Studio of Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt. (British, 1646-1723) Portrait of Isabella Bennet, Duchess of Grafton (1667-1723), standing, three-quarter length, beside a water fountain oil on canvas 134 x 107cm (52 x 42in) Provenance: According to a label on the reverse, bequeathed by Sir Godfrey Kneller to his pupil, Edward Byng; to his sister, Elizabeth Byng, who married the Reverend William Wray, Rector of Broadchalk, Wiltshire, and presumed thence by descent Other Notes: Isabella Bennet was the daughter of Lord Arlington and the first wife of the 1st Duke of Grafton. The original composition, of which this is apparently a studio version, hangs, according to a note on the reverse of the painting, in the King's Private Dining Room at Hampton Court Palace Neckline has been altered for purposes of Victorian modesty. Oil on canvas which has been lined. At the upper right comer is an impact damage which has caused a small tear. The paint layer is in a stable condition overall but has suffered from some wear. The blue pigment used in the dress appears to have degraded, leading to a mottled appearance. There is overpaint in many areas of the portrait, especially the background. The overpaint is slightly milky but generally acceptable from a normal viewing distance. The modern frame is in a good condition.

A pair of William IV oak hall chairs, with applied brass armorial crests to the panel backs with leaf carved detail, on octagonal tapering turned legs (2) 89 x 45cm (35 x 18in) Provenance: Probably Titsey Place, Surrey Katherine Maria Gresham (1770-1808), daughter of Sir John Gresham heiress to Titsey Place married William Leveson Gower (1779-1851), a younger son of Admiral the Hon. John Leveson Gower and first cousin of the Marquess of Stafford, later the 1st Duke of Sutherland in 1804. Katherine died four years later in 1808. Earl Granville's (Leveson-Gower) family crest usually has a better restrained collar chain on the walking wolf, it may also be noted that it is also the crest of LOWE of Highfield, Nottinghamshire. The grasshopper is the crest of GRESHAM, originally of Greasham, Norfolk.
Henry William Standing (British, fl. 1894-1931) The Deal is Done; and A Bay Shire with white blaze, in ribbons, being trotted out both signed " H W Standing 1911" watercolours (2) 36 x 54cm (14 x 21in) Old stretcher bar marks can be seen from the front on the first one - the second has a little sun (?) damage upper left-hand corner.
Harry Hall (British, 1815-1882) "Ackworth", a thoroughbred racehorse signed and dated "Harry Hall 1865" lower right oil on canvas 69 x 90cm (27 x 35in) Other Notes: Ackworth was a brown colt foaled in 1861 by Fazzoletto out of Consternation. He initially raced for a bookmaker named Harry Hill. Trained by John Day, he showed little form until running third in the 1864 Cesarewitch, after which he was sold for a lot of money (about 2,000 guineas) to the notorious Marquis of Hastings. On 25th October 1864, he beat 37 others in the Cambridgeshire and scored the Marquis' first major triumph, winning by a head at 13 to 1. The Hastings colours were Scarlet with a White hoop and cap and Ackworth was ridden by Tom Cannon. The horse won 6 races in 1865 but later lost his form, having been sold along with all the other horses owned by Hastings when he completely ran out of money. Hastings initially won a lot of money but within 4 years he lost his entire estate - over £100,000 due to the victory of Henry Chaplin's Hermit in the 1867 Derby. This has been the subject of numerous books as Hastings had eloped with Chaplin's fiancée Florence Paget. We are grateful to David Oldrey for his assistance with this catalogue entry. Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas and paint layer are in a good condition overall. There are a few areas of retouching across the surface. The varnish is thick, glossy and slightly yellowed with fly spots. The frame is in a poor condition and the gilding is actively flaking.

I consider the success of the attacks carried out by the Squadron was in great measure due to his leadership and to the confidence which his Squadron has in him”. Extra Comments from the Rear Admiral Commanding First Cruiser Squadron: “Fully concur. This was 853 Squadron’s first real strike and verdict is due to Lt Cdr Glaser that it was so successful”Recommendation for the MID 7th May 1944 HMS Fencer. “As Air Staff Officer he was unfailing in his devotion to duty and unsparing of himself during the operations involved in the passage of a recent North Russia Convoy and it’s attack by a U-boat pack. At one time for 72 hours he was continuously briefing the crews of aircraft and controlling the operations of those aircraft, when airborne, from the Air Operations Room, during which time he had no sleep or rest. Owing to the position of the bridge and its poor communication, I had to rely on him completely, giving him only the broadest outline upon which to base his decisions. At no time had I any worry as to the aircraft being used but to their best ability. In addition he is the Ship’s signal Officer. He is of outstanding ability for one of his age and seniority, is well able to accept responsibility and in possesses of sound powers of judgement.”This sword and DSC medal group sold Bosleys 3rd July 2013
