[PSYCHOANALYSIS]: BONAPARTE MARIE (1882-1962) Princess George of Greece and Denmark. French author and psychoanalyst, closely associated with Sigmund Freud. An interesting archive of thirteen A.Ls.S., Marie (occasionally adding her title Princesse George de Grece nee Bonaparte), forty-three pages, 8vo and 4to, various places (Saint-Cloud, Paris, Vienna etc.), January 1927 - June 1931, largely to the lawyer Philippe Kah, in French. The first half of the correspondence covers Bonaparte's interest and research into the French murderer Marie Lefebvre, the Princess requesting various documents relating to Lefebvre's trial and stating, in part, 'M'interessant aux questions freudiennes, ayant passe plusiers mois d'etude a Vienne avec le Professeur Freud, et faisant partie de la Societe de Psychanalyse que plusieurs medecins analystes viennent de fonder a Paris, j'ai projete, pour le premier numero de la "Revue de Psychanalyse" que nous venons aussi de creer, un article sur le cas, si interessant du point de vue psychanalytique, de Mme. Lefebvre. (Translation: 'Being interested in Freudian questions, having spent several months of study in Vienna with Professor Freud, and being part of the Societe de Psychoanalyse that several medical analysts have just founded in Paris, I projected, for the first issue of the “Revue de Psychanalyse” which we have also just created, an article on the case, so interesting from the psychoanalytical point of view, of Mme. Lefebvre. Mr. Python was good enough to lend me what he has of the file, and I have already read it almost entirely. But the most interesting information for the analyst is hardly or not at all contained therein: that relating to the pre-history of Mrs. L. to her entire previous life in her own family, to her childhood. May I ask you if you could enlighten me on the various points of which I am attaching a short list?......Some questions may seem strange to you. But nothing is strange when it comes to studying the unconscious and everything has value. I would also like to know the exact terms in which Mrs. L. allegedly said, approximately fifteen days before her trial, that “she had executed the destinies of Providence”, didn't she rather say: of God'), with the questionnaire referred to and including questions regarding Lefebvre's family, whether or not she was breastfed, her mood at puberty, the circumstances of her marriage and whether she was a satisfied woman in her household, details of recurring nightmares preceding the crime etc., (January 1927), 'On m'a donne du ministere l'autorisation, dans le plus strict incognito, de voir Mme. I was given authorisation by the ministry, in the strictest incognito, to see Mme. Lefebvre before her departure for Haguenau. This visit should be accompanied by you and Mrs. Kah - or one of you. On the authorisation would be written that you would be accompanied by “a person” - This absolute incognito is very important in high places') and suggesting various days that she could travel to Lille (10th January 1927), 'Je veux vous remercier, ainsi que Madame Kah, de tout ce que vous avez bien voulu faire pour moi. (Translation: 'I want to thank you and Mrs. Kah for everything you have done for me. Yesterday could not have been more successful, and I began this morning, in view of my article, to put some order in the harvest gathered yesterday……May I ask you, if you once again have the opportunity to correspond with Mrs. Lefebvre, either directly or through her husband, to try to find out precisely the date when Mrs. Lefebvre's paternal grandparents came to live in the house of his father, Charles-Francois Lemaire? Is it before the birth of Marie Lemaire, at the same time or after, and in the latter case, how old was she then? It is the only thing of importance to her infantile prehistory that I forgot to specify, in what she told me yesterday, and this situation of the father living with the grandfather and grandmother (his father and mother to him) seems to me to be very important for having determined the reactions, from childhood, of his unconscious, then claiming basically the same thing from his son Andre……Do you also know if Mrs. Lefebvre likes animals, and whether she was gentle or cruel with them in her childhood?') (15th January 1927). The later correspondence deals with a variety of matters including the death of Kah's father, for which Bonaparte sends her sincere condolences, explaining that she will be happy to read the manuscript of Kah's book Aux enfers du crime ('In the Underworld of Crime') and commenting 'Quand j'aurai lu votre travail, je penserai a quelle preface pourrait lui convenir, du point de vue freudien, et je vous en ferai part' Further including Bonaparte's working autograph manuscript of her preface to Kah's book, signed ('Marie Bonaparte'), six pages, 4to, n.p., September 1930, in French.OWING TO LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY THE SALEROOM THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOR THIS LOT CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED. The King rewarded him with a seat in the Chamber of Peers and also made him a Marquis on 31st August 1817. He had already been a Count since 1808 by the grace of the Emperor.

I knew Yves Farges a few months before he died….From the first try, he seduced me by his silent power, by the patience of body and mind with which he listened to opponents, by the authority of his brief answers, which revealed the depth of his convictions, and…..by the warm friendship he bore to all men, by this confidence….that he showed to everyone. At the Congress of Vienna he went from group to group. DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) Scottish author, creator of Sherlock Holmes. A very fine A.L.S., A Conan Doyle, four pages, 8vo, Maloja Hotel, Maloja [Switzerland], 1st August 1895, to [James] Payn. Doyle's unusually lengthy letter begins in a social vein, 'How I wish I could waft you up here, for it is a very charming place, but decidedly inaccessible to any man who is not very robust….I see from the Illustrated that your wit and cheeriness never fail you, but I know that in your case that is no proof of health or strength', before continuing on the subject of his present literary endeavours, 'I have been very busy on the…..prize fighter book of which, I think, I said something to you. I think it will work out fairly well, but I dare not be too sanguine. I remember that you were disposed to think that I was dealing with an unsavoury subject in the prize ring……But I hope that it may justify itself. I think I have done it in such a way that it is picturesque and not offensive, though I have two big fights in the book. It has never yet been done, as far as I know, and yet the Ring is the one typical Anglo Saxon sport which has never existed outside English speaking countries, and which has now, I believe, a very deep hold of the people - in spite of the unspeakable state to which it has been reduced. In the old days it stood for chivalry, gallantry & fair play, and I am sure I would rather fight in the lists with lance and sword than stand up to a good man for a hundred rounds, as far as the bravery & endurance which is needed goes. I hope when it comes your way that you may think I have made it interesting.' The author returns to his social and sporting activities, 'Our chief amusement here is to play golf, but as the grass is very thick & long the game gives you a lot of fresh air with very little exertion, for at your first drive you lose your ball, and then you spend your day, with intervals for meals, in walking round in circles and looking for it. [John] Hare is here and I believe [Squire] Bancroft & [Arthur Wing] Pinero are expected, so we feel that we are quite a dramatic centre', and also comments on his holiday reading, 'Of course you have read Morrison's "Mean Streets". It seemed to me to be very good indeed. I have just finished "The Honour of Savelli" but did not care for that so much….Books are the great difficulty out here, for the hotel library has only got as far as Bulwer Lytton'. In concluding Doyle refers to the health of his wife ('very well & bright') and their plans to have their own house built by the end of the next summer, 'I bought the land, but the Tyndalls now claim that there is a right of way through it. I recall a painful story I read somewhere of a man who had actually finished his house when such a claim was made & proved. As a result he had the whole parish continually passing in at his back door and out at the front one. Warned by it I shall settle this matter before I build - and I have no doubt we shall arrange it all right'. A letter of excellent content, not least for its rich literary references to Doyle's novel Rodney Stone. Some light overall age wear, minor creasing and a few small, neat tears to the edges of some folds, about VGJames Payn (1830-1898) English novelist and editor of periodicals including Chambers's Journal and the Cornhill Magazine.John Hare (1844-1921) English actor and theatre manager.Squire Bancroft (1841-1926) English actor and theatre manager.Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934) English playwright.Doyle's Gothic mystery and boxing novel Rodney Stone was first published in TheStrand Magazine from January to December 1896. The work was adapted into a stage play, The House of Temperley, in 1909 and into a silent movie in 1913.

He came from a military family and was himself a Lieutenant in the 55th (Irish) Regiment of Foot. Frances travelled with her husband throughout his entire tour of duty across America, Continental Europe and eventually Ceylon. In 1781, the Doyles were captured together with Lord Rawdon when sailing home to England aboard the 'Cormorant'. In his Journal entry for 27 September, Baron von Closen referred to a rumour from America of Mrs Doyle's affair with Lord Rawdon and how he found Lieutenant-Colonel Doyle to have been 'a very easy-going fellow', suggesting that the affair might have been accepted by her husband. After several negotiations, Lieutenant-Colonel Doyle was exchanged for 'Sieur Ternan' and the Doyles finally reached English soil in 1782.Despite the alleged affair with Rawdon, Frances and Welbore went on to have three children. Their sons, Francis Hastings (1783-1839) and Carlo (b.1787) both became Major Generals in the army. The former became a baronet in 1828. The first finished on 14 February and delivered on 22nd February (costing £5 and £5/10/- for the frame). The second began on 15 February, finished on 21 February and delivered on 28 February (costing £10/10/- presumably for both miniature and frame). Both miniatures were framed by Flower. The overlapping time frame of the two miniatures implies that Wood was commissioned right from the beginning to paint two versions. In his fee book, Wood describes the sitter as, 'about 38 years old, shows chiefly right side and looking on'.In this portrait miniature, Henry Davis is wearing his Lieutenant Colonel uniform - a rank he obtained in the 25th Light Dragoons in January 1800. In May of the same year he was promoted to Major. In June 1799 Colonel Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, raised a military force in the north of Mysore, comprising the 25th Light Dragoons and the 73rd and 77th Regiments of Foot. Details of Lieutenant Colonel Davis' military history are limited but it is fair to assume, he served as part of this operation. The regiment disbanded in 1819, when the 25th Light Dragoons returned to Portsmouth on HMS Mangles from Madras. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y ФY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the UK, see clause 13.Ф This lot contains or is made of ivory and cannot be imported into the USA or any country within the EU.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 174

John Barry (British, active 1784-1827)A portrait miniature of Captain Meredith Charles Deane of the 24th Light Dragoons (1762-1815), wearing a blue frock coat, a white stock and a cravat, his hair powdered. Watercolour on ivory, gold frame with plaited hair surround and buckle detail, the reverse engraved, Meredith/ Charles Deane/ Captain 24th Light Dragoons/ Aet 1815, later brooch pin fitting. Oval, 44mm (1 3/4in) highFootnotes:Captain Deane travelled to India with his wife, Ann Deane (1770-1847) in 1799. The couple left behind their eldest son, Charles, so that he could be educated in England but took with them a younger child, John Bathurst Deane. Little is known of the first period of the Deanes' residence in India. However, in 1804 Ann returned to England to place John in school, then sailed back to India with Charles, by then aged 14. Ann rejoined Captain Deane at Calcutta, and the couple lived in India for a further ten years. Captain Deane was employed by the East India Company as a District Collector and Ann accompanied him on several long tours of the Company's recently acquired northern provinces in Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. These tours subsequently became the focus of Ann's published narrative, which details the family's travels across India between 1805-1811. Ann returned to England in 1814, possibly as a result of escalating tensions between the East India Company and the Maratha Confederacy, which culminated in the Third Anglo-Maratha War of 1817-18. Captain Deane remained behind and died in India in 1815.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y ФY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the UK, see clause 13.Ф This lot contains or is made of ivory and cannot be imported into the USA or any country within the EU.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
