A REGENCY IRISH NEEDLEWORK QUAKER MOUNTMELLICK SCHOOL SAMPLER BY ELIZABETH NEALE worked with polychrome silks in cross, satin and eyelet stitch on a linen ground, with brightly coloured alphabets, one in the mythical 'Holbein' stitch and numerals, with bands of flowers within a scrolling leaf and flower border, signed and dated 'Elizabeth Neale Mountmelick Boarding School Anno 1807', in a later glazed wood frame 55 x 33.4cm Provenance Upper Slaughter Manor, The Collection of Micheál and Elizabeth Feller. Catalogue Note William Edmundson, the father of Quakerism in Ireland, settled in Mountmellick along with John Pim and a number of other Quakers in 1659. The first Quaker school was opened in Mountmellick in 1677 where stitching and knitting were taught to both girls and boys.
A GEORGE III HOLY POINT NEEDLE LACE SQUARE BY MARGARET DAVISON with a lattice design created by applied cream silk slips, worked with various lace designs, with the inscription 'Margt Davi 1808' worked into the central square, in a glazed ebonised moulded wood frame, the reverse of the frame with a handwritten note 'This seems to have been laced by the Margaret Davidson who died in 1830. Its name relates to items worked with this technique and used in liturgical laces. The Puritans were the first to make common use of this needlework design.

Literature The Feller Needlework Collection: 2, p.58 for a discussion of this sampler. Catalogue Note Harworth Free School was first endowed by a cook. In 1700 Robert Brailsford, employed at nearby Serlby Hall, home to Viscount Galway, established the school initially for the education of poor boys.

Catalogue Note In December 1796 a Quaker Boarding School called Nine Partners School was opened under the auspices of the New York Yearly Meeting. For its first five years the administrators were Joseph Tallcot and his wife Sarah Hawxhurst Tallcot, This school was the first successful American co-educational boarding school and served as a template for many Quaer Schools in the early United States.

A VERY RARE FIELD MARSHALL'S MAMELUKE TO THE FIRST BARON WILLIAM NICHOLSON GCB, 81.5cm clean curved blade with clipped back tip, etched with scrolling foliage, crowned GVR cypher and crowned crossed batons within a laurel wreath, all on a matt grey ground, stamped with the serial no. 04594 on the back edge, regulation gilt hilt incorporating crossed batons within a laurel wreath to either side, rosette riveted two-piece ivory grips, contained in its hallmarked silver scabbard, William Briggs & Co. London 1914. William Nicholson served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, Mahdist War, Third Anglo-Burmese War, Second Boer War and the First World War finishing with the rank of Field Marshal and was Chief of the Imperial General Staff. Since the establishment of the Rank of Field Marshal in 1736 there have only been 141 appointments.
A 7TH QUEEN'S HUSSARS OFFICER'S SWORD TO MAJOR GENERAL JOHN VAUGHAN CB DSO OF OMDURMAN CHARGE FAME, 87cm blade etched with scrolling foliage, crowned regimental device for the 7th Hussars, crowned regimental device for the 10th Hussars, crowned VR cypher, owner's initials and maker's panel for Wilkinson, serial no. 30719, regulation pierced steel hilt with patent-solid grip, contained in its field service scabbard complete with knot. Major General John Vaughan graduated from Sandhurst in 1891 and immediately joined the 7th Hussars, serving in the Matabele, Mashonaland and Sudan wars. Most famously he participated in the charge of the 21st Lancers at Omdurman in 1898. During the Second Boer war, now promoted to Captain he was thrice mentioned in dispatches and received the DSO. By 1908 Vaughan was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 10th Hussars. During the First War he commanded the 3rd Cavalry Brigade and later as Major-General the 3rd Cavalry Division and went on to be mentioned in dispatches, earned a bar to his DSO and was made a companion of the Order of the Bath by the end of the War.
A 1ST DURHAM VOLUNTEER RIFLE CORPS PRESENTATION SWORD, 82cm slightly curved blade profusely etched with scrolling foliage, stands of arms, oak leaves, laurel sprays, a figure of Victory, strung bugle horns, a crowned VR cypher and PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN THOMPSON BY THE EFFECTIVE MEMBERS OF THE FIRST DURHAM VOLUNTEER RIFLE CORPS AS A TOKEN OF THEIR ESTEEM AND REGARD AND IN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF HIS ZEAL AND ENERGY IN PROMOTING THE WELFARE OF THE CORPS APRIL 1861, pierced and plated hilt decorated with scrolling foliage, oak leaves and laurel sprays, regimental devices and the arms of the city, silver wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its plated steel scabbard with pierced foliate mounts decorated to match, complete with silver bullion knot.
