John Doyle, - known as HB (1797-1868), Pair of framed 19th C satirical political cartoons; "Great Cry & Little Wool" published 1845 and "Extraordinary Escape of an Old Rat" published 1844, Each bearing the 'HB' logo lower left John Doyle was probably the best known political cartoonist in Britain in the 19th Century. A First World War copper pavilion memorial wall plaque. With a simple styized border and list of twenty seven soldiers. School unknown but presented by the old boys on July 24th 1923 in memory of the old boys who fell in the great War. 60cm x 90cm. Condition Report. To be used as a guide only. Slightly bent. Heavily oxidised.
Attributed to Michael Dahl (1659-1743) A head and shoulders portrait Mr William Woodward Oil on canvas, 71.5cm by 61.5cm (oval) William Woodward was the only son of Edward Woodward and grandson of Sir Christopher Lewkenor, and heir to John Lewkenor, his second cousin. He took the name of Knight upon marrying his first cousin Elizabeth, and great niece of Sir Richard Knight, he died in 1721. Knight is a branch of the Austen family of whom the novelist writer Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a member of. Provenance: Chawton House in Hampshire. The picture bears the inventory number 15 The canvas has an old reline. The left hand side edge of the sitters lower body below the cravat and across towards his left hand arm has consistant re touching and in filling to old craquleure. These is more linear and isolated re touching/over painting within the folds of the drapery of his left hand side arm (the edge nearest to his body) there are other areas of re touching and over painting within the folds of his gown. There are more minor areas around his shoulder, beneath the cravat, an isolated patch to the parting of his hair running approximately quarter of the length down his face. There are some very minor and isolated patches to the background. There has been an old clean and re varnish, there is small sized craquelure across his entire face and through the cravat and other untouched areas of the drapery.
Dame Laura Knight RA, RWS, RE, RWA, PSWA, DBE, (1877-1970) Ballet backstage Signed, pencil, 34.5cm by 24cm Dame Laura Knight was a figure and landscape painter in oil and watercolour, draughtsman and etcher. She was born in Long Eaton in Derbyshire and later studied at Nottingham School of Art, where she met her husband Harold Knight. They both became members of the Staithes Group of artists on the North East Yorkshire coast. From 1908 - 18 they lived in Cornwall and in 1903 Laura exhibited her first work at the Royal Academy. Dame Laura Knight was particularly fond of accessing the backstage world of the ballet and circus where she could witness the characters preparing for the performance they were about to give. Her dedicated visits to the ballet began in 1911, from the time of the ballet Russes in London, and continued up until the Bolshoi Tour in 1956. Her interest in the circus began after the World War I, circa 1920, with the Swallow Circus in Islington, where Walter Sickert is also known to have visited and drawn inspiration. In 1927 she met Bertram Mills and travelled with Mill`s outfit between 1927-1929. In 1936 Knight became elected to the RA and her autobiography Oil Paint and Grease Paint was published in 1936. During World War II she worked for the War Artist`s Advisory Committee and then drew the war crimes trials at Nuremberg. Knight exhibited widely across the UK and beyond and major institutions such as the Imperial War Museum and Tate Gallery hold her work Retrospective exhibitions were held at the Upper Galleries in 1969 & Nottingham Castle Museum in 1970. It is known that she made several works for the proprietor of the newly opened Blackpool Ice Drome in 1944, and it is possible that the above work dates from this period *PLEASE NOTE: Droit de Suite Royalty Charges (or ARR) apply to this lot In good overall colour and condition. A Robert ``Mouseman`` Thompson Oak Cheese Board, with carved mouse signature on the board, 37cm Cheese boards were first produced in the 1930`s. Early examples were produced with the mouse carved at right angles to the handle and positioned on the board itself. In the 1960`s the mouse began to appear carved on the handle. Scratches/knife marks on the board. Damage to the ridge of the mouse`s back - possibly from knife. 111114
