Circle, which was held in her house at 13 Portman Square, where she hosted Emily Davies. They both took a leading role in persuading Cambridge University to create women graduates. She was also involved in the fight for women's suffrage.
