The Siege or Battle for Vienna: A Mid to Late 18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture highly decorated, silvered and gilded. The wide and heavy guards and sticks opening to a full 180 degrees. The gorge is designed with three separate vignettes, all with gilded figures, some being cherubs, the tops of the vignettes seemingly having carved sun rays, paying homage to the French Sun King? The double paper leaf depicts a battle, mainly on horseback, some combatants using curved swords. Several have black faces, others more oriental, most wear turbans and appear to be laying siege to city walls, having set up a tented encampment outside. To the right, cannons are being prepared for further attack. The verso is less vibrant, showing a tall tent with a man with a black face shouting instructions to a small boy of similar race, who appears to be dealing with provisions. Guard length 26cm Research suggests that this might be a depiction of a battle at Kahlenberg Mountain near Vienna on 12 September 1683 after a two month siege of the city by the Ottoman Empire. This was the first time a military cooperation had taken place between the Commonwealth (the Hapsburg Monarchy, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) and the Holy Roman Empire, the command being given to King John Sobieski, and it is often seen as a turning point in history. The silvering is dull, most gilding is bright. Evidence of leaf restoration to verso.
Billotey: A Large Circa 1890's Pale Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture plain, the cream gauze leaf supported with bone ribs. Signed Billotey to the top right. The leaf is painted with a distant view of sky and clouds, in front of which four small and colourful garden birds, one with a red breast, perch on twigs. The remainer of the leaf consists of a sheath of pastel coloured flowers and wheat. The verso is plain. Guard length 27cm, overall length 35cm. Together with a card fan box covered in silk; and A 20th Century Bone or Ivorine Fan, mounted with a cream gauze single layer leaf, painted with pink roses and blue ribbons in vertical and quite meandering rows, embellished with leaves in green sequins and gold sequin flowers, the upper edge of the leaf decorated with two rows of gold sequins. The gorge is complimentary with rows of gold and green painted pattern matching the decoration on the guards. Basic gold metal loop embellished with a green stone. The verso is plain. Guard length 21cm (2)Fan 1- Some slight marking to the leaf, some of which is glue residue, and evidence that at least one split has been restored behind the right guard. Fan 2 - The upper guard plus the first two gauze folds are completely detached. Most folds are split to some greater or lesser extent.
Moses and the Israelites in the Promised Land: An Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, the sticks plain other than a mother-of-pearl tip to each guard and mother-of-pearl thumb guards. The painted vellum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, depicts the escape of the Israelites from Egypt, possessions scattered to the left of Moses, in yellow, the coastline behind. The verso has simple painted wavy lines up the leaf supports. Guard length 26.5cmGood strong colours but leaf rubbed, and a little creased at the sides with some repairs to the folds. The first stick in to the left is stuck to the guard.
A 19th Century Chinese Fan Sheath or Hanging Case, Qing Dynasty, one side of cream silk with embroidery in blue silk thread and embellished with gold and silver metallic couched threads, depicting flowers and a vase, the other side in teal silk embroidered in pink silk thread with bronze metallic couched threads, again a vase and flowers. A yellow braid strap decorated with pink stones is attached at the top. Remnants of a pale blue silk lining. Length 30cmThe cream silk is grubby. One side of the case has been undone for the first 10cm, from where it can be seen that the major part of the blue silk lining has been removed.
A Mid-19th Century Chinese Carved Tortoiseshell Mandarin Fan, Qing Dynasty, the double paper leaf depicting several different scenes of social gatherings, the figures with ivory faces, their robes of applied silk. The fourteen inner sticks are densely carved on both sides with mainly flowers and foliage and some buildings, the guards being more deeply carved and with similar designs. The gold metal loop is finished with three tassels of different colour silk. The rivet has a diamanté to each side. Guard length 27cm. Together with an elaborate fan box of the period, lacquered in an unusual light coffee shade, decorated to the sides and ends with simple black foliage and flowers, the outside of the lid finely painted with two vignettes each showing three figures: in the first a figure holds a fan box, in the second a different figure holds an open fan. Inside, the fittings are missing the lid interior, lined in salmon silk, and edged with striped braid, has three appliqués, two of ladies and one of a man, each bearing a gilt, their faces of applied painted ivory, their silk robes very elaborateGenerally sound with very slight rubbing to some folds. When closed the fan can be seen to be very slightly warped. The box interior need refitting and the catch is not secure.
Jacob and Leban: A Circa 1740 European Fan, the double paper leaf painted in gouache with gold highlights to the border, the sticks plain with the addition of mother-of-pearl thumb guards, the gorge sticks with wide shoulders. A rare depiction of Jacob, accompanied by his wives Leah and Rachel, admonishing Leban for having first tricked him into marrying not Rachel but Leah. The scene includes a very bemused goat, his bi-colour coat being relevant to the story. The verso is very simple with a top border, and wavy gold lines. Guard length 27cmGenerally in good order, one split to the leaf near to left guard noted.
The Sacrifice of Jephthah's Daughter: A Mid-18th Century Plain Tortoiseshell Fan, the double vellum leaf depicting the return home of Jephthah, a judge in Israel, who had been away to fight the Ammonites. Before leaving, he had prayed to God for success, rashly promising to offer up as a sacrifice the first person who met him at home on his return. Sadly, this was his beloved only daughter. The verso is decorated with three vignettes of buildings, a house, a church and a windmill, overlaid with a tromp l'oeil pink and cream ribbon. Guard length 29cmRubbing generally to the leaf and to the folds. Some soiling to the verso.
Shipwreck on the High Seas: A Pierced and Carved 18th Century Ivory Fan, with upper sections of the guards carved, and the gorge both carved and pierced. The flowers are particularly delicately carved, and above the central painted vignette, inside which are meandering blue ribbons similar to those which border the scenes on the leaf. The vellum leaf mounted à l'anglaise with a black ground embellished with lilac and white flowers, to the left shows a shepherd, his sheepdog and sheep, with a couple carrying a basket. To the centre, a dramatic scene of high seas and a shipwreck on rocks, with further sailing ships in the distance. To the right, a dog snuffling in the undergrowth. The verso is painted with a simple and elegant branch adorned with blue and pink and pale yellow blossoms, some of which may be orchids. Guard length 26.5cmThe leaf is very rubbed, as is the gorge painting. Several repairs to the leaf folds. The first gorge stick in to the right appears to be a replacement. Sticks very dirty.
The Toy Seller: An Unusual 18th Century Fan, with a tortoiseshell monture, the upper guards heavily carved and pierced with a sunflower, this section both silvered and lightly gilded on the flower, the gorge sticks ornately gilded and silvered, some being inlaid foil, with touches of green to the centre. The first three sticks in from the guards are not pierced, but are carved so as to form a deep V, each of these sticks with its own pattern variation. The central sticks are pierced so as to form a lattice up which meandering flowers and leaves climb. The leaf, of silk, shows a mother and her small son choosing new toys from a merchant, a miniature donkey and carriage at their feet, a horse and turbaned rider being considered, more toys within a basket at their feet. Two further vignettes, all three being bordered with gold sequins, sewn into place, show a lady playing a cup and ball game and a young man pulling the vanes on a windmill with a string. The verso is simply decorated with flowers in pale pink and blue, each spray inside the reverse of the front vignettes. Guard length 25cmSome rubbing to the leaf folds, some loss to the foil and gilding.
