The magnificent porcelain dish Meissen, decorated with a picturesque landscape Schwanenschlösschen bei Zwickau, is an outstanding example of the art of the masters of the Meissen firm of the first half of the 19th century. The decorative design of the dish is distinguished by an expressive relief ornament with curved rocaille edges and four bouquets of decorated fruits, which adds elegance and sophistication to the composition. In the center of the dish is an elegant polychrome painting on porcelain, depicting a swan pond in Zwickau, against the background of which an ancient castle can be seen. The composition combines the subtlety of execution and the harmony of color shades, creating the impression of a picturesque panorama. Exquisite silver teapot-samovar, St. Petersburg, early 20th centuryMasters of the First Silver ArtelAn exquisite teapot-samovar, made in the workshops of the First Silver Artel in St. Petersburg at the beginning of the 20th century, is an exceptional example of Russian classicism. This samovar, which was an invariable attribute of table setting, stands out with its complex relief decoration and three-dimensional pattern, reflecting the highest skill of jewelers of that time. The body of the samovar, made in a hemispherical shape, is installed on a rectangular stand resting on legs made in the form of lion`s paws. These elements emphasize the monumentality of the item and its connection with the traditions of European silver art, especially popular in Russia in the first half of the 19th century. The central part is decorated with a relief palmette and spiral decor, giving the samovar a special decorative richness. The low tap, designed in the form of a lion`s head, emphasizes the richness and symbolism of the product. The shoulder of the samovar, smoothly turning into a hinged lid, is also decorated with a geometric pattern, and its top is a stylized pine cone - a popular motif in the decorative arts of that era. Curved side handles, decorated with sculptural decor in the form of lion heads, enhance the overall monumentality of the composition. The samovar embodies the experiments of the masters of the First Silver Artel with forms and motifs inspired by the famous products of English masters of the 19th century, in particular, the works of the great Paul Storr (London, 1771-1844). This item embodies the fusion of Russian and European styles, which was characteristic of the jewelry traditions of the workshop of Julius Rappoport, and later of the First Silver Artel. Their craftsmen created a wide range of items: from small desk items to vases, candelabra and even large formal decorative elements for dining tables, known as surtout de table.Hallmarks: Hallmark of the Moscow District Assay Office with the initials of the manager Ivan Sergeevich Lebedkin (appointed in 1899); Hallmark with an image of a woman`s head in a kokoshnik, facing left, with the initials IL and the hallmark 84, dating from the period 1899-1908; Hallmark of the First Silver Artel (ICA), active in the early 20th century in St. Petersburg.Dimensions: Height 33 cm. The large salon vase was created according to the model of Ernst August Leuteritz between 1860 and 1863 and is an outstanding example of Meissen porcelain of the late 19th century. The vase is made of two parts and is distinguished by its refined shape, reminiscent of a baluster with a fluted round foot and high curled handles. The elegant relief decor includes acanthus leaves, ornamental friezes and a sculpted pearl strip, giving the product a majestic and noble appearance. The main background of the vase is painted in a rich royal cobalt color, which effectively contrasts with the polychrome overglaze painting. On both sides of the body of the vase are depicted detailed bouquets of roses and chrysanthemums, executed with a high degree of skill. The rich gold trim and fine edging emphasise the sophistication and luxury of this work of art. The top of the vase bears an underglaze blue mark and a first-class mark, confirming the highest quality of production at the Meissen manufactory. The mark dates back to the period 1860-1924, which attests to the significant collectible value of this piece. References: Bergmann, Meissener Figuren, supplementary volume, p. 56, fig. 2100. This exquisite figurine of Salammbô, also known as Oriental Dancer, created in the first quarter of the 20th century, is an excellent example of Art Deco plastic art. The sculpture shows a graceful girl frozen in the movement of a dance, with expressive and dynamic lines characteristic of this artistic movement. The figure is made of gilded bronze, which is skillfully combined with smooth ivory. Ivory is used to depict naked arms, legs, stomach and chest, creating a harmonious contrast between the materials and emphasizing the sophistication and elegance of the forms. The girl is depicted in a dynamic pose, inspired by the author of the historical novel Salammbô by the French writer Gustave Flaubert. The sculptor depicted Salammbo in bronze, a priestess of the goddess Tanit, radiating the expression and grace typical of the Art Deco style. Each element is carefully worked out, conveying the liveliness and energy of movement. Graceful lines and elegant forms emphasize the aesthetic value of this sculpture. On the bronze part of the figurine is the signature FATORI, which confirms the authorship and high quality of execution. The sculpture is accompanied by a CITES certificate, certifying the legality of the use of ivory, which adds additional value and significance to this work of art. Dimensions: Height 340 mm, Width 280 mm. Chryselephantine technique. Materials: bronze, ivory. Weight: 2.5 kgThis sculpture not only illustrates the sculptor`s skill in working with bronze and ivory, but is also a striking representative of Art Deco - a style that emphasizes decorativeness and functionality. The superb landscape River Bank in Winter by Boris Bessonov transports the viewer to the enchanted world of winter nature, filled with an atmosphere of cold and silence. Nature here is frozen in the moment, shrouded in a blanket of soft snow, which shimmers with pink reflections of the setting sun. The light of this warm evening sun heralds the end of winter, adding a special emotional depth to the painting. The main focus of the work is the river, calmly flowing among the snow-covered banks. Its surface, like a mirror, reflects the slender firs that rise above the water like majestic giants, filled with power and tranquility. The snow covering their branches creates a feeling of a winter dream of nature, in which every movement seems to be slowed down by the frosty air. The sky, painted in soft blue, pink and grey tones, adds a sense of approaching spring, promising the imminent awakening of nature. This work by Bessonov enchants with its realism and masterful use of light and colour. The artist managed to convey not only the winter beauty, but also the subtle transition from cold to warm, from winter to spring. The painting evokes feelings of peace and tranquility, recalling the cyclical nature of time and the eternal harmony of nature. Boris Bessonov (1862–1934) Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 63 cm x 80 cm. First half of the 20th century. Provenance: Rayner MacConnell, Bond Street, London Width: 100cm, Height: 85cm, Depth: 10cm, Weight: 10kg, Condition: Good, Material: Canvas, oil, ID: ID-ANTQ-11254
George III Sterling Silver Jug by John Deacon, London, 1772This exquisite jug, made by John Deacon in London in 1772, is a superb example of British silversmithing from the time of George III. The interior of the jug is gilded, highlighting its luxury and status. The engraved and embossed rural scene on the outside depicts a farmer with a plough and a cow grazing in a field, adding a rural feel to the composition. Birds in flight decorate the spout of the jug, while the unengraved cartouche on the front is ideal for a dedicatory inscription, adding an aristocratic touch. The finial is in the shape of a cow, a popular symbol in decorative motifs of the period. The massive handle is complemented by an openwork element for easy opening, which gives the product additional elegance. Dimensions of the jug: height 24.5 cm, length 21 cm. Weight: 1042 grams. Hallmarks: master John Deacon, London, 1772, additional late hallmark HH Henry Holland, a famous master of the mid-19th century, active in London in 1840-59. Historical background: John Deacon was an outstanding English jeweler and silversmith of the 18th century, who left a significant mark on the history of British craft. His career began on January 19, 1759, when he was apprenticed to John Moore, a famous master of his time. The training lasted seven years, and on July 2, 1766, Deacon received the title of master, which allowed him to begin independent work. The first official record of his work as an independent craftsman is on 11 September 1776, when he registered his hallmark at 23 Greenhills Rents, St John Street. However, there is evidence to suggest that he began working earlier, as references to his activities can be found in a lost masters’ book before 1773. According to historian Heale, John Deacon is also mentioned as a goldsmith working in Addle Street in 1771. In 1773, John Deacon’s name appears in a parliamentary report as a minter at 1 Love Lane, Wood Street. This period of his career is characterized by high activity in the production of silver and jewelry, testifying to his skill and professionalism. Deacon’s work was respected and in demand among customers, which confirms his status in the craft environment of that time. Despite his creative success, John Deacon faced financial difficulties. In April 1775 he was registered as bankrupt in Wood Street, which probably led to the end of his professional career. However, his contribution to the development of English silversmithing remains an important chapter in the history of 18th century jewellery. Henry Holland (1842 – 1850) Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater was founded in 1838 by Henry Holland (the elder). In the same year he registered his first hallmark at the London Goldsmiths` Hall and began a partnership with Thomas Frercks, trading as Holland & Frercks in Clerkenwell. However, their partnership ended in 1841 when Frercks retired. Henry Holland continued the business on his own and around 1850 his eldest son, Henry Holland (the younger), joined him. In 1851 Henry junior was granted his freedom by the Goldsmiths` Company and the firm was renamed Henry Holland & Son. In 1866 the company expanded its scope by purchasing Elizabeth Eaton & Son and moving to Aldersgate Street. In the 1880s the business was taken over by John Aldwinckle and James Slater and the firm was renamed Holland, Son & Slater. In 1883 Henry Holland (junior) left the company and it became known as Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater. Over time the partnership was joined by James Slater`s sons and in 1922 the company was acquired by Francis Higgins & Son Ltd. Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater continued in business until 1932. The painting, executed in the manner of Marinus van Reymerswaele, depicts two tax collectors with grotesque faces, sitting at a table in clothes typical of the 15th century. The character closest to the viewer, dressed in a black turban and pince-nez, with a concentrated expression on his face, writes text in a book reminding tax evaders of their obligations before the law. The second collector, in a dark blue turban and red caftan, looking meaningfully at the viewer, points his hand to this text, clutching an empty coin purse in the other hand, emphasizing the need to replenish the treasury. The collectors` clothes stand out against the background of the interior, indicating the status and class of the characters . The faces depicted by the author emphasize the satirical meaning of the picture, hinting at human greed and stinginess. In this plot, the master created a grandiose satirical image of predatory financial capitalism, which arose in the light of the economic and cultural boom in Antwerp in the 16th century, which actually turned the once small Flemish city into the financial center of the world. According to experts, the recognizable scene of two misers was borrowed and recreated in many variations by the artist Marinus van Reimerswaele from the great Flemish author Quentin Massys. This plot was one of the most popular and recognizable in Europe during the period of the 16th - 17th centuries. Similar works adorned royal collections as well as collections of aristocrats and nobility of the time. Nowadays, Marinus van Reimerswaele`s works on the theme of Tax Collectors are part of the exhibition of museums around the world, including the Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in London and the Prado Museum in Madrid. The recognizable plot is located in Windsor Castle, in the king’s personal chambers, as well as in the Royal Collection of Liechtenstein. One of the paintings of Tax Collector attributed to Marinus van Reimerswaal is included in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, acquired from the heirs of the first Prime Minister of England Sir Robert Walpole at the end of the 18th century by the Russian Empress Catherine II. WW2 atom bomb pilot Brig Paul Tibbets signed rare photo. Photo Size 3 by 6 ½ Personally Signed by Brigadier General Paul W Tibbets. Paul Tibbets would go down in history as the first pilot to drop the Atomic Bomb - the target, Hiroshima. He left medical school in 1937 and joined the Army Air Corp. at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio. Here he could fly at government expense. While stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. , and being a shotgun enthusiast, he was assigned to the base Skeet Shooting range. This is where he met George Patton. They became good friends and spent many hours on the shooting range. He also served as Patton's pilot during tank range manoeuvres. He has some great stories to tell about him. Paul flew B10 and B12 aircraft in low flying exercises. Returning from one of these missions in December 1941, he heard on his aircraft radio that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbour. America was at war. He was then transferred to the 29th Bomb Group to fly the new B17. He temporarily flew the B18 on antisub duty off the U. S. east coast. He was made Commander of the 40th Squadron, 97th Bombardment Group (Heavy) at MacDill Air Base, Tampa, FL. He trained his crew in the B17 and flew many hours, day and night. Most of this time, he slept in his clothes. From Bangor, Maine, he flew across the North Atlantic to England. This was the first group of American-manned, tactical aircraft to reach the United Kingdom in WWII. Paul was made the Executive Officer of the 97th Bombardment Group (Heavy). On August 17, 1942, he flew the first American plane on a daylight bombing raid over German occupied Europe. The mission was to bomb a rail yard in France. This mission was flown in the aircraft named, "Butcher Shop", not his regular plane. His future missions were flown in the "Red Gremlin". Paul had a great attachment to this aircraft and called it, "the Good Gremlin". He flew many missions over German occupied territory. On one of these missions he was wounded but was able to return to his base. Before the invasion of North Africa he flew General Mark Clark on a secret mission to Gibraltar. It was from Gibraltar that General Mark Clark directed the invasion of North Africa, "Operation Torch". He later flew General Eisenhower (sitting on a 2 x 4) to North Africa on an inspection tour. Paul flew many missions in North Africa during 1942-43. He was then moved to Algiers and continued to fly missions. General Doolittle sent Paul back to the states to help develop a new bomber, the B29. After extensive training with the B29, he was sent to Colorado Springs where he was selected to lead a top secret mission. He was 29 years old at the time. He would command the 509th Composite Group. From the Island of Tinian, Paul Tibbets would go down in history as the first pilot to drop the Atomic Bomb - the target, Hiroshima. Good condition. 1912 Titanic survivor Eva Hart signed rare 1992 Jugoslavia 80th ann FDC. Eva was seven years old when she and her parents boarded Titanic as second-class passengers on April 10, 1912. They had been booked on the SS Philadelphia, but a coal strike at Southampton that spring kept her from sailing and many of her passengers were transferred to Titanic. Eva's mother allegedly felt uneasy about Titanic and feared that some catastrophe would happen; the hubris of calling a ship unsinkable was, in her mind, flying in the face of God. With such fear, Eva's mother slept only during the day and stayed awake in their cabin at night fully dressed. Eva was sleeping when Titanic struck an iceberg at 11:40 pm on April 14. Her mother was awake at the time and felt "a slight bump". She immediately asked her husband to investigate the disturbance and he reluctantly left the cabin. Upon his return, he alerted her and Eva to the collision and, after wrapping Eva in a blanket, he carried her to the boat deck. Eva's father placed his wife and daughter in Lifeboat No. 14 and told her to "be a good girl and hold Mummy's hand". It was the last thing he ever said to her and the last time she ever saw him; he perished in the sinking and his body, if recovered, was never identified. Eva and her mother were rescued the following morning by the rescue ship RMS Carpathia. Soon after arriving in New York City on April 18, Eva and her mother returned to England, because her mother never wanted to set sail for New York in the first place. Eva was plagued with nightmares and upon the death of her mother in 1928, when Hart was 23, she confronted her fears head-on by booking a ticket on a passenger ship heading to Singapore, upon which she locked herself in her cabin for four straight days until the nightmares went away. At birth he was fourth in line to the throne; he was ninth in line at the time of his death. A Cambridge and Stanford graduate, he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office serving in Lagos and Tokyo, before returning to take over royal duties. He led an active life, flying Piper aircraft, [1] trekking through the Sahara, and hot air ballooning. He was the most recent descendant of George III to be diagnosed with porphyria, probably hereditary, which is conjectured to be the illness that caused George III's mental breakdown. Prince William died in 1972, aged 30, in an air crash while piloting his plane in a competition. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
