[STRAUSS II JOHANN]: (1825-1899) Austrian Composer. TREFFZ HENRIETTA (1818-1878) Austrian Mezzo-Soprano, the first wife of Johann Strauss II. An interesting A.L.S., Jetty Strauss, three pages, 8vo, n.p., 21st May n.y., to a friend, in German. Strauss informs her correspondent that her husband will be in Paris on Wednesday to tie up matters at the Theatre de la Renaissance, although can not stay more than two days. She continues to state that her husband, above all, wishes to speak to her correspondent and instructs him to meet Strauss at the Hotel de Hongrie, remarking 'If the state of my health permits - I shall presently consult my doctor here - I shall accompany my husband. I just don't want to have to remain behind sick in a hotel somewhere en route. If the doctor can give me the assurance that, in taking good care of myself, I can get to Paris, then nothing will keep me here and I shall accompany him.' She further adds 'The idea of entrusting Lewy with these matters was a desperate measure - this is between ourselves - and Johann sees very well now that he needs to be present.' VG

The partially printed cheque is drawn on the account of the London & Provincial Opera Society Limited at Messrs. Coutts & Co. and is made payable to Furtwangler for the sum of £450.0.0. Signed by Furtwangler to the verso in bold black fountain pen ink alongside various official ink cancellations by the Dresdner Bank. The recto of the cheque also bears several bank cancellations. Together with a similar cheque made payable to Furtwangler for the sum of £150.0.0, dated 27th May 1938, endorsed by a representative of the conductor, and also including two further similar cheques, the first made payable to Norwegian Soprano Kirsten Flagstad for the sum of £200.0.0, dated 26th May 1937, signed by Flagstad in the form of an endorsement to the verso, and the second made payable to Danish Tenor Lauritz Melchior for the sum of £200.0.0, dated 28th May 1937, signed by Melchior in the form of an endorsement to the verso. GEORGE V: (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36. A.L.S., George, three pages, 8vo, Plymouth, n.d. (July 1891), to Windham, on the printed stationery of H.M.S. Thrush. The Prince thanks his correspondent for their note and remarks 'I am so glad the Revelstokes are there & especially John Baring who is a great friend of mine.' He continues 'All your arrangements will do first rate, I shall be ready for you….I shall be delighted to dine there & sleep the night & you must do the same & we will drive back together on Monday morning getting here about noon if that will suit you.' VG In May 1890 Prince George had taken command of the 1st Class gunboat H.M.S. Thrush, which he anchored at Plymouth on 26th July 1891. Less than a month later, on 24th August, he was promoted to Commander in the Royal Navy.

DI STEFANO & KOPA: DI STEFANO ALFREDO (1926- ) Argentinean Footballer & KOPA RAYMOND (1931- ) French Footballer. A good vintage signed 7 x 9.5 photograph by both Di Stefano and Kopa individually, the original press photograph depicting the two footballers standing together in full length poses, shaking hands. Di Stefano wears his Real Madrid strip and Kopa his Stade de Reims strip and the players were captured before the first European Cup final at the Parc des Princes in Paris on 13th June 1956. Signed by both with their names alone in blue fountain pen inks to the image, Kopa across a slightly darker area although legible. Some very slight, minor surface creasing, otherwise VG Di Stefano's Real Madrid beat Kopa's Stade de Reims 4-3 in the 1956 European Cup final. Di Stefano became the second winner of the Ballon d'Or in 1957 (again winning in 1959) and Kopa became the third winner of the Ballon d'Or in 1958.

Herbert Sutcliffe and Percy Holmes ‘Record Opening Stand’ 1932. Official scorecard for the Essex v Yorkshire match played at Leyton on the 15th-17th June 1932. Sutcliffe and Holmes set a Yorkshire record first wicket stand of 555, Sutcliffe scored 313 and Holmes 224no. Very nicely signed in ink by both Sutcliffe and Holmes. This is still the record opening stand for Yorkshire and is second in the overall record for the first wicket. Fully printed detail. Adhesive marks to borders of verso otherwise in very good condition. Rare in this signed form

*All Eleven of England v Australians 1884. Original silk scorecard for the match played on the 3rd-5th July 1884 at the St. John’s Ground, Fartown, Huddersfield. The scorecard, printed onto the silk in black print, by George Richards of Nottingham. Odd minor faults otherwise in very good condition. Rare The Australians managed to draw the game. The Eleven of England scoring 453 runs in their only innings, Australia being bowled out for 175 in their first innings and finishing on 124-7 in their second and that off 110 overs of bowling. For England Scotton made 134, Attewell 84, Grimshaw 77, Hirst 71. Scott top scored for the Australians with 50 in the 2nd innings. Attewell took ten wickets in the match
Middlesex v Essex, Lord’s, 27th-29th July 1911. Cricket ball, presented to Hearne, with silver metal band around ball with inscription ‘J.W. Hearne, ‘Hat Trick’, Middlesex v Essex, 6 wickets for 17 runs’. Good condition Hearne took the hat trick in the Essex first innings removing H.A. Carpenter, LBW, C.P. McGahey, bowled and K.L. Gibson LBW. He also took the wickets of P.A. Perrin, J.R. Freeman and B. Tremlin to give him innings figures of ten overs, four maidens, six wickets for 17 runs as Essex were bowled out for 78. Middlesex won the match by an innings and 211 runs
Derbyshire v Middlesex, Chesterfield, 27th-30th August 1935. Cricket ball, presented to Hearne, with hallmarked silver band around ball with inscription ‘Presented to J.W. Hearne. 9-61. Middlesex v Derbyshire. Chesterfield August 1st 1933’. Hallmarked, London 1933. Good condition Derbyshire were bowled out for 167 in their first innings with J.M. Sims taking 8-47 (his best personal bowling figures), in reply Middlesex scored 252 all out, with T.B. Mitchell taking 7-86. Derbyshire were then bowled out for 175 with J.W. Hearne taking the last nine wickets. His figures, a career best, were 24.4 overs, 8 maidens, 9 wickets for 61 runs. This left Middlesex needing 90 to win the match which they did for the loss of two wickets
‘What’s Cook-In?-Plenty-In Brisbane!’. M.C.C. tour of Australia 1946/47. Large and impressive original pen and ink caricature/ cartoon newspaper artwork, highlighted with colour, for ‘The Herald’, Australian newspaper by artist Samuel Wells. The cartoon depicts excellent images relating to the days tour match between Queensland and M.C.C. in Brisbane, November 1946, in the match G.G. Cook scored 169no and Colin McCool took 6-105 in the first two innings. The cartoon depicts various scenes where Cook’s are depicted, serving a meal, hanging onto a frightened English lions tail and the Australian selectors shown wearing cooks hats. Also depicts McCool and Tallon as the ‘Prickly Pair’, following Tallon stumping three batsman and taking a catch off McCool’s bowling. Players featured in the artwork include Hutton, Washbrook, Tallon, McCool, Gibb etc. The cartoon, signed by Wells, measures 22.5”x15.5”. Dated to label 25th November 1946. Excellent image. Some nicks and tears to borders otherwise in good condition
`The Saturday Match`. Hugh De Selincourt. Exquisite original watercolour artwork by artist James Thorpe produced for the dust wrapper of the cricket book `The Saturday Match`, a timeless tale of village cricket, written by De Selincourt and published in 1937 by Dent of London. The watercolour shows a village match scene of a batsman walking out to bat in blue and white hooped cap with fellow players, pavilion, scoreboard, club flag, tents, spectators and trees to borders. Titles in black ink to main image and spine paper. Signed by Thorpe to lower right hand corner with measurement and notes handwritten to outer plain borders. The watercolour measures 9.25"x10.5"and overall with borders 12"x16". A truly unique piece of artwork by Thorpe. G/VG Sold with a first edition 1937 copy of the `The Saturday Match` with original dustwrapper showing the published artwork. Hugh De Selincourt (1878-1951) was an English author and journalist who worked as a journalist, for the Star and the Observer until 1914, and is chiefly remembered today for his timeless tale of village cricket, `The Cricket Match` published in 1924, which stands alongside A. G. Macdonell`s `England, Their England` as one of the classic accounts of village cricket in English literature. The fictional village of Tillingfold was a recurring element in De Selincourt`s work, and was based on his own village of Storrington at the foot of the South Downs. ‘The Saturday Match’ (1937) and ‘Gauvinier Takes to Bowls’ (1948) were among de Selincourt`s final books before his death in 1951 James Henry Thorpe (1876-1949) was a founder member of the London Sketch Club, where he numbered fellow cricket enthusiast Frank Reynolds among his numerous circle. Besides working as an illustrator on several books, many cricket related, and magazines including `Punch` he also wrote on contemporary art, and published an instructional cricket book `A Cricket Bag` in 1929 and an autobiography `Happy Days` in 1933.
‘The Cricketers of Vanity Fair’. Excellent complete collection of sixty nine original colour lithographs of cricketers, the first forty seven as listed by John Arlott and the second twenty two as listed by J.W. Goldman, both in 1953 and published in Russell March’s book, ‘The Cricketers of Vanity Fair’. Some faults noted, minor staining to border of the images of Woods, Mitchell, Baldwin, Lucas, Bonnor, Hornby, Stoddart, Marsham and Ponsonby-Fane, wrinkling and light fading to Hobbs, age toning to Fry, small tear/damage to Spencer-Lyttleton, irregular trimming of borders to the Dartmouth lithograph, a few odd minor faults including wrinkling to the odd image otherwise in good condition. The lithograph of the rarer E.W. Dillon has very minor staining to lower border edge plus very minor wrinkling. Qty 70

Sold with a typewritten letter from Dempsey to a Mr Oxley of Ohio regarding finishing in the first ten in a qualifying round to win the ‘Jack Dempsey Cup’. The letter dated 18th August 1924. G

Two boxes containing binders of Jimmy Hill’s Football Weekly from the first issue October 27 1967, volumes 1 and 2 (complete), six bound volumes of Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly magazines from 1950s and early 1960s and a box file containing volumes 13 and 14 of Soccer Star magazine from 1965/1966 (incomplete).
