CHARLES DICKENS POCKET WATCH, gifted from Bentleys Miscellany: a William IV gilt metal open faced key wind pocket watch, the fusee movement signed 'William Tyas London, No. 12067, 45mm diameter engine turned dial, the case engraved to reverse 'Dearest Boz editor Bentleys Miscellany Dec.1836', the initials CD to left and right of centre. A highly emotive and particularly early piece of Dickens memorabilia, given to him at the close of the first year of the periodical's existence under his editorship. Concluding the serialisation of The Pickwick Papers the following year, Dickens went on to resign from his position as editor after falling out with Bentley in 1839.Lots 61-63 are from a deceased estate originating in the Portsmouth area. It seems likely that they originally belonged to Dickens' youngest daughter.Condition report: The watch winds and ticks, very minor rust to some parts, movement is clean, general wear to gilding, some wear to case commensurate with age. We do not have a certificate of authenticity with this lot.

A HALBERD, A PARTIZAN AND A SPONTOON 18th century, the first with tapering double-edged blade with circular piercing on both sides, with pierced crescentic axe-blade with hooked projections opposite and below (one hook with missing terminal); the second with broad tapering triangular blade pierced and engraved with an elaborate martial trophy surmounted by a classical figure brandishing a sword, with two upcurved lugs at the base; and the third with leaf-shaped blade with stubby lugs; all on later wooden staffs of circular section (and rust patinated) and approx. 300cm long (3)
A SWISS STAINED GLASS PANEL with a soldier on horseback beside a lady holding a flagon above a coat of arms and inscription: “Ludwick Zandler von Wangen in Constadten ampt der zeit fl: Wurttembergischer Adjutant, iber die gaullen, und Susanna Zandler sein ehlich hausfrauw, 1634” translates as “Ludwick Zandler of Wangen in the district of Constance, temporarily Sergeant of Horse in the service of the Prince of Wurttemberg, and Susanna Zandler his lawful wedded wife, 1634”, 37.5cm x 24cm wide; and another Swiss stained glass panel with soldiers wearing feathered hats, a scene of David and Goliath with initials, the base with an inscription: “Hr: Vallachi Ulluki, frankalp und Hr: Nichlus Mani, landisve, und Hr: Hanns Buller, landt, seckell meister im uderenschechall, 1674” (presumably triple portrait of three old men who served together in the 30 Years War some time before), 34cm x 26cm (2)Note: According to family records, the first panel was re-leaded in 2003 and the second in 1979.
