Rome: Delfino, [1985]. first edition, first printing, unabridged English edition edited by Dr. Stanley Wells, numbered 0018 of 1,200 copies (although likely fewer), foreword by Sir John Gielgud, 10 offset full-page lithographs in colours after Henry Moore, captioned tissue-guards, edges untrimmed, original red goatskin, with rectangular gilt-metal bas-relief by Henry Moore entitled Hamlets Dilemma on upper cover, raised bands, gilt title on spine, housed in a vertical red suede sculptural stand, folio, 36 x 51cm. The colophon states an edition of 1,200 copies, however, the consensus in commerce together with a total of only three institutional copies being recorded, it is likely that the edition was never completed. Condition Report: rubbing and light scuffs to binding, otherwise the book is internally clean and bright, overall good condition. the red suede sculptural stand faded, with some rubbing to top and bottom.

HECTOR QUINE. BRITISH 1926-2015. An important and unique classical guitar by Hector Quine in spruce and rosewood. Interior luthier's label stating 'HECTOR V. QUINE 2' and dated 1954. Hector Quine (December 30, 1926 - January 1, 2015) was a pioneering classical guitarist and educator whose contributions to the guitar world are immeasurable. Studying initially under Alexis Chesnakov, Quine's early career was significantly influenced by his association with Julian Bream whom he met at Dr. Boris Perott's 'Philharmonic Society of Guitarists.' This relationship not only forged a lifelong friendship but also deeply influenced Quine's approach to guitar playing and pedagogy. He authored numerous influential textbooks focusing on guitar methodology and technique, and notably became the first professor of guitar at the Royal Academy of Music. His teachings shaped the careers of eminent guitarists such as Roland Gallery, Michael Lewin, and David Russell. Beyond his educational contributions, Quine was an accomplished luthier, crafting 18 exceptional guitars from 1951 to 1973, reminiscent of the early Hermann Hauser I models. Notably, Julian Bream played Quine's guitar no. 2 at London's Wigmore Hall and used the same instrument for his recordings in Vienna's Mozart Hall, where Bream celebrated its bell-like tone as a revelation in sound. We believe that this was the second guitar made by Quine and we are told by the vendor that this was acquired by Julian Bream in 1954. If so, it was used for Bream's fourth Wigmore Hall performance in September 1954 and for the recording of Spanish Guitar : Turina, de Falla, Sor in September 1955 and Guitar Music of Villa-Lobos and Torroba also recorded in September 1955. Provenance (we are informed): The vendor's father purchased the guitar from the classical guitarist Brian Jeffery. Jeffery was quite clear that the guitar had been Bream's. There was in existence a letter either from Bream or Jeffery to authenticate the guitar as Bream's, but this has unfortunately been lost.Please note:There is a website available online listing Bream’s guitars. Whilst factually correct, the photographs are library images and not of the actual guitars owned by Bream.

AN ENGRAVED BRASS SHI'A GEOMANTIC PLAQUE WITH NUMERALS, AND ALLAH AND THE PROPHET'S NAMES AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON Possibly Deccan, Central India, 19th centuryOf circular, slightly convex shape, the front of the plaque engraved in an arrangement typical of divinatory vessels and Islamic magic bowls, with a large square chart in the centre with 225 boxes, each containing miniature naskh inscriptions repeating the names of Allah, the Prophet Muhammad, and 'Ali, the remaining space around the edges in-filled with fifteen rows of numerals, the central row often reserved to inscriptions invoking the Prophet and the first Shi'a Imam, with a circular hoop on the reverse, 11.5cm diam. 11.5cm diam.
