WWI Archive Glass Slides of Geography & Terrain Norway c1925. A collection belonging to Dougall H Bird, Soldier & Explorer comprising of a set of approximately 100 Glass slides in their original boxes, each annotated and initialled by Bird showing Norwegian Terrain and Genre circa 1925, Personal effects include postcards to sweetheart, academic qualifications, certificates, photo-postcards of Military service and family life, references, ledgers national registration documents dated 1915 and other original documents all contained in a suitcase belonging to Bird. After the first world war Dougall Bird carried out an extensive exploration of Norway visiting Fjords, lakes and villages in the middle twenties. Bird through his knowledge of the geography and terrain of Norway supported British Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the early part of the second world war following the German invasion of Norway (April 1940) in supporting sabotage operations by British and Norwegianforces to disrupt German operations*.*British forces launched a serious of operations in collaboration with Norwegian resistance codenamed Grouse, Freshman and Gunnerside in knocking out the Hydro-electric plant at Vemork to thwart the Nazi plan to obtain ‘heavy water’ requirement in the early stages for manufacturing a Hydrogen bomb.After death archive passed down through the family by descent.

Liverpool printed creamware signal mug, circa 1793-1800, cylinder form with printed and hand coloured decoration, inscribed 'An East View of Liverpool Lighthouse and Signals on Bidfton Hill (sic)', height 12cmProvenance: Earle D. Vandekar, Knightsbridge.NB: The signal house on Bidston Hill was first mentioned in 1763. A telegraph service was set up to give early notice of the arrival of ships in the port of Liverpool. As a result over 100 signalling poles were erected, mostly belonging to the merchants of Liverpool. In 1771 the first Bidston lighthouse was erected and the government established a chain of stations using semaphore signals between Bidston and Holyhead in order to forewarn of the approach of any enemy. The flag no. 40 on this particular mug is inscribed 'Enemies' and this raised atop the Bidston lighthouse. (Please note condition does not form part of the catalogue description. A rectangular box with VR initials and royal cypher in gilt containing two illuminated licences on vellum: the first dated 1836 authorising George Mason of Necton to use the name Blomefield in lieu of Mason and to bear and use the arms of Blomefield, the licence with the wax seals in brass cases of Sir Ralph Bigland, Garter Knight and William Woods, Knight Clarenceaux. Americana Interest: two lettters from Rt.Rev Robert Smith (1732- 1801), first Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina. The first dated 1758 from Charlestown to Dr. Mason describes "the town in which I live as large as Yarmouth, well fortified, spacious streets, good size buildings inhabited by wealthy merchants. The letter refers to the country as "pleasant though flat with a great quantity of game and stock of deer." He refers to his stipend of £200pa as "better than strarving in England. Letter goes on to note "one thing which I find disagreeable and great confinement is excessive caution in regard to my behaviour: no assembly, no card playing and no shooting but shoot I do and shoot I will. Letter goes on suggest that a reply can be delivered to the Carolina Coffee House, Birching Lane, London.The second letter dated 1761 addressed to "Most Noble Captain" informs the recipient of the arrival of Lieut Charles Brown " who arrived from Jersey in December 1760, sent to humble the Indians, who have committed most unheard of cruelty upon our settlers." he goes on " Poor Devil, I know not how this fightiing scheme will agree with him. He marches 60 miles a wild wilderness presents itself ever after - Pine Trees his only meditation and fear of being scalped his olny dread - an enemy destitute of all humanity continually alarming and contributing to make it disagreeable. He was born July 4, 1864, in Beckenham, Kent, England, the son of Caroline Fynes Clinton and James Wilson Holme. He was educated at Sherborne, going to Corpus Christi where he took a first in law, 1887. He qualified as a solicitor, and in 1891 was called to the bar but is most notable as an explorer, in Brazil and Labrador. He was President of the Law Society 1939-1940 and knighted in 1941. In 1892 he married Evelyn Frances d'Egville, but they had no children and he died Dec. 23, 1957.
