Thirty three and a half hours later, Lindbergh landed at Le Bourget after completing the first ever non-stop solo transatlantic flight. Lindberghs aspirations for aviation were vast and in 1930 he reached out to John Heinmüller, President of the International Aviation Federation and director of Longines-Wittnauer. This relationship cemented Longines part in Aviation history and within 5 months the first prototype of 'The Longines Hour Angle' was tested and ultimately put into production. Designed by Lindbergh himself in partnership with Longines, the watch allowed for accurate determination of longitude during long-distance flights. As a result, pilots and navigators were able to find their geographic location quickly, efficiently and with great accuracy. The current lot is in great condition and bears the features that define this model. A large case, oversized knurled crown and adjustable central disc. Longines have confirmed that within their handwritten registers this watch is recorded as a 'Lindbergh type' wristwatch in stainless steel bearing the reference 3210. It is fitted with a Longines manually wound mechanical movement, calibre 18.69N and was invoiced on 22 November 1937 to the company Wirth, which was at that time their agent for Switzerland. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

It quickly gained favour among the Pan-Am executives and the business jet-set community as a whole.Offered continuously since its introduction with relatively little modification it is perhaps, along with the Submariner, the most classic Rolex 'tool' watch made. The reference 1675 began production 80 years ago in 1960. This was the first GMT Master reference to feature protective crown guards as well as the smaller triangular tip on the second hour hand. The current example features a Pepsi bezel that over time has aged to an amazing vibrant pink thus earning the nickname of 'Fuchsia'. The varying colours that vintage Rolexs turn demonstrates an interesting point in Rolex history where they were experimenting with different suppliers and materials to create the most desirable finishes. The different aging nature of varying materials now means 60 years later vintage bezels and dials are constantly providing fascination. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Regarded for its beautiful hues, the watch's design is inspired by 1967 America's Cup winner, 'The Intrepid' which had several Heuer chronographs on board. To commemorate the win, Jack Heuer commissioned the 7754 (based off of the 7753), which today remains one of the brand's rarest and most coveted watches. The most notable characteristic of the watch is the colouring, which is directly taken from 'The Intrepid': a deep metallic blue dial, mint green subsidiary seconds and the iconic tri-colour green, mint green, and orange 15 minute count-down register. The distinctive mint green comes from the deck of 'The Intrepid' after an MIT study deemed it the colour least likely to produce distracting reflections. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ΩΩ VAT on imported items at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Heuer. A very rare stainless steel automatic calendar chronograph bracelet watchModel: Carrera ChronomaticReference: 1153Date: Circa 1969Movement: 17-jewel Cal.11 automatic, signed on the bridge HeuerDial: Charcoal/blue sunburst, polished luminous tipped baton hour markers with white inserts, white outer 1/5th second divisions, raised outer tachymetre, silvered subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for 30 minute and 12 hour recording, polished pointed baton hands with luminous and black inserts, red centre chronograph handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back, crown at 9, twin fluted chronograph pushers at 2 and 4, Number indistinctStrap/Bracelet: Brushed and polished Gay Frères link, HLC end linksBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding clasp stamped 3 69Signed: Case, dial & movementSize: 38mmFootnotes:In 1965 Jack Heuer met with his competitors Willy Breitling and Hans Kocher of Büren and the Dubois-Depraz company, and convinced them to participate in a joint venture to develop an automatic chronograph. It was the start of an ambitious partnership and was soon joined by the American watch producer Hamilton, which had established a major stake in the Büren watch company. The prototypes were promising and the newly named Calibre 11 'Chronomatic' movement; a symbiosis between 'chronograph' and 'automatic' exceeded all expectations. This Chronomatic is a very rare example of the first usage of the Calibre 11. One of the hallmarks of the early iteration is the instantaneous calendar which was later modified. Originally it used so much power it could stop the watch when it was wound down. Another is the almost industrial finish to some of the levers and shaky engraving on the signature plate. There are less than 10 that have appeared on the market and it was possible it was produced mainly for the press as almost a prototype. As the dials are prone to flaking, the originality of the lume plots and condition overall makes this example which is in good condition very rare indeed. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ΩΩ VAT on imported items at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Cartier. The case is composed of 3 parts allowing the central body to be inverted in order to present a smooth solid case back thus protecting the more vulnerable glass side. Due to its similar first introduction date, the Tank Basculante is often compared with the 1931 Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Although sharing a similar goal and developed by the same company Spécialités Horlogers, the Basculante differs from the Reverso in several key ways. In particular the method used to invert the case on the Basculante is via a swinging frame that pulls the central body out towards you before flipping and replacing. In comparison the Reverso is set within a track that allows you to slide the body out to the side before turning over. The original production of the Basculante was quite limited before being briefly revived in the 1990s. The current example hails from the late 90s and was presented in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Cartier. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Whilst the 5575 was limited to 1300 pieces, the 7175 was produced on an even smaller scale of just 450 pieces and was available exclusively in rose gold. It is this rose gold combined with diamonds and a centred moon phase that makes this model such an exquisite timepiece to behold exuding pure class.Housed within this reference was the new Cal.240 HU LU explicitly developed to achieve a smooth synthesis between the world's 24 time zones and the lunar cycle. To acknowledge Patek Philippe's heritage, Central European Time is represented by the city of Geneva.Patek Philippe first employed the World Time complication in its wristwatches during the 1930s, when the complication was first invented by Swiss watchmaker, Louis Cottier (1894-1966). Cottier's classic World Time wristwatch depicted 24-time zones simultaneously, with the local time zone of the wearer controlled through a pusher in the case whilst automatically correcting the position of the 24 hour dial. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ΩΩ VAT on imported items at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

One of the most sought after of these masterpieces derives from their unrivalled, powerful lineage of minute repeating perpetual calendars - the Reference 5074. First introduced in 2001, the Ref:5074 was initially produced in just yellow gold before being followed by rose gold editions in 2005 and platinum in 2009. The current example, never before offered at auction and being sold by the original owner, derives from the rose gold epoch and dates to 2009. Only 100 examples were made in rose gold and they were available with either a silvered dial or, as with the current lot, a striking black dial. It is believed that less than 10 have since come back to the market demonstrating explicably how coveted this model is by those already in possession of one.Housed within the 5074 is the celebrated calibre R 27 Q – at just a mere 6.9mm high, 8mm across and comprising of 467 parts this calibre features a minute repeater with Cathedral gongs, perpetual calendar, moon phase, 24 hour indication and a minimum of 38 hour power reserve. This calibre was first introduced in the famed Ref:3974 in 1989 in celebration of Patek Philippes 150th Anniversary. At the time of its inception this was the most complicated calibre to be fitted to a wristwatch ever launched by the manufacture. One of the elements that makes this calibre so special is the 'Cathedral' gong repeating mechanism, consisting of a high-tone and a low-tone gong. The gongs of a 'Cathedral' repeater are longer than traditional gongs which allows for a richer and more compelling sound. To achieve this, highly skilled watchmakers must navigate fitting gongs that encircle the movement almost twice without touching other components within the case. Although Patek Philippe have produced legendary minute repeaters over the years, the difficulty involved in making Cathedral gongs means that only the most exceptional models are fitted with them and thus form the crowning glory for the manufacture. Alongside the 5074, Cathedral gongs can only be found in highly exclusive models such as the Ref: 3974, 5178, 5374 and Sky Moon 6002. The current lot offers a rare opportunity to own and enjoy one of the most luxurious and sought-after complications ever to leave the Patek Philippe workshops. With each minute repeater being personally assessed by Thierry Stern before leaving the manufacture, the quality of these timepieces is irrefutable. George came out of it a game changer, elder statesman, mentor to many influential watch producers and a national treasure.Considered as one of the greatest watchmakers of the 20th Century, George struggled for more than two decades to persuade many of the Swiss watch brands that his revolutionary Co-Axial escapement – designed to run unaffected by the deterioration of its lubricant – was possibly the greatest advance in horology since Thomas Mudge invented the lever escapement over 250 years ago. Eventually, he was proved correct and Omega adopted the Co-Axial design introducing it into select models at the Basel Fair in 1999. To celebrate this monumental deal, George, along with his apprentice Roger Smith, set about creating the Millennium wristwatch series. The Millennium was created over a period of 3 years with delivery made in 1999 ahead of the new millennium. This was the first collaboration between George and Roger and each watch was painstakingly hand-finished by the two of them in what is considered as an 'English style'. With just 48 examples made in yellow gold it is difficult to overestimate just how important these watches are especially when considering the current example was the 9th watch created by George in the series. To take horology forward by a greater step than anyone else has done since Thomas Mudge in 1755 is quite simply phenomenal. At a time when the stock of independent makers seems to be sky rocketing, the current lot offers a fantastic opportunity to own a significant part of contemporary watchmaking history. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The 'Sea-Dweller 2000' was one of the first production watches to employ a gas-escape valve on the band of the case, which allows the interior of a watch to decompress and avoids damage. The one way valve automatically releases built up gas from inside the case when the diver rises from the deep sea environment without which the watch would be in danger of popping the seals. Interestingly, the plexi glass covering the dial did not feature the usual cyclops magnifying the date window as it adds a pressure point which would cause a weakness. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

In recent years this model in all its different incarnations has built up an almost mythical reputation. With its iconic design and the photos on Paul Newman's wrist the exotic Daytona dial truly represents the dream of watch collecting. In 1969 Rolex replaced the first Oyster Cosmograph 6240 with both the reference 6263 and 6265. The current lot is a great example of this having been owned by a professional deep sea saturation diver who wore it around the world in places such as Russia, India, Africa and Bermuda. Used extensively as a working watch in the North Sea oilfields, this watch along with its owner would dive to depths of up to 200 metres and survived periods of up to a month at a time confined in pressurised saturation diving chambers. These chambers were filled will heliox gas which would enable the men to launch and dive in a diving bell to the sea floor. One of the design features that made the Sea Dweller such a vital piece of equipment was how it handled during decompression post dive. Decompression can take up to 5 days and to avoid the watch from getting damaged Rolex designed the Sea Dweller 2000 to be the first production watch to employ a gas-escape valve on the band of the case. This one way valve automatically releases built up gas from inside the case when the diver rises from the deep sea environment without which the watch would be in danger of popping the seals. Interestingly, the plexi glass covering the dial did not feature the usual cyclops magnifying the date window as it adds a pressure point which would cause a weakness. The 'Double-Red' Sea-Dweller reference 1665 appeared in the Rolex catalogue from 1972 until 1975. The watch was originally developed to accompany speleologists on their cave exploration expeditions and as such was designed with extreme durability in mind. Due to its limited commercial success and short production period, the reference 1655 is today one of the more sought after Vintage Rolex models. The model features a fixed bezel with 24 hour display and a special 24 hour hand that can be set to distinguish day from night hours. Keith Vaughan (British, 1912-1977)Two Bathers bears studio stamp (lower right)pencil24.8 x 19 cm. (9 3/4 x 7 1/2 in.)Executed c. 1965Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist's Estate, from whom acquired by the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.The subject of 'bathers' appears more frequently than any other in Vaughan's work. Throughout his life he depicted boys on beaches or bathing in rivers and estuaries. He first showed an interest in the subject in the early 1930s when he took a series of photographs in the male enclosure of Hampstead Ponds and continued to paint, draw and photograph swimmers in his own garden in Essex until the end of his life. In the present work two young men dangle their legs over the side of an embankment in a moment of relaxation. They are at one with nature and appear to be in some sort of woodland or rocky setting. Although it does not directly relate to any known oil paintings, the composition is typical of Vaughan's concern for integrating the human form within a landscape setting and he produced several variations on this theme over the course of his career. We are grateful to Gerard Hastings for preparing this catalogue entry. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Keith Vaughan (British, 1912-1977)Assembly of Figures bears partial studio stamp (lower left)pencil22.2 x 25 cm. (8 3/4 x 9 3/4 in.) Executed c. 1959Footnotes:ProvenancePeter AdamThe Artist's Estate, from whom acquired by the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.ExhibitedLondon, Menier Gallery, Visions and Recollections: Keith Vaughan and Prunella Clough, 15 April-2 May 2014, cat.no.106, p.105 (ill.)Over the course of twenty-five years Vaughan produced nine major paintings to which he applied the title Assembly of Figures. The first dates from 1952 and the last was completed in 1976. There are many related gouache and pencil studies of which this is one. It came from the collection of Peter Adam, one of Vaughan's closest friends and was found in its present condition in the artist's studio after his death. The Assemblies share certain pictorial characteristics. For example, the protagonists are invariably male and are presented to the viewer nude or semi-nude. This makes identification of the individual, his social class or profession, impossible to ascertain. The settings are beachscapes or semi-abstracted landscape environments, whereby figure and location are melded together into a coherent composition – despite few specific clues to indicate where they are. Nor can we interpret the precise activities the figures engage in or for what purpose their coming together has taken place. Vaughan does not help matters by distilling facial features and disguising genitalia; he considered both these anatomical details to be 'the attention grabbers' and thought they exerted a considerable pull on the eye of the viewer. Gestures are generally of an anti-dramatic type and psychological expressions are virtually non-existent. The lack of narrative clarity is intentionally restricted to engender pictorial ambiguity and generate a quality of enigmatic uncertainty. We are grateful to Gerard Hastings for preparing this catalogue entry. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lord Frederick Leighton (British, 1830-1896)A bronze figure of 'The Sluggard', the nude male stretching, on canted square base, inscribed THE SLUGGARD, and signed Fred Leighton, and with inscribed foundry marks, FOUNDED BY J. W. SINGER & SONS, FROME SOMERSET, 52cm high (20in high).Footnotes:Although perhaps better known as a fashionable Royal Academy painter of the late 19th century, Leighton took up sculpture in the 1870's and today is regarded as the father of New Sculpture in England. Leighton's Sluggard, also known as 'Athlete Awakening from Sleeping', was first executed in 1882. Giuseppe Valona, the Italian model who posed for 'An Athlete Struggling with a Python', was again used for the Sluggard. Edgcumbe Staley described the moment when: 'Giuseppe Valona, the model, a man of fine proportions, weary one day of posing in the studio, threw himself back, stretched out his arms and gave a great yawn. Leighton saw the whole performance and fixed it roughly in clay straight off.'A more refined life-size plaster was later exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1886 and was awarded a medal of honour when it was shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle three years later. A bronze cast of this plaster, acquired by Henry Tate in 1896, is now in the Tate Gallery. The Sluggard has obvious parallels with Rodin's 'Age of Bronze', exhibited in 1884 and it was perhaps this work which encouraged Leighton to revive his earlier model. The work later became one of the most popular Victorian statuettes when reduced-scale bronze editions were made by Arthur Leslie Collie and cast by the Singer Foundry.LiteratureS. Sir William Reid Dick (British, 1878-1961)A bronze figure of 'The Catapult' or 'Slingshot Boy', the nude figure twisting to the right and aiming his catapult, the naturalistic base signed and dated W. Reid Dick 1911, mounted on veined green marble rectangular plinth base, the figure 63cm. high (24 13/16in high), 67cm high (26 3/8in high) overall.Footnotes:ProvenanceChristie's, Furniture, Works of Art & Carpets, 13th September 2005, lot 263Reid Dick first exhibited his bronze of 'The Catapult' or 'The Slingshot' as it was alternatively known at the Royal Academy in 1911. Measuring 60cm high, this large scale version was first cast by the Italian founder Giovanni Galizia at the Parlanti foundry and is now in the Bradford City Art Gallery, Cartwright Hall. Later reductions in two sizes, 60cm and a smaller and more common 33cm high were cast by Galizia in his own foundry although the model was subsequently cast after the first world war by other foundries. The Victorian Web states that examples of the large size cast measuring 60cm high are rare, citing the Bradford example as being the only known recorded example of this size held in a British public collection. The present bronze measuring 63cm high is however evidently rarer still, as it corresponds in height with an apparently unique bronze figure of the same subject sold in these rooms as lot 297, 4 November 2015, Fine English Furniture, Sculpture & Works of Art, sale 22305, which had direct provenance to the sculptor and family descendants. This figure was marked with the foundry stamp for the Morris Singer Foundry, dating it to no earlier than 1927 when the foundry firms of Morris and Singer merged. In addition the surface of this figure, much like the present lot, had a distinctive Verdigris green tone which apparently was Reid Dick's preferred surface finish for patination when he oversaw the casting and finishing process. As such, it is possible that the present lot, although unmarked, may also date from the same period. LiteratureD. Wardleworth, William Reid Dick, Sculptor, Ashgate, p.160H. [he] plays the piano and does tricks (magician tricks, that is)'. In addition, the periodical included Tom of Finland's extraordinary run of drawings, usually in sets of six per theme. They functioned as 'teen photo stories' which Mizer published and then sold as photographic copies to his ever-growing readership.Together, Tom and Mizer codified a new form of male erotica, exploding the charged sexuality under the surface of American life. In Tom's extravagantly romantic images - a potent mix of exaggerated physicality and emotional truth - bikers handle attempted thieves a little too roughly, a strapping TV repairman is cornered against the set by its owner, and the sailors taking a novice to a tattoo parlour are all high-tensile teeth and smiles. It was precisely Tom who developed a new set of subcultural codes (leatherman, cowboy, biker, cop), turning the workwear and uniforms of blue-collar America into a set of cross-cultural fantasy signals that have become globally recognised - permeating the imagery of Robert Mapplethorpe, the Village People, and Queen. On the back cover of the December 1974 issue of Physique Pictorial was this rare and fine finished drawing from Tom's golden age, part of Mizer's 'Set S', where a standing nude makes a possessive/protective gesture to his crouching friend, both regarding the onlooker, direct but enigmatic. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Jean Genet (French, 1910-1986)Querelle de Brest, first edition, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Genet filling the dedication leaf and with a shorter inscription on half-title, ONE OF 40 COPIES ON PAPIER VÉLIN reserved for 'les amis de Querelle', signed and numbered by Genet, from an overall edition of 525, 29 erotic illustrations by Jean Cocteau, black half calf by Patrick Loutrel, original wrappers bound in, slipcase, 4to, [Paris, Paul Morihien, 1947]Footnotes:'CE LIVRE EST COMPOSÉ AVEC DES CENTAINES DE GARÇONS QUI SONT MES MAÎTRES': Genet's astonishing, candid dedication to the brothers Hervé and Gérard Mille, within his celebrated Cocteau-illustrated novel. 'This book,' he writes, 'is written with the help of the hundreds of boys who are my masters. Each encounter with them is a celebration for me... They are its origin' ('Chaque rencontre avec eux m'est une fête... Eux, c'est l'origine').Written in 1946, the novel Querelle de Brest presents the depraved actions of the attractive bisexual sailor, thief, traitor, drug dealer, and murderer Georges (Jo) Querelle in the port city of Brest. This first edition was clandestinely published by Paul Morihien in 525 copies of which this is one of forty copies signed and numbered by Genet 'Pour les amis de Querelle'. With its explicit homoerotic illustrations by Cocteau, the book was prosecuted for affront to public decency in 1954, but later cleared on procedural grounds (Indiana University, 'Banned Books' web site).Hervé Mille co-founded Paris Match and became editorial director of Marie-Claire, and lived with his brother Gérard, a decorator, in rue de Varennes. There, they entertained the beau monde - Coco Chanel, Colette, Serge Lifar, André Malraux, Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, and indeed Cocteau and Genet. In his long inscription, Genet thanks them for their hospitality and friendship; he is clearly touched that two such affluent gentlemen should have welcomed into their home a man who had been in and out of prison for theft, vagabondage, and lewd acts. He acknowledges their offer to buy a copy of his book, and expresses his delight that it has ended up in such good hands. He ends, 'je vous aime beaucoup'.While presentation copies of Genet's works are not uncommon, such a dedication - revelling in the sexual genesis of Querelle - is almost unparalleled. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Deutscher Krieg (Austro-Prussian War) -- Photographer: JohannTheodor Meier. Bahnhof Eger. June 19, 1866. Albumen print with rounded corners. 14 x 30 cm. Mounted to original board (traces of use, strong vertical crease in left side, soiled), with gilt title and date printed below the image on the mount. The location and date "Bahnhof Eger am 19. Juni 1866" is printed in gilt letters below the image on the mount. On this day Prussia declared war against Austria and its federal troops. The direct cause was the mobilization, by the Bundestag in Frankfurt, under the leadership of Austria. The railroad station at Eger was obviously one of the most important railroad junctions for troop transports towards Königgrätz and other war locations. In this image one can see over 30 locomotives and a large number of wagons on 6 or 7 rails ready for departure. The importance of railroads was quickly recognized by Prussia after the American Civil War of 1861/65, where for the first time the crucial role of railroads in the rapid transport of troops had been clearly demonstrated. Such an early German photograph that so keenly demonstrates the importance of the railroad during the war is extremely rare. – Some scuff marks and surface soiling, stronger verticle crease in left side, otherwise in good condition.
