Three old albums of Christmas greeting cards ' some dating to Victorian times and a few personally signed by members of the Royal family (see the first three of our 14 photographs.) The albums contain approximately 732 old cards of various sizes from decades of yesteryear, all meticulously inserted into the albums with removable corners, so the cards are easily extracted. Four of the cards are signed by Princess Louise in the 1880s. She was the daughter of Edward VII, and later the Duchess of Fife. Another is signed by Princess Victoria, who was also Edward's daughter. There is a Christmas card with envelope signed and dedicated by Princess Alice Mary of Albany, a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria., and another signed by Queen Alexandra, Edward's VII's wife and consort. A number of the cards are marked with the prices paid by the late owner, which appear to range from £2 to £5 each. There may be figures outside of this range, but the combined figure clearly totted up over the years. These albums come from the same collection as the 14 albums of Christmas-related old postcards which appeared in our July sale. There are various publishers, but a number are by Raphael Tuck, the prolific postcard publisher. A number of the cards are silk. One card featured in one of the images has sterling silver charms attached to it for a Christmas pudding, including a donkey, pig and horseshoe. One card appears to have a penny red stamp attached to it. A Charles Dickens souvenir card is another which catches the eye. The albums are delightful and well worth a view to fully appreciate their charms.

Of the standard cards, there are ten cards of Bedford from the same Valentine's series (picture 10); whilst the other photos show the best of the loose cards ' with one photo including three cards of postmen/postwoman interest, artist signed glamour cards, two Margaret Tarrant, a lovely Holmfirth flood scene and a Gannets breeding ground. Another photo shows 14 cards including street scenes a llama giving children a ride in a cart, an unidentified shopfront and mills at Stantonbury and New Bradwell; and another photo has eight cards including the Kings Head Inn, a British policeman on duty in Shanghai, a classroom, Arlington post office, a. Timperley's shop with an Olney (Bucks) 1911 postmark; and lovely photographic views of Hartwell (Northants) and Milton Ernest (Bucks). Finally, the last photo shows other contents from the shoebox ' including a beermat postcard, Northampton Court card, first day covers, envelopes with old French stamps and a number of unused 4d England Winners of the 1966 World Cup stamps. The postcards in the shoebox are in a very mixed condition ' a very few with faults such as big creases of corners missing, others near mint, but most in between.
A relatively small ' but impressive ' collection of 40 real photographic standard size postcards of the Royal Naval and Military Tournament at Olympia (London) ' all published by Gale & Polden Ltd, which had offices in Portsmouth, London, Aldershot and Chatham. Some of the cards show the Army Service Corps display, heroes of the British military pageant, displays by girls and boys from the RN School at Greenwich, a naval gymnastic display and army gymnastics display. One of the cards has the year 1910 in the caption, and the ones postally sent have dates on the postmarks which vary from 1907 to 1910. The cards are in very good condition.
Lady Arabella Denny & The Magdalen Asylum Dublin & Kerry Interest: ÿÿA large wooden Commemoration Plaque / Board in honour of Lady Arabella Denny (1707 ? 1792) for her immense philanthropic work, and for founding Ireland?s first Magdalene Asylum, in Dublin in 1765. The wording painted on board, approx. 84cms x 122cms (33" x 48") gold on black ground. The wording on the plaque as follows: This InstitutionÿFor the Reception of Penitent Females Under the Age of 20ÿ Was Founded the 11th of June 1765, by Lady Arabella Denny, daughter of the Earl of Kerry, and widow of Arthur Denny Esq. of Tralee By the zeal and exertions of this excellent lady, this Asylum was the means of restoring many, during her life time, to Virtue and Happiness, and by her influence, and the tried usefulness of such a shelter from disgrace and ruin, it experienced the most decided marks of public approbation and assistance.ÿ Since that period it has continued to answer all the humane purposes of its establishment, and its directors expect from the public the same liberal support. As the institution derives its funds from voluntary subscription, and principally from the Collections in the Chapel, the congregation are earnestly entreated to consider that the benefaction of each individual contributes materially to provide the means of rescuing their fellow-creatures from all the miseries of profligacy and vice, and is indispensibly necessary for the maintenance of the charity.ÿÿ This plaque, which formerly stood in the Magdalen Chapel, not only gives due praise to Lady Arabella?s good work but stresses its high moral purpose and urges the congregation to contribute generously to its continuance. Together with the above Plaque, there is an accompanying shield shaped brass ?Organ? Plaque, erected from contributions by the community to the late Revd. A. Pollork, who served as Chaplain and Organist to the Asylum for 12 years, during the mid 19th Century. Included also in this lot is an Armchair known as ?The Foundresses Chair.? The late 19th Century mahogany chair has been cut down to a size suitable for nursing children. It has been clearly valued at respected, as it has been extensively and expertly repaired over the years. Provenance: ÿWhen the Magdalen Institution was moved from Leeson St., Dublin, the Church and Institute buildings were demolished in the late 1950?s for development purposes. The two plaques and the chair were salvaged by H. Verschoyle Campbell of Fitzwilliam Square & Tassagart, Saggart, Co. Dublin. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Church, attached to the Magdalen Institute for many years. Lady Arabella Denny (1707-1792), described by a biographer as ?one of the great philanthropists of the eighteenth century?, was the second daughter of Thomas Fitzmaurice, later created Earl of Kerry, and Anne, daughter of Sir William Petty, creator of the Down Survey.ÿ As a teenager she lived mainly in her parents? home at Lixnaw Castle, where her first charitable project was to run a dispensary for the poor living on the estate. In 1727 she married a neighbour, Colonel Arthur Denny, MP, ?a very good sort of man, uninformed and ignorant;? however, his brother Sir Thomas, ?a coward, a savage, and a fool?, made her life miserable by his bullying ? a problem she resolved by learning to become a crack shot with a pistol and threatening to kill him unless he left her alone. On the death of her husband in 1742, leaving her a childless widow with a generous allowance, she went to live in Dublin, settling eventually at Peafield Cliff opposite the end of Merrion Avenue.ÿ In 1758 she was so horrified on reading a government report into the appalling conditions at the Foundling Hospital that she organised a group of ladies to superintend the running of the hospital, effecting major improvements in the lives of the inmates; she also spent a great deal of her own money on the construction of new buildings. Her work on behalf of abandoned infants drew her attention to the plight of their mothers, who in many cases had been rejected by their families and left to starve on the streets.ÿ In 1765 she founded in Leeson Street, Ireland?s first Magdalen Asylum, where young women were taken in, given proper care, and trained in practical skills such as weaving and lace-making which would serve them well when they returned to the outside world. The cost of maintaining the asylum went far beyond Lady Arabella?s means, so in 1768 she founded a chapel attached to the building, where the great and the good were encouraged not only to attend but to subscribe generously to the collections.ÿ Meanwhile, she continued an active social life, leading to contacts with wealthy and prominent people who soon flocked to the chapel, not only to the weekly services but to special Charity Sermons preached by learned and eloquent clerics. Lady Arabella retired in 1790 owing to old age and illness.ÿ She died at Peafield Cliff in 1792 and was buried in the family vault in Tralee. The Great Sword of Howthÿ An early antique steel two hand Sword, with round pommel on a 21" (53cms), upward tapering tang the two cross quillions, measuring 19" (48cms), and one oval ring guard on a tapering double edge blade lacking its tip 44" (112cms), 66" (168cms) overall, as is. (1) This mighty weapon has been in the St Lawrence family for many generations.ÿ According to tradition, it was used by Sir Armoricus Tristram, who arrived at Howth with Sir John de Courcy in the year 1177 and commanded the Norman army which defeated the local inhabitants in battle at Evora outside the gate of the present castle, at a little river since known as the Bloody Stream.ÿ He was rewarded for his services by being granted the lordship of Howth and changed his name to St Lawrence in honour of the saint on whose feast-day the battle had been fought. A more sober assessment dates the sword to the late 15th century, so it may well have been borne by Sir Armoricus?s descendant Sir Nicholas St Lawrence, 16th Lord & 3rd Baron Howth, [Lordship by Tenure, and Barony by Royal Appointment] who commanded the ?billmen? (wielders of a fearsome chopping blade mounted on a strong staff) at the battle of Knockdoe in 1504, in which the army of the Lord Deputy, the Earl of Kildare, defeated that of Ulick Burke, Lord of Clanricarde. The Sword is first recorded in an inventory of 1748, and is described and illustrated in Joseph C. Walker?s An Historical Essay on the Dress of the Ancient and Modern Irish ? to which is subjoined, a Memoir on the Armour and Weapons of the Irish (1788), while Lodge?s Peerage of Ireland (1789) states, after mentioning the victory of Sir Armoricus, that ?The sword, wherewith he fought, is still hanging in the hall of Howth?.
