CHARLES WEST COPE (British, 1811-1890) A portrait of Reverend Temple Chevallier, Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy at Durham University, monogrammed and dated `CWC 1869` lower left, oil on canvas, 29 1/2" x 24 1/2" (see illustration) Note: Temple Chevallier (1794-1873) was a clergyman, astronomer and mathematician and the study of Astronomy at Durham University dates back to his election to the Professorship of Mathematics in 1835. Between 1847 and 1849, he made important observations regarding sunspots and was the first British astronomer to do so. He was also instrumental in establishing the Durham University Observatory (1839), from where he made significant observations of Jupiter`s moons and he also discovered a mountain on the moon. The lunar crater Chevallier is named after him. Chevallier was a great Victorian polymath, having come from Cambridge with a reputation of a scholar in Mathematics, Theology, Classics, English Literature and French and Italian languages. He served as Reader at Durham in Hebrew 1835-1871, Registrar 1835-1865, and from 1834-1835 also assisted with lectures in Divinity. From 1835 until his death, he also served as Parish Priest at Esh, just outside Durham, where he founded the village school and restored the church. Charles West Cope got to know Chevallier when he and his wife travelled to Durham in June 1869. He described him as a strong character, lively, affectionate and a man of hearty cordiality, who was always at great pains to grant the warmest reception to his guests. Cope painted him as a scholar for the dining hall at the University and this portrait can still be seen in the Great Hall of Durham Castle. Lot 243 is a smaller version of this painting which was painted for his son-in-law, the Reverend Doctor Peace. Dorothy Carleton Smyth was born in Glasgow, the daughter of a jute manufacturer. She studied art in Manchester and then attended the Glasgow School of Art from 1895 until 1905. Her stained glass piece "Tristan and Iseult" was exhibited at the International Exhibition in 1901, and in 1903 an anonymous female patron paid for Smyth to study in Europe. At first Smyth was best known as a portraitist, particularly for her sketches of theatre personalities. Later she specialised in theatre costume working in London, Paris and Sweden. She designed costumes for several of the Shakespearean Festivals held in Stratford-upon-Avon, beginning in 1906. Smyth was appointed Principal of Commercial Art at Glasgow School of Art in 1914, and in 1933 was appointed as the first woman director of the School of Art, but died before she could take up the post. Smyth was a particular favourite of Cedric Chivers, whom she worked for in his large Bath bindery. Chivers employed five women "to design, illuminate, and colour vellum for book decoration, and to work on embossed leather... but the woman most frequently employed for this kind of work was probably Dorothy Carl[e]ton Smyth" (Marianne Tidcombe, Women Bookbinders 1880-1920, p.86). This important early work on Vietnam was first published in French in Rome in 1650. Jesuit priest Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660) devoted most of his life to missionary work in Vietnam. Not only did he convert many of the people to Christianity, he also wrote the first Vietnamese catechism and had a lasting effect on Vietnamese writing. A gifted linguist, he mastered Vietnamese in only six months, compiled the first Portuguese-Latin-Vietnamese dictionary, and was one of the first to attempt to Romanize the Vietnamese alphabet. Today the national language of Vietnam, Quoc Ngu, is based on his original transliterations and phonetic work. Rhodes`smissionary work was constantly at odds with the local pagan priests and he was exiled twice and nearly sentenced to death for his teachings. Rhodes said in his reports that he converted more than 6,000 Vietnamese, almost certainly an inflated number, but nevertheless he did win converts. He also worked as a missionary in China, Macao and Persia, but his true love was for the Vietnamese people. (1)
