Lot 1505

A bronze sculpture by Jean & Marianne Bremers from the Netherlands The roller skaters: A later 20th century bronze by this well known husband and wife team, who are more well known for their much larger sculptures. This piece measures 20.5 cm high, and is a limited edition number 50 out of 50 pieces. It is taken from a much larger version that they produced first (see old photograph included with this sale). Very little of their work comes on to the market, especially not in the UK, as most of it appears to be large one off consignments for public display in the Netherlands. Complete with original signed photographic certificate of authenticity, indicating production date of 1985.

(Einband kaum fleckig). Blake 468; Nissen, ZBI, 4225; Eales I, 1236; Garrison-Morton, 302; Pritzel 9675; M. Sabia, Le opere di Antonio Vallisneri medico e naturalista reggiano (1661-1730). Bibliografia ragionata, Rimini 1996, S. 106-120. - First collected edition containing three treatises by Vallisnieri that had appeared independently at Hertz in Venice in 1714. The Venetian printer decided to collect the unsold copies in a single volume, giving the prints a general title page with the amended printing date. His in-depth studies on the reproductive apparatus, described in the third treatise, contributed - together with the researches conducted by Redi - to demonstrate the unfounded nature of the theory of spontaneous generation, anticipating the advent of the evolutionist hypothesis. The Lezione Accademica also represents the first systematic study on the origin of Alpine springs, a true milestone in geological literature, accompanied by a plate that is certainly one of the first examples of modern stratigraphic illustration. - Contemporary vellum with gilt label on spine, red edges. Binding barely stained.

Kassel, Henrich Harmes, 1719. Folio (360x232 mm). Mit einem Frontispiz von J. A. Thelott und 25 (2 Falt-) Tafeln von C. W. Eberlin, I. N. Prizier und I. A. Bergakademie Freiberg 725; Poggendorff II, 1358; Hirsch/H. V,980; Friedrich Frhr. - Very scarce first edition. With frontispiece and 25 plates. Contemporary leather (slightly rubbed, small worming). Few sheets with small damages (loss of few letters), 1 plate trimmed, partly with worming.

Miller, Marcantonio Franceschini, Turin, 2001, p. 240, no. 137, ill.The subject, Noli me Tangere, occurs several times in the artist's account book, preserved in the Biblioteca Communale in Bologna (MS B.6). The present painting, which has been dated to the first decade of the 18th century, would seem to relate to the one commissioned by the Marquess of Exeter on the 4 June 1704 when Franceschini was still residing in Genoa and was working on the decoration of the Palazzo Ducale. A companion piece, Christ and the Woman of Samaria was also requested at the same time. These paintings remained in the artist's studio at the death of the Marquess that same year. The popularity of the composition is attested to by the number of copies after it. Three of these were known to Dwight Miller: a good studio replica of similar dimensions in the Palazzo Arcivescovile, Bologna; what Miller described as an excellent replica, perhaps partially finished by Franceschini himself, which appeared on the art market in Berlin in the mid-1930s; and a good replica of the lower part of the composition traditionally said to have been painted by Francesco Ange, which hangs in the sacristy of Santa Maria di Galliera, Bologna. Miller suggested that a comparison of the present work with the version the artist did of the same subject at least a decade earlier (Spinola Gallery, Genoa) demonstrates the development of Franceschini's interpretation towards a more sober, meditated composition. This came out of his intensified pursuit of the classical style: the handling is smoother, the concentration on clean, linear rhythms more intense, the palette clearer and lighter, and the pose of Christ more formalised. In general Miller detected a reflection here of Albani's Noli me Tangere in the Servite Church in Bologna. He also observed how in transforming the rather wistful pose of Christ in the earlier version in Genoa to one of greater formality Franceschini paraphrased the pose given to Christ in a Noli me Tangere by Lucio Massari, a gifted pupil of Annibale Carracci and suggested that Franceschini must have first studied this picture when he executed his high altar for this church in 1686.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * TP* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Studio of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, called El Greco (Candia 1541-1614 Toledo)Head of Christ, on the kerchief of Saint Veronicaoil on canvas 61.2 x 49.2cm (24 1/8 x 19 3/8in).Footnotes:ProvenanceSale, Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, 3 November 1967, lot 34 (as Property of a lady), where purchased by the present owner's father (as by El Greco for $16,000)The story of Saint Veronica and her Veil does not appear in the Bible but legend has it that Veronica approached Christ on the road to Cavalry and offered to wipe the blood and sweat for his face with her Veil. Her act of kindness was repaid when the features of Christ's face were miraculously imprinted on the cloth.According to Harold Wethey, El Greco treated this subject in two different ways: Saint Veronica holding the kerchief with the imprinted image of Christ and the Veronica or the Sudarium entirely by itself, as seen in the present work. An example of the first type can be seen in the collection of Maria Luisa Caturla in Madrid and the second type is represented in the Collection of Basil Goulandris, New York (see: H. Wethey, El Greco and His School, Princeton, 1962, vol. II, p. 148-9).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

2Recorded through an engraving executed by Miguel de Sorelló (circa 1700-circa 1765) in Rome in 1734, the present painting depicts the only recently beatified Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (1600-1659) before the Madonna and Child. In her 2017 article on the present work, Stella Rudolph compares it to Maratta's The Madonna appearing before Saint Francis de Sales of circa 1690 originally painted for the Church of San Filippo in Forli and which now hangs in the Pinacoteca of the same city. This suggested dating of the last decade of the 17th Century coincides with King Charles II of Spain's first petition for the canonization of Juan de Palafox. Rudolph goes on to propose Francesco Salazar (1656-1706) as a possible candidate for commissioning the painting. A lost oval portrait by Maratta, now known through an engraving by Jacques Blondeau (1655-1698), confirms that the artist knew Salazar who is known to have been in Rome for the conclave to elect Innocent XII Pignatelli in 1691.Having served as chaplain to Maria of Austria and later as Bishop of Puebla, Mexico, followed by a brief stint as viceroy of Mexico, Palafox was first proposed for canonization in 1694 by King Charles II of Spain. The present painting may well have been commissioned with the intention of recording such an auspicious event. However, the cause for canonization was effectively blocked by the Jesuits, with whom Palafox had disagreed over ecclesiastical jurisdiction in Mexico, until it was taken up again in the 20th Century with Juan de Palafox finally being proclaimed Blessed in 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Karel Philips Spierincks (Brussels circa 1600-1639 Rome)The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist and angels oil on canvas87.2 x 126.3cm (34 5/16 x 49 3/4in).in an impressive carved and gilt Louis XV frameFootnotes:ProvenanceIn the present owners' family since 19th centuryLittle is known of the life of the Brussels-trained painter, Karel Philips Spierincks (also known as Carlo Filippo after he settled in Rome) but there are a few notices that allow us to put together a scant biography. He became a master of the guild in Brussels in 1622 and just two years 'Carlo Filippo Spirinch' is recorded as living in Rome with two other Flemish painters. By 1634 he paid dues to the Academy of Saint Luke and he was living with François Dusquenoy, with whom Poussin had also lived for a time.In 1960 Anthony Blunt first grouped together works attributed to Spierincks, based around the Venus sleeping, with satyrs and cupids in the Royal Collection (RCIN 405568), which can be identified as the work described as 'venus with satires Cupids and landskip of Carlo Fellippo' when it was acquired by Charles II. In his article he describes Spierincks as 'the first imitator of Poussin's Bacchanals' to reflect his most typical subject matter of choice. The present work, however, is one of only a handful of paintings of a religious nature by the artist with one other given to him by Silvia Danesi Squarzina which shows Hagar and the Angel and now in the Neues Palais, Potsdam (see S. Danesi Squarzina, 'A 'Hagar and the angel' by Carel Philips Spierinck in Potsdam', Burlington Magazine, June 99, pp.349-351). With the profusion of putti climbing the tree in the background, the artist has, in the present painting, referenced the type of subject matter with which he was far more familiar. We are grateful to Dr. Erich Schleier for independently confirming the attribution to Spierincks on the basis of a colour photograph. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Kingzett, A Catalogue of the works of Samuel Scott, in Walpole Society, 1980-1982, vol. 48, p.32 under entry BThe present work originally hung in The Gallery at Strawberry Hill, which Horace Walpole created between 1761 and 1763 as a place to entertain and to display pictures. Samuel Scott was an artist promoted by Walpole and of the large set of Scott's views commissioned by Walpole for the two niches in the Gallery this is the only that has resurfaced. Scott's works, which included gothic views as well as sea pieces, hung in the mirrored niches which imitated Cardinal Bourchier's tomb at Canterbury Cathedral, alongside pastel portraits by Rosalba Carriera and Jean-Etienne Liotard and paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Scott had become a neighbour of Walpole when he moved to Twickenham in 1758 and Walpole said that Scott's works 'will charm in every age' and that 'if he was second to Vandeveldt in sea pieces, he excelled him in variety.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Attributed to Sir William Beechey R.A (Burford 1753-1839 London)Portrait of Warren Hastings, half-length, in a blue coat oil on canvas76.2 x 63.5cm (30 x 25in).Footnotes:Warren Hastings was the first and most famous of the British Governor Generals of India. He dominated Indian affairs from 1772 to 1785 and, on his return to England, was impeached and finally acquitted on all counts following a sensational and historic 7-year trial. Judging from the sitter's age the present portrait would appear to date from sometime shortly after he returned from India in 1785 and is earlier than those portraits with which Hastings was known to have rewarded his loyal allies and supporters as gifts following the trial. The trial became a debate between two radically opposed visions of empire – one based on ideas of power and conquest in pursuit of the exclusive national interests of the colonizer, versus one represented by Burke, of sovereignty based on a recognition of the rights of the colonized. While Hastings was able to institute significant reforms as an administrator, his legacy as the 'architect of British India' remains inevitably controversial. We are grateful to Charles Greig for his assistance with the cataloguing for this lot.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
