Lot 2056

Two Mid-19th Century Bone Fans, the first with broad sticks allowing for a colourful painting in the gorge depicting a courting couple by a riverbank, the gentleman down on one knee and holding his lady's hand. The double paper leaf, lithographed and hand coloured, shows a similar scene with winged cherubs carrying flowers destined for the centre of the gentleman's attention, who is unaware of Cupid on a cloud behind her. The verso repeats the romantic theme, this time with country couples sharing a picnic. Contained in a pink velvet fan box with a Duvelleroy label within the lid. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm. Together with A Bone Fan, with deeper gorge, the recto, lithographed, showing couples and ladies outdoors, amongst wild Spring flowers, a stone well, a windmill and stone buildings in the background. The verso shows a gathering of younger maidens, with one young man vying for their attention. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cm (2) First fan: Purchased at Christie's SK on 23rd October 1979 for £35.00 Second fan: Purchased at Christie's SK on 5th December 1978 for £20.00The first fan has a loss and a split to the first stick in from the left. The bone is very grainy. The bone is discoloured on the verso, and there is a small hole in the leaf directly through the middle of the gentleman. The second fan has a metal plate repair to the upper guard near the rivet, another with similar repair and between those another stick is broken and not repaired. The box is longer than either fan.

Lot 2081

A Late Victorian Fabric Fan, mounted on black wooden sticks, with unusual gold and ice blue decoration, the cream silk leaf printed with a design of fixed and folding fans, a small central depiction of buildings (possibly a Parisian skyline) surrounded by palms, and other exotic foliage. The verso is a plain eau de nil silk satin. Guard length 12.75 inches or 32.5cm. Together with a late 19th century fan of black wood, the monture pierced, the black gauze leaf bordered with black machine lace. Guard length 13.5 inches or 34.5cm (2) First fan: Purchased at Bonhams on 10th March 1979, one of two fans, for £30.00 Second fan: A present received at Christmas 1979 from Miss Kennedy's friendly neighbours.The second fan lacks the lower guard and the excess lace at that side has been folded back and secured to prevent it from damage.

A 19th Century Fan, the wooden monture painted brightly in gold, the double leaf of a vibrant blue silk satin, a fragment of 18th century bobbin lace applied to the top as a border, telescopic action, the verso plain. Guard length 7 inches or 18cm when closed. Together with A Late 19th/Early 20th Century Bone Fan, mounted with a double leaf, strong blue silk satin to the recto overlaid with white bobbin lace, the harebell shaped flowers in tape lace, the borders and reserves in ''cucumber'' lace. With a darker blue silk to the verso, the size 9.75 inches or 25cm; and Four Items Of Antique Lace, to include a Normandy lace circular table centre, a bobbin runner, a Maltese handkerchief and a machine lace shawl collar edged with tapelaceThe first fan is bright and clean, the verso with light foxing. The bone fan is a little grubby and the upper guard has been repaired. The Normandy lace centre is intact but very stained. The Maltese handkerchief is damaged.

A Circa 1830's to 40's Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, the twenty three inner sticks and one guard carved throughout with buildings, figures and stylised foliage. Contained in a well -fitting fan box covered with 18th century yellow/floral weave silk brocade. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cmThe first stick in from the right is missing part of a tip. The lower guard is absent and the stick next to it is stuck to the small part of the remainder. The fan box is most likely for another fan.

A 20th Century Chinese Fixed Fan of Lacquered Wood, the circular frame containing a cream silk panel delicately embroidered recto/verso with a basket a flowering rose tree within, a bird perched on the handle. Height 17.25 inches or 43.5 cm. Together with A 19th Century Mandarin Fan, the double paper leaf bordered in pink, mounted on wooden sticks, lacquered in black and decorated in gold, with a depiction of figures in a garden and two in a boat. The recto shows robed figures with applied ivory faces, the verso painted with flowers and foliage and a butterfly. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. (2) First fan: Purchased from an Antiques market in 1978.Fan 1 - Good. Traces of an old price label remain on the handle. Fan 2 - The monture is clean, and sound. The leaf has some rubbing, and slight splitting with previous repairs likely.

Lot 2003

A French Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the double leaf plain to the verso, mounted on carved, pierced and gilded sticks, the upper guards backed with pale pink mother-of-pearl, the recto shows a courting couple in 18th century dress, seated outdoors to play a card game, accompanied by a chaperone. The cartouche is bordered with gold sequins which further meander across the leaf, accompanied by further detail in metal thread and flowers, formed from coloured sequins. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27cm. Together with An 18th Century Ivory Fan, with similar monture, the double fabric leaf plain to the verso, the recto painted vertically in gold and colour, showing flaming torches, flowers and musical instruments, alternating with embroidery to the folds and simple sequin decoration. Contained in an 18th century tube covered in green mottled paper. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27 cm (3) First fan: Purchased on the 14th July 1979 from Mrs Pamela Hudson for £45.00 Second fan: Purchased at Christie's SK on 5th of December 1978 for £20.00Some restoration to the folds, some splitting to the recto held by the verso, and some wear to the folds. The tube is in good order. Some strains to the verso of the second fan.

Lot 2033

A First Quarter 19th Century Horn Brisé Fan, the twenty-one inner sticks and two guards all with pointed tips and pierced in horizontal bands in regular designs. Barrel rivet. Guard length 6.25 inches or 16cm. Together with A Second Fan, finely painted with a central cartouche depicting two ladies in loose flowing robes and holding musical instruments, a winged cherub at their knee. The reserves are painted with fruits and the tips and other panels are lightly incised. The verso is plain. Guard length 6.25 inches or 16cm (2)The horn fan is sound and clean. The second fan is slightly curved backwards, warping clear when folded.

Lot 2070

A 19th Century Bone Fan, carved and pierced and simply gilded, mounted with a double paper leaf depicting two 18th century ladies in a garden, and a gentleman in breeches and long waistcoat, proffering a small domed box to the lady at his side. The reserves are floral. The verso shows a pair of young boys, surrounded by elaborate gold scrolling. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. Together with Another Bone Fan, lightly carved and pierced, perhaps 1830's, the double paper leaf printed and hand coloured, the scene one of relaxation at the river bank, or a small island, two ladies and a gentleman settling to enjoy red fruits recently harvested. The verso is plain pale pink. Guard length 8.25 inches or 20.5cm; and A Third 19th Century Fan, a lithograph mounted on carved and pierced wood, Spanish, showing a day at the Bullfight, with the Toreadors arriving in procession in front of the crowds in the arena. The recto is printed with ''Salida de la Cuadrilla, Plaza de Toros de Valencia''. The verso shows couples relaxing with refreshments. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. The Cuadrilla is the Bullfighting Team.The first fan has wear/some slight loss to the verso paper. Fan 2 has a damaged central gorge stick with slight loss, and the third fan has some rubbing to the folds and a few splits to folds along the top border.

Lot 2087

An Early 20th Century Sequin Fan, the pale green silk leaf mounted on bone, the sequins in gold and silver and of differing shapes and sizes. Together with A Black Wooden Fan, the monture clouté, embellished with silver sequins embroidered onto black silk gauze, the motifs representing Iris, dragonflies and butterflies, A Further Bone Fan, mounted with cream gauze and embellished with silver sequins. Guard lengths 7.5 inches or 19cm; 10 inches or 25cm; and 8.25 inches or 21cm; and A Large and Airy Late 19th Century Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture gilded and silvered, the cream( or extremely pale green) gauze leaf painted with a spray of white bell flowers on deep green foliage, with entwined initials, including C M L and ?, the verso plain. Contained in a sturdy card fan box, the exterior lid decorated in gold with scrolling and a basket of flowers, the interior bearing the label for ''V. Marcot, Fan Manufacturer, 18 Newman Street, Oxford Street, London W. Guard length 14 inches or 35.5cm (4)The green silk has splits in places and nicks to the top of some folds. The upper guard has been repaired and the first stick in is stuck to it. The sequins are bright. Black fan, there are several broken ribs and one stick is loose, the sequins are starting to tarnish; some light foxing to the cream fan and the leaf needs to be re-secured to the monture. Two ribs have broken and been repaired. Last fan - The upper guard has been repaired. The lower guard is broken mid-way. The gauze is thin and indeed split on some of the folds, to the left.. Good colour.

Lot 2061

A Colourful Mid-19th Century Lithographed Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on carved, pierced and gilded bone, the recto with three separate scenes, two featuring figures in armour. To the right, a winged Angel and a lady (Athena) wearing a helmet, speak to a young lady holding her child. Centrally, a male figure in ruby red robes and gilded armour speaks to a similar lady, several children at their feet, a baby held in the arms of the Angel and another female, Hermes and perhaps Athena above. To the left, a Queen with 3 children and another lady. The verso shows a musical gathering to the centre, and two further vignettes with couples, and small scenes all featuring musical instruments and players, the details in gold, against a very deep blue ground. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with A Mid-9th Century Bone Fan, gilded and pierced, inset with tiny gold roundels, mounted with a double paper/lithographed leaf, the recto showing a King listening to music in the company of two ladies. The reserves are dark, and gilded. The recto by contrast, in pastel colours, shows a mountain landscape with pine trees and a large chalet, in front of which a boy plays with a dog. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cmThe first fan has a break to the upper guard at the shoulder, and to the first gorge stick in. All sections appear present but the leaf is torn at this point. Good colour. The second fan has a break to the upper section of the lower guard. The gilding is dull and there is loss to the gold roundels but those that remain are bright. The leaf has slight damage to two places on the bottom border.

Lot 2124

A 1920's Advertising Fan, of fontange form, advertising ''The Haymarket Kit Cat Club'' (London), showing elegant ladies in period dresses, long pearls and bobbed hairstyles, their partners in dinner suits, one with a monocle, in the foreground a couple partaking of chilled champagne, the gentleman smoking, the lady with a sleeping white cat on her lap. The recto is printed with a profile of the club's building, and again marked ''The Haymarket Kit Cat Club''. Simple wooden sticks, double paper leaf. Height at centre 9.75 inches or 25cm. Together with A Fontange Advertising Fan for The Metropole Brighton, the wooden sticks painted black and painted in pastels, the paper leaf showing scene including two women in kimonos with deep obis. The verso is plain. Height 8.75 inches or 22cm (2) First fan: Purchased on 13th May 1980, for £2. The vendor believes this was her Aunt's favourite London night club.First fan has good colour, slight rubbing to some folds, and a faint stain on the verso. The second fan is in good order.

Lot 2122

A Stroll in the Park: An Early 20th Century Pale Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, lightly silvered and gilded with classical designs, the leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, the recto showing gentlefolk of the early 19th century strolling in the grounds of a fine chateau, watching ducks on the water, relaxing on benches and greeting acquaintances. Centrally one beau sports a military uniform. The verso is plain. Signed Miroty (?). Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. Together with A Paper Advertising Fan by Duvelleroy, Paris, for the ''Restaurant de l'Hotel Regina Paris'', the central cartouche showing the sumptuous interior, with a side vignette to the left showing the view of the city with the Eiffel Tower and other monuments, taken from the hotel balcony, and a further vignette showing the hotel's exterior, taken from the Tuilleries' gardens. The verso is plain. Guard length 9 inches or 23cm (2)The leaf on the first fan is slightly rubbed on the folds and has one pinprick, an inch or so of the top gold border is fraying. The mother of pearl is light and airy and the gilding is good. Two small patches of repair to the leaf as seen from the verso. Both guards have broken and been well repaired. The paper fan has nicks and very small tears to some folds but the fan is strong.

Lot 2049

In Wonderland: A Wood Brisé Fan, circa 1880's, the light polished sticks drawn with the title ''In Wonderland'', and illustrated with six Tenniel characters from Alice in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, with text beneath. From the left, the Hare in costume, with trumpet and scroll, ''The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts, all on a summer day: The Knave of hearts he stole those tarts, and took them quite away!'', the Mad Hatter with the dormouse ''Twinkle twinkle little bat?, How I wonder what you're at, Up above the world you fly, Like a tea tray in the sky''. The two central drawings show ''The March Hare and the Mad hatter trying to put the Dormouse in the teapot'', and below ''The hatter left the Court without even waiting to put his shoes on''. To the right, the Hatter ''The wretched toe bled so that he shook both his shoes off'' and finally the Hare consults his pocket watch, no verse. The recto shows a spray of roses with a ladybird perched on the stem. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm Purchased at Christie's SK on 9th July 1985 for £130.00. Alice In Wonderland was first published in 1865. The illustrator is known to be Sir John Tenniel (1820 to 1914)Generally good and clean. The ribbon is sound but need to be re-spaced, and the wood next to the central ribbon slot is slightly damaged.

A Late 19th Century Wooden Brisé Fan, painted with a view of ''The Metropole Hotel, Brighton'' in a vignette bordered with flowers, fan consisting of fourteen inner sticks and two guards, Together with A 20th Century Paper Fan, advertising the ''London and North Eastern Railway, a simple leaf mounted on wooden sticks of the type made in China; Two Similar Fans, advertising ''The Great Eastern Hotel'' and ''The Trocadero restaurant''; A 19th Century Olive Wood Fan, with concealed cockade leaf of the type produced in Sorrento, marked ''Ricordo'' with a figure in local costume painted on the recto; A Paper Fan, mounted on wooden sticks, these being lightly painted in colour, the leaf showing a group of local musicians and dancers performing before a wealthy couple who observe from the stone balcony of their country property. The verso shows a piper playing for a strolling couple; and A Third Paper Fan, mounted on wooden sticks, the recto showing several finely dressed older children strolling in a park by a stone fountain, perhaps in the early days of courtship, not an adult in sight! The verso shows a group of younger children, playing with a skipping rope. Guard lengths: brisé 7.25 inches or 18.5cm; cockade 9.75 inches, 25cm (7)The first stick in from the left on the brisé is split but holding, the ribbon is sound, but unattached at the left, the wood is quite grubby.

Lot 2158

A Good Black Bobbin Lace Fan, both the monture and the ribs of tortoiseshell, the leaf designed with a large spray of flowers beneath scrolling. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm. Together with A Late 19th or Early 20th Century Cream Gauze Fan, the leaf mounted on cream painted wooden sticks, shaped and carved and pierced. The gauze leaf is painted with dainty daises and cornflowers and applied with seven horizontal bands of a deeper cream ribbon. When folded these ribbons protrude from the side of the fan, an unusual feature. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm (2) First fan: Purchased at the Chelsea Antique Market in London in 1978. Second fan: Purchased on 17th May 1979 for £40.00Good tortoiseshell.

Lot 2119

An Early 20th Century Bone Fan, lightly pierced in a regular design, and mounted with a double paper leaf. Central to the recto, two ladies in Regency costume, carrying fans, engage in conversation with a young man, whilst to each side further young ladies carrying folding fans take their rest and enjoy nature. The scenes are bordered with scrolling flowers which are highlighted with tiny green and bronze sequins. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Together with A Wooden Fan, painted white, à la Sultane, the stick tips in the gothic style, mounted with an under layer of mauve silk, bordered with machine lace in the style of Blonde; A Further Fan, of cream gauze mounted on bone, adorned with sequins surrounding three painted portraits of young ladies. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm; and A Large Late 19th Century Bone Fan, mounted with a double silk leaf, silk satin to the recto and painted with a bold spray of colourful roses and buds, the stems and foliage being continued down onto the gorge. Guard length 14.5 cm inches or 37cm (4)The first fan is in fairly good order. The silk on fan 2 is splitting in places and the lace is quite dry and has loss at the tips. The gauze in fan three is almost completely shot, but the images remain. Loss of sequins, and rubbing to the design on the monture. The final fan is in good order generally, with one slight slit to the backing silk, one light stain only to the verso, and very slight foxing, hard to see.

Guard length 8 inches or 20.5cm. together with A Telescopic Fan, with black wooden sticks mounted with a plain black silk leaf, guard length 7.25 inches or 18.5cm when closed down; A Further Large Black Machine Lace Fan, Late 19th Century, mounted on black wooden sticks, the lace appliqued to black gauze which is painted with birds, contained in a plain wooden fan box, guard length 13.5 inches or 34.5cm; and A Fourth Fan, Late 19th Century, the bone monture lightly carved and pierced, the cream gauze leaf appliqued with cream machine lace, and painted with wild flowers and leaves, five dragonflies in pink and pastel blue flying overhead, details being highlighted with embroidered tiny sequins in blue, silver and gold. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm (5)First fan: the machine lace is a little damaged at the top edge and the cream gauze backing requires attention. The telescopic fan is in good order. The gauze leaf on the black lace fan is very slightly split away from the upper guard, and the final fan is very pretty and has the remains of a sticky label at the tip of the upper guard.

Lot 2161

A Circa 1880's Bone Fan with Telescopic Action, the leaf of salmon pink satin applied with four motifs of cream Honiton bobbin lace with good leadwork fillings. The loop is finished with a salmon pink silk tassel with some metal thread embellishment. Extended length 9.75 inches or 25cm. Together with A Small Brussels Point De Gaze Fan, the lace mounted on carved, pierced, silvered and gilded white Mother-of-pearl sticks, the gorge with attractive detail. Guard length 10 inches or 25.5cm (2)The first fan, the telescopic action works freely. There is an odd stain to the satin, one or two brown mark on the lace, and the cream backing has glue marks on most folds. The needlelace fan leaf has deep brown rust marks, and a repair to the upper section of the upper guard.

Lot 2069

A 19th Century Jenny Lind or Palmette Fan, the shaped silk leaf panels mounted on carved and pierced, silvered and gilded white mother of pearl. Each panel is delicately painted with roses, lilacs and perennial flowers, and their foliage. The verso is plain. Overall length approx. 11 inches or 28cm. Together with A 1860's Wooden Fan, the monture carved and pierced and painted gold, featuring floral arrangements, the double cream silk leaf embroidered with small gold sequins, guard length 11 inches or 28cm; and A Third Fan, Circa 1860's, the wooden monture painted gold, the sticks carved and pierced, the double paper leaf showing villagers in their Sunday best relaxing by a river bank, the verso with more elegant ladies being amused by a gentleman with a tiny squirrel on a leash. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cm (3)The Jenny Lind is grubby and stained in places, some support to the tips has been added, seen from the verso. The upper guard is a replacement of a different shape, the first stick in from the right is not original. The gilding is somewhat tarnished. The lower guard has broken and been repaired twice in the upper section, one repair has not held. The gold has rubbed on the second monture, mainly near the rivet, the leaf has been re-secured to the upper guard with a few stiches, the leaf is discoloured to a light brown. The gold is rubbed on the third fan, the leaf folds have some splitting, at the top.

Lot 2034

Three Early 19th Century Horn Brisé Fans, the first with alternate gothic style sticks and rounded shapes with a cross at the tip. Trefoil head. The nineteen inner sticks and two guards, painted in gold, have a blank panel in the eight central sticks, surrounded by carving and piercing and clouté decoration. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm; A Second Horn Brisé Fan, carved and pierced in regular bands, the twenty inner sticks and two guards carved and pierced in straight and undulating bands. Barrel head. Guard length 6.25 inches or 16cm; and A Final Horn Brisé Fan, twenty-one inner sticks and two guards with pointed tips. Barrel head. Centrally seven of the sticks have a blank section which has been painted with flowersThe paint is rubbed almost away on the first fan, indeed traces suggest there was a painted design in the blank central panel. Some clouté decoration missing. Second fan has 21 inner sticks but one is secured to a guard as both it and the guard are broken. Third fan, the ribbon is incorrectly threaded. The flower painting is almost rubbed away, and one stick is split at the top.

Lot 2065

A Mid-19th Century Bone Fan, with brightly coloured lithographed double velum (?) leaf, the monture carved, pierced and gilded, the gorge elaborate in three shades of gold, a central floral spray surrounded by birds and butterflies. The recto shows an Alpine scene with a farmer dressed in a country smock, standing beside his loaded cart which is pulled by bullocks. Several ladies and another man and boy are present wearing regional costumes. Signed to the left F. Dandiyoor? The reserves are richly decorated in gold and at each side of the central cartouche feature portraits of elegantly dressed ladies. The verso is less decorative with a simple rural scene of distant hills and buildings with spires in a wooded area. The reserves have some gold detailing. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with A Fan, with lithographic double paper leaf married to an earlier ivory monture with figures carved on the guards. The gorge is painted with sweeping floral curves of blue, yellow and lilac flowers. The recto shows men and women in Baroque costume, the men with lace collars and breeches, seated at a table covered with sumptuous table carpet playing chess. Side vignettes depict courting couples in costume, and two magnificent castles. The verso, in cream with gold, shows a courting couple by a well. Numbers appear to be printed on each side, with ''2259'' to the left and ''J???'' to the right. Guard length10.75 inches or 27.5cm (2) First fan: Purchased at Phillips on March 6th 1986 for £50.00. Second fan: Purchased on March 23rd 1978 for £22.00First fan, slight loss to the gilding on the upper guard but otherwise in good condition, bright strong colour. Fan 2, nothing noted.

Lot 2094

An Early 20th Century Bone Fan, the monture carved and pierced, painted and silvered. The light pink chiffon leaf is backed with a light gauze, the recto being embroidered in vertical panels with shiny lattice-effect pink spangles, small gold sequins being added as a border. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. Together with A Bone Fan, mounted with a cream gauze leaf, embroidered with two bands of gold sequins and painted in a central band with pale pink roses and powder blue flowers amongst white lilac. The sequins are mainly in lattice-effect groupings with gold sequins as a border. Guard length 8 inches or 20.5cm. A Third Fan Bone Fan, is carved and pierced and painted in a dull gold, with roundels inset in regular designs. The leaf, of silk, is painted with delicate flowers, applied with strips of gold foil, and embroidered in vertical bands with tiny gold sequins. Guard length 7.5 inches or 1 cm. All contained within a glove box covered in Toile de Jouy showing harvest scenes and merriment (4)First fan, the backing need sticking down in places. Second fan, some splits to the folds where the flowers are painted. Third fan has a major split to the very central fold which is only just holding.

Lot 2114

A Late 19th Century Early 20th Century Light and Airy Cream Gauze Fan, the cream leaf edged and further embellished with white machine lace, flowers painted at random and highlighted with sequins. The pink mother of pearl monture is unadorned. The verso is plain. Together with a leather-effect covered fan box, the lid interior bearing the retailer's label for S. Levy, Eventailliste, 41 Avenue de L'Opera, Paris, Together with A Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the paper leaf backed in thin cream gauze, the finely painted recto depicting a couple in 18th century dress greeting each other whilst seemingly out for a stroll. The verso is plain. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Contained in a cream card fan box First fan in good order. Second fan, the upper guard has broken and a previous repair has not held. At this point and to the side the backing gauze is worn, and also further along the leaf. Otherwise the fan seems sound. This box is damaged at the end.
