Lot 161

A French or Italian patinated bronze model of a Shepherd boy after the Antique, first half 18th century, portrayed standing beside a textured tree trunk, a wolf skin draped over his shoulder, on a canted rectangular base, stamped with the French 'c couronne' control mark, 26.5cm high, 8cm wideThis bronze takes its inspiration from a 1st or 2nd century Roman marble, which is itself a copy of a Greek original. While the marble is now in the collection of the Louvre, it was previously at the Villa Borghese, Rome. The 'c couronne' was a French tax mark struck on bronzes over a certain weight between February 1745 and February 1749. The 'C' stands for cuivre (copper), one of the components of the bronze alloy.

Lot 131

A rare sculpted oak model of a European merchant or army officer, first quarter 18th century, Dutch or possibly French, in contemporary attire including tricorn hat, cravat and long coat with sash and billowing drape, with buckled boots, on a rectangular base, 41cm high, 16cm wideThe present lot shows similarities to depictions of East India traders manufactured in the English and Dutch colonies during the early years of the 18th century. The best-known versions of these are by Chinese plaster sculptor Amoy Chinqua. His circa 1716 model of merchant and colonial administrator Joseph Collet, in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, is particularly similar in attire. As the sculpture presented here is made of oak, it is more likely an unusual European rendition of a similar subject.Condition Report: The sculpture bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age. There is some evidence of minor old worming, particularly to the base and the left sleeve, though this doesn't appear to be active. There is an old repair across the socle, mostly visible to the underside. There are two shallow surface inconsistencies (narrow, each circa 0.5-1cm long) to the coat, possibly inconsistencies in the timber of very small chips. The left elbow is a little scuffed.Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 168

Lot 109

A painted dummy board depicting a lady sweeping, 18th century, depicted wearing a bonnet and a blue dress and apron, 169cm high, 89cm widePreviously exhibited at the Bowes Museum, County Durham.  Please note: The board may possibly date to the first half of the 19th century. The appearance and evidence of the reverse side of the dummy board in particular appear to support it being of 18th or early 19th century in date. Condition Report: Old marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use.Old splits and chips. some old repairs. Some later screws to the stretchers of timber/ supports attached to the reverse of the board. Potential buyers should satisfy themselves in reference to the age of this item. The board may possibly date to the first half of the 19th century. The appearance and evidence of the reverse side of the dummy board in particular appear to support it being of 18th or early 19th century in date. The painted side of the board appears to have been cleaned and may incorporate some re-touching to the paint. The board is 89cm wide at the widest point. Please refer to the additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 147

A rare German gilt bronze alloy model of a giraffe, possibly 17th century, likely Augsburg or Nuremberg, the animal portrayed with a turned neck and stylised features, 18.5cm highThe present bronze is possibly an early rendition of a giraffe as viewed by European craftsmen. The sloped back, buckled hind legs and elongated face may not have derived from a first-hand encounter with the exotic animal, but instead bear distinct similarities to prints of giraffes that circulated at the time.A direct influence may have been the Icones, by 16th century Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner, which includes an illustration of a giraffe in an almost identical pose and with similarly pointed features.Exotic animals provided popular subject matter for bronziers and silver smiths in 16th and 17th century Southern Germany, where they were not only seen as collectible curiosities but also used as table ornaments. A well-known example of this tradition is the silver ostrich by Elias Zorer in the Wallace Collection, whose stylised and elongated features share a similar visual language to the present bronze.Condition Report: The giraffe bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age. There are some areas of loss and wear to the gilding, including to the face and feet. Some dark parts to gilding in the shape of 'drips', to the belly and right haunch. The gilding is quite lustrous and 'oily' overall. The giraffe appears to have been cast in two halves and there is a join running along the belly and back, and up to the neck. The hind legs are quite strongly buckled which is likely the design, though there may possibly have been some bending or damage (if this is the case it is not at all apparent). Overall this unusual and fascinating bronze is in perfectly presentable condition.Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 243

A Continental sculpted white marble roundel, first half 19th century, possibly a vacant armorial plaque, the raised centre framed by a thick imbricated laurel wreath, approximately 28cm diameterCondition Report: The roundel bears the usual marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age.The marble is slightly sugary and darker in colour to the edges, where there are also a handful of small losses to the edges of the laurel border and three or four tips of the leaves. There are darker marks/colours to the raised centre, possibly remnants of previous colouring. The rear is flat carved and the roundel could for example be hung on a wall, though there is no fixture for wall mounting currently present.Condition Report Disclaimer

Only Separate PublicationJoyce (James) A Protest against Plagiarism. An original printed copy of the protest and appeal issued in French by a constellation of American and European literary and cultural figures, on Joyce's birthday 2 February 1927, over the unauthorized publication of sections of Joyce's Ulysses by the American publisher Samuel Roth in his Two Worlds Monthly magazine, without permission or royalty and in 'un texte incomplete'. First and only separate publication, a fine copy, 1 pp folio, with one fold mark, in a custom made folder.Issued over the names of some 167 notable people, the protest was instigated by Joyce and was drawn up by legal friends of his (see Ellmann, 1983, 585-7). It is thus a Joyce item, although he himself did not sign. It complains about the breach of Joyce's rights as author, and invites editors and others to withhold support and publicity from Roth and his enterprises. It was later published in Transition 1 (Paris, April 1927).The signatures, in alphabetical order, include virtually everyone you ever heard of, from Albert Einstein to H.G. Wells, W.B. Yeats, Virginia Woolf, Paul Valery, Bertrand Russell, Marcel Prevost, Sean O'Casey, Liam O'Flaherty, E. Oe. Somerville, Italo Svevo, Thomas Mann, Ernest Hemingway, Alice S. Green, Andre Gide, Augusta Gregory, Benedetto Croce, John Galsworthy, Robert Bridges, Arnold Bennett, Knut Hamsun, Wyndham Lewis, Gabriel Miro, Bunin, Luigi Pirandello, T.S.Eliot. The extraordinary range and quality of the signatories testifies to Joyce's worldwide reputation and influence, five years after publishing Ulysses.Joyce eventually secured a legal judgement restraining Roth's activities, which initially were possible only because Ulysses was for some years banned from import to the United States, hence Joyce could not establish his copyright in the usual way. See Slocum & Cahoon C68.A fragile and important item of the greatest rarity. (1)

As a manuscript, w.a.f. (1)The Hon Richard Thomas Rowley (1812-1887) was the younger brother of Lord Langford of Summerhill, Co. Meath. At the general election of 1831, in which the key issue was the government's proposed reform bill, he stood for one of the two seats in Meath County (the first contested election there since 1802). There were five candidates - four supporters of reform and one (Rowley) a well-known opponent of the bill. The government feared that the quarrelling of the reformers would split the vote and give the seat to Rowley. They need not have worried - Rowley withdrew at the end of the first day's polling, having received only eight votes. (However, he was more successful in later years, becoming M.P. for Harwich from 1860 to 1865.)

Kathleen Clarke's CopyO'Brien (William) & Ryan (Desmond) eds. Devoy's Post Bag. Vol. One - Vol. Two, 1870-80, 1880-1928. D. 1948 & [1953]. Tall 8vo cloth in chipped d.ws, clean copies. Vol. Two Signed by the editor William O'Brien, dated Feb. 1953. Kathleen Clarke's copy (widow of Tom Clarke, who features extensively in the later letters), with her dairy account from Hughes Bros.laid in. Kathleen Clarke was a daughter of the old Limerick Fenian John Daly. She married Tom Clarke in 1899 after his release following 15 years imprisonment in England. Clarke asked her not to take part in the Rising, charging her instead with responsibility for the welfare of relatives of those who would be killed or imprisoned. The week after the Rising, she set up Irish National Aid and Victim Support, fending off various Redmondites who offered to assist her. A year later she hired Michael Collins as an assistant, giving him a platform from which he reorganised the Volunteers. She later joined Fianna Fail and was elected to the Dail, but left the party over the execution of Republicans. She was elected Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1939, the first woman to hold the position. When it appeared that Margaret Mary Pearse might have an interest in the position, it was suggested that Mrs. Clarke might stand aside. Her response was, 'Tom Clarke's widow stands aside for nobody!'John Devoy was head of the I.R.B.'s American wing Clan na Gael and provided the financial support which kept the Irish organisation alive from the 1870s all the way to the Easter Rising. His post bag tells the inside story of fifty years of struggle, persevering through many setbacks to the establishment of an independent Irish state.

'Just a Lad of Eighteen Summers ..'Kevin Barry [1902-1920] His personal Crucifix and Scapular, in an inscribed envelope signed by Kathleen McKenna [an assistant on the Irish Bulletin], stating they were given to Sean McKeon on November 2nd 1920 after Vespers and prayers for Barry's immortal soul. The hand-sewn scapular much worn, its ribbon in pieces, the crucifix in good condition. [The Scapular, worn by Catholics suspended from the shoulders, is a silent prayer that shows one's dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary].Kevin Barry, a medical student in Dublin, joined the Volunteers in October 1917. He was arrested on 20 September 1920, reportedly with a pistol, after an engagement in which three British soldiers (one of them slightly younger than Barry) were killed. He was sentenced to death, and in spite of appeals for clemency, was hanged in Mountjoy Jail on 1 November (All Saints Day), the first Volunteer to be executed since the aftermath of the Rising. He died on the day of Terence MacSwiney's funeral in Cork, the two events causing massive international publicity which greatly damaged the British cause in Ireland.A personal and religious memento of great significance.
