Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) Author and lexicographer, Autograph Letter Signed to Sophia Thrale (1771-1824), later Mrs Kenrik Hoare, seventh child and sixth daughter of Hester Lynch Thrale (later Mrs Piozzi), London 24 July 1783, 3 pages 4TO, annotated at the head (in another hand) with the numbers '314' and '38'/Footnote: The only known letter from Johnson to Sophia although there are several references in Johnson's published letters to correspondence between them (e.g. 'The reckoning between me and Miss Sophy is out of my head. She must write to tell me how it stands')./Printed in The Letters of Samuel Johnson, (ed. Bruce Bedford, 5 vols., Oxford, 1994, IV p. 175) with the note 'Present location unknown. Transcribed from a photostat in the Hyde Collection [Harvard]'./A charming and characteristic letter to one of Johnson's young friends (Sophia's twelfth birthday had been the day before, although the fact is not mentioned or alluded to in this letter), the elderly Johnson chides her for not thinking of herself as his favourite ('my favour will, I am afraid, never be worth much, but be its value more or less, You are never likely to lose it'); praising her arithmetical ability ('Never think, my Sweet, that you have arithmetick enough; when you have exhausted your master, buy Books, nothing amuses more harmlessly than computation', and pointing her to a 'curious calculation' relating to the capacity of Noah's Ark in Wilkins's Real Character ('An essay towards a Real Character and a philosophical language' (1668) by John Wilkins) (footnote to the published letter)./Samuel Johnson was a devoted and life-long friend of Hester Lynch Thrale (later Piozzi) and her most assiduous correspondent. The series of his known letters to Hester commence in 1765 and eventually end after their estrangement in 1783. He also wrote occasionally to her children, but the present letter is the only one surviving, as far as is known, to Sophia./Transcript: Dearest Miss Sophy,/By my absence from home, and for one reason and another I owe a great number of letters, and I assure you that I sit down to write yours first. Why you should think yourself not a favourite I cannot guess, my favour will, I am afraid never be worth much, but be its value more or less, you are never likely to lose it, and less likely if you continue your studies with the sure diligence as you have begun them. /Your proficiency in arythmetick is not only to be commended but admired. Your master does not, I suppose come very often, nor stay very long, yet your advance in the Science of numbers is greater than is commonly made by those who for so many weeks as you have been learning, spend six hours a day in the writing school./Never think, my sweet, that you have arithmetic enough; when you have exhausted your Master, buy Books. Nothing amuses more harmlessly than computation, and nothing is oftener applicable to real business or speculative enquiries. A thousand stories which the ignorant tell, and believe, die away at once, when the computist takes them in his gripe. I hope you will cultivate in yourself a disposition to numerical enquiries; they will give you entertainment in Solitude by the practice, and reputation in publick by the effort. If you can borrow Wilkins's Real Character, a folio which the Booksellers can perhaps let you have, you will have a very curious calculation, which you are qualified to consider, to show Noah's Ark was capable of holding all the known animals of the world, with provision for all the time in which the earth was underwater./Let me hear from you again. I am, Madam, Your Humble Servant/Sam. Johnson/London July 24, 1783 CONDITION REPORT: Paper watermarked 'R. Williams'. The letter tanned with some scattered browning. Several worn through folds. Both sides repaired with later paper strips. Scattered finger marks and partial fingerprints to the first page of the letter and the page later annotated in ink to the top of the page with the numbers '314' and '38'. Additional pencilled header 'To Miss Sophia Thrale'. On the exterior address page, the addressee crossed with a flourish in ink & stamped below; the stamp not fully legible but apparently reading 24 | 17 within a circle. The wax seal not present but some red wax residue around the edges of a hole torn into the letter - presumably in the process of having broken or removing the seal. Further loss to the right-hand side of the third page of the letter with later paper strip repair. All over the letter is in fair condition and the losses do not obscure the writing, as can be seen in the illustrations provided.
